Ex Mirum Trans Mare: A Fiery Arrival

A massive flaming ship crashes into the docks, causing chaos. None of those on board speak Arvani, and most of them seem to be suffering from some kind of sickness. Who are they? Where did they come from? What dangers or treasures will come from within the ship?

Ahmar just keeps his silent seat at the edge of the dock, looking down in to the water

Arcadia noticing Rysen and Thea here and knowing they will certainly tattle on her being here and without her guards, she sinks back into the shadows a little.

Cambria perks up when she spies Raymesin approaching, and her guards part in order to let the tall man approach her side. She confers something lowly with him.

Rysen arrives at the waterfront arrayed in armor, his eyes scanning for Rukhnis. He notices the gathering group before he notices her, and makes his way over out of curiosity to see what might be taking place.

Mikani arrives with Rysen. She has the hood of her armor pulled up tight to battle the cold. Mikani smiles at Rukhnis. She speaks to the woman in a forign language with her usual calm and warm voice. Her eyes move around the group taking them all in.

Mikani says in Eurusi, "Hello Rukhnis. Think spring will come soon?"

A beaver comes waddling through the snow, holding a toy ship in it's paws as it tries to get away from...something. "Benny! Bring Lord Evander's ship back here! I don't think it will make it in the water." Acantha states as she starts to head past the warehouse door after the beaver. Yes, the Noble woman is skittering after a beaver. It's not the weirdest sight in Arx. It won't be the last!

Arcadia suddenly feeling reckless and a little cranky, flings a pebble at Rysen's helmet.

Rukhnis's eyes narrow a little as she spots Rysen, which occurs nearly as soon as he sets foot in the vicinity. It's hard to say what her expression is for -- it might be the simple fact of his having appeared close to the docks, of all places, and kitted out in full armour, of all things. She gives a small shake of her head, then turns her attention to Mikani as the countess comes up to her and speaks.

Large crowds are the norm here, it being a center of commerce and all, positioned so near the docks. Juniper's distraction leaves her briefly skimming those milling nearby before she turns back to the fishmonger. The bag strung over her shoulder is shrugged higher, the basket resecured against her hip. "Where were we? Right, cod! Fresh caught this morning, I'm sure, but that's half again the price Tavvin charges, dock-side," and then they're off. The bartering's intensity is in contrast to the warm curl of her smile, and the gleam in the eyes of /both/ women as they engage in battle.

Rukhnis says in Eurusi, "Soon or late, it will come." She frowns slightly, adding, "I will miss the snow, a bit."

Thea is too busy focusing on her task at hand to notice Arcadia. There's too many people here and she has other things to do.

Ian looks up in passing when he hears someone yell something about his cousin, but he's got important supplier badgering to do. Eyes on the prize. That prize being getting provisions together to get out of this insane city for a while. It's a powerful motivation to keep Ian focused.

Hearing Eurusi, Rysen turns to see Mikani and Rukhnis speaking. He starts to make his way towards his retainer, before being pelted by Arcadia. Rysen spins around instantly with a touch of Northlands bloodlust in his eyes, before he sees the notorious Arcadia Leary, and breaks into a smile. "Good to see you, Ca... Lady Arcadia," he says, trying to sound angry with her. Noticing Ian and Thea nearby, Rysen bows and says, "Greetings to you, Lord Ian, Lady Thea."

When nobody responds to his general plea, Elisha dabs the beads of sweat from his forehead with a rag, wipes his hand on his skirt and starts to wander closer to any silk he notices, though he keep his head lowered so at not to cause alarm. "Alms for the poor?" He extends a hand hopefully. "A few coins for the needy? All gathered here today. Think of charity. Alms for the poor ..."

Raymesin steps through Cambria's guards in order to talk to her; he glances over towards some of the activity, then shrugs and makes some sort of reply.

Irisa finally seems to find the person she is looking for, a man of 30-35 years with some old battle scars. He looks up at her for a moment, meeting her eyes, while she looks down at him, the man huddled under a thin cloak. For the briefest moment it may look like she might say something awful to him, but she ends up smiling and squatting beside him. His cloak opens, reluctantly, and he shows her a bottle of cheap liquor while they whisper. Whatever they are discussing, it looks to be a serious matter, and being discussed in something other than Arvani.

Mikani frowns as she watches Elisha, "I'll pay you ... if you can help me." She calls out the the man.

Salvador catches sight of Arcadia as she grows bold and flings pebbles, pausing as he nears and adjusting the folio under his artificial arm a little more. "Lady Arcadia, what brings you down to this neighborhood this afternoon? I thought the nobility avoided the lower boroughs as if it were plagued."

"Alright." Still within the warehouse, possibly visible through a window or an open door, but focused on what he's doing at present, Ian passes the papers back to the person he's been talking with. "This looks like what she wanted. Get those sent off to Zoey for her approval, and then we'll have a look at the stock."

Merek makes his way to the docks where the flagship is parked, while he shifts his cloak about him, hood up, while he looks around a bit. He is making his way to check on things, while he takes a drink from his flask also.

Calaudrin continues his slow patrol of the port, maneuvering through the crowd. He doesn't stop to investigate the begging man or much else really. Eventually, he waves off his guards so that they can go mingle through the people congregated. He stops to open a slim metal case from inside his jacket, pulling a cigarillo free and lighting it up with a flint.

Benny stops once they get to a snowpile and the animal plants the ship there. Meanwhile, Acantha is distracted by Elisha's words and the woman takes a few coins from the pouch on her hip and hands it over to him. "Here." she states quietly. Then she's back after her companion, "Please don't bury the ship, Benny." she sighs.

The afternoon is briskly chilly, the wind whipping in from the mouth of the river, a hard wind carried across the water from the Ocean. It starts as a smudge of smoke on the Eastern horizon, a pillar of smoke rising in a column. Easily missed at first, but given the swiftness of the wind, the source of the smoke comes into sight from around the lip of the coast. A massive caravel, sails fully catching the wind is blowing rapidly into the harbor, heading for the Docks. The source of the smoke? The entire bow of the ship is currently burning.

The scent of wood smoke is carried on the wind, while on the deck slow moving figures are attempting to combat the flames at the expense of you know, steering the ship.

Thea hears Rysen and bows her head,"Lord Rysen,"hearing another name she lifts her eyebrow and turns. Thea nods to Arcadia as well,"Arcadia."

Arcadia shifts her gaze between Salvador and Rysen realizing she's been caught doing something she shouldn't be doing. "Hi Ry-I mean Lord Rysen." She shoots him a sugary smile to that cranky gaze. Before giving a wave to Salvador too. She almost tells him but cringes at Thea's harsh-ish tone.

Ahmar smells the smoke but is too enthralled with the little gold pin he seems to be debating throwing in the water to look up and even care to notice a massive burning ship.

Rukhnis flicks another glance around at the others in the area, particularly those who decidedly aren't commoners -- she appears to be as surprised and possibly skeptical about their presence as Salvador sounds. But she seems to quickly dismiss their presence along with that of everyone else as her eye catches sight of that smudge of smoke drifting towards the dock, and then, just as swiftly, of the ship it's coming from. She stifles a soft exclamation of horror and alarm.

Fishmonger and Juniper finally reach an accord, and a few small coins are exchanged in return for the fish, wrapped in wax paper. It joins whatever other bundles hide in her market basket, with a tip given through dimpled grin. "Same time tomorrow, Jassi? Gods bless," she bids adieu. On turning, the smell of smoke is caught and causes some hesitation-- fire, in the Lower ward? It would be a nightmare, but her puzzlement grows as she turns about and discovers the source to be the bay. "...Lagoma's mercy..."

Elisha slouches toward Mikani when he hears her. Halfway there, though, Acantha offers him coins, and he makes them vanish into his longshirt before turning to thank her. Except when he catches sight of her face, he flushes instead of speaking. He nods a few times, swallows, then continues toward Mikani. "I'll help you if I can, sister," he murmurs.

Rysen glances over his shoulder at Mikani, and flashes a grin. Turning back to Arcadia, Rysen says, "Careful, or House Leary's Minister of War will hear about this and issue the sternest of punishments, no doubt." Noticing Benny first, Rysen glances over and smiles to see Acantha, before his expression shifts to awe. "What in the Abyss is going on there?" he says, gesturing to the burning ship, and rushing toward the side of Rukhnis.

Cambria nods to Raymesin, but whatever else she might have been about to say is forgotten as her attention is captured by the rapidly approaching flaming ship. She nudges her companion, mouth opening, then promptly closing.

Merek looks to the distance a moment, when he sees the ship coming, and he takes a moment to think on it, he then calls to others, "Back from the waters and front of the banks, everyone move slow please," he exclaims, seems he will focus on herding people away.

guiding people away

The messenger that the man Ian has been talking with sends out comes RIGHT back in, breathless and wide eyed, reporting on what's outside. Ian follows him to the door and has a look out, then looks to the supplier. "You have buckets in stock? If not, half barrels will do. Kennex will cover the cost." His tone of voice is as calm as it was before, but there's an understated ring of certainty, the hallmark of someone who's comfortable with commands and the giving thereof.

Mikani smiles warmly at Elisha. Handing him a pouch she murmurs to Elisha. The burning smell gets her attention. "Rysen ... get your full plate ass off the docks ... it's gonna ram us." She looks around. "Get people off the docks."

You know who keeps smoking? Calaudrin. He squints at the incoming ship and frowns sharply at it, walking closer to where the point of impact is probably going to be. "Well, fuck." He tosses his cigarillo onto the ground and crushes it with his feet. He whistles to one of the men he brought with him, "Get more guards down here. This is going to be a damn mess." He jogs to the ships that are nearby and swings his arms, "Get off or get out of the way!" he calls to them. "Come on, move." There's shooing gestures to anyone lingering.

Merek checked command + leadership at difficulty 25, rolling 33 higher.

Irisa is busy in her discussion with the man. It seems rather terse, but is not a shakedown. The man, rather than looking scared, seems to be sitting up straighter and speaking to her more directly. A few pointed questions back and forth and she smiles. The look of a wolf with a packmate. She claps him on the shoulder and nods. "Aye. Leave the bottle and everything else but what you need to walk a little ways." A man that doesn't look like he has smiled or bathed in five years closes his eyes and drops the bottle. Her doesn't smell the smoke. But Irisa isn't close enough to him to only smell him. The scent catches the air and she turns to look at the ship. A caravel. And its on fire. "Good Gods," she mutters, reaching for the homeless man with her to guide him away by the arm.

Ian checked command + war at difficulty 35, rolling 17 higher.

Raymesin follows Cambria's gaze, his eyes widening. "Might recommend we ain't 'ere when that arrives," he says to her. "Could get... interestin'." In the same way that the Lowers can often get... interesting.

Arcadia hearing Mikani, turns her gaze towards the burning boat. "Gods and spirits" she mutters under her breath and she begins to help Rysen move people away off the dock.

Ahmar looks behind him with a look of confusion at all the people yelling. He turns back to the water. He tilts his head at the burning boat coming straight at them. He unwraps his spear while considering the speed of the boat. He takes a couple of steps back and stops. Just facing the water, and the flaming incoming boat. He thuds the blunt end of the spear in the ground and waits. Seems he feels far enough away.

The fishmonger gives an inelegant squawk and then bends to begin flinging whole and sectioned fish into a large basket. Juniper reverses course to tug at the woman's arm. "I'll pay for your catch, Jassi, come on. You're worth more than fish!"

Acantha dips her head with a smile to Elisha, but doesn't say anything while she's going to dig the ship that she's had for years out of the snowbank. Because her companion is having a moody time. Then the Beaver reaches up and tugs her hair, bringing her attention to the boat and the others, "Noted, Benny. Lets get out of her. You hold Evanders boat, please?" she asks him as she hands it back. Then she's scooping up the beaver and backing away, "I think that the general consensus of get away from the docks is one that should be followed." she calls out, but she keeps her eyes peeled to see if anyone needs help moving.

Rysen steps back at Merek's request, but not before he's certain Rukhnis is moving away as well. He grins wolfishly at Mikani's warning, and says under his breath, "Lycene armor is a little on the heavy side." He makes his way to a safe distance paying close attention as the ship moves towards the docks, ready to help douse the fire or help the sailors should they finally reach land.

"Spirits above and below," Rukhnis mutters, eyes a little wide. "Lord Rysen. We must move off, for they are surely not going to. If anyone from the ship survives this at all, they are going to need a great deal of care." She reached out to snag a young girl who is about to bolt, evidently taking fleeing more seriously than most of the adults are. "Child," she says sharply. "Run to the clinic and tell them to assemble stretchers, bandages, and all manner of supplies, and make themselves ready. A great many wounded are coming."

Mikani checked perception + survival at difficulty 25, rolling 9 lower.

"Oh bloody..." Salvador says as the unmistakable sight of the burning ship comes into view, "They are going to need to stop that ship or they'll run aground!" He says, glancing about a little, perhaps trying to estimate where the ship might run aground if left uncontrolled.

Thea sees the smoke in the distant, the smell invading her nose. Hearing Mikani, she spies the boat and begins helping usher people from the docks.,"Gods, the Duches is going to be angry ."

"Let's get off the docks," Cambria says to Raymesin, not needing the shouting of the Guardsmen to prompt her. She she begins to make haste, her Guardians following, she says something over her shoulder to Raymesin.

Elisha remains oblivious to everything but Mikani, after getting a pouch that makes his eyes widen slightly. "They call me Eli. And I can. I will." When he finally notices all the bustle, he pales somewhat, looks uncertain and afraid, then finally springs into action by pulling a small tobacco pouch from beneath his skirt and packing his pipe again.

Arcadia of course has time for a joke, turning to Rysen, "So I shouldn't push you in the water?" Glancing at Salvador, "Is there anyway to stop a runaway boat from a dock?"

Estelle comes rushing into the port cheeks flushed and out of breath as she starts trying to take measure of the approaching catastrophe. "I saw the smoke, and heard-" She shakes her head then, and rather than explain herself instead looks around for some way to help. Seeing the people still in the danger zone, the Mercy joins with the others trying to hurry the residents and visitors away from the oncoming danger of the docks while staying some distance away herself. "Quickly now- hurry away!" Another glance towards the impending boat has the young woman looking more pale.

Calaudrin checked command + leadership at difficulty 25, rolling 20 higher.

Ahmar cracks his neck and yawns a little from his spot halfway down the dock. Just waiting.

Ian appears out of the warehouse, now, with a couple of dockhands in orbit around him. His sharp, clipped voice holds the attention of the young men, even with the sight of what's coming at them, and coming fast. "You. Jones. You said you know where there are more buckets stored? Good. Take these two and get them. Hey." Now he's collaring random passers-by. Possibly even player characters who want something to do. (Ie, please feel free to assume Ian's talking to you if you want.) "We may be dealing with a fire here. This row of buildings here --" He gestures. "Knock on the doors and make sure the people inside know. I'd rather not see anyone stuck on an upper floor."

Mikani watches as the others get people off the dock. "Okay Eli." Mika flashes a very warm grin at the man. "Now get off the dock." Her eyes look back at the ship before she dives into the water to swim at the ship.

Mikani checked dexterity + athletics at difficulty 20, rolling 10 higher.

Rukhnis shoots Arcadia a look that is dark and a little outraged, as if she doesn't feel there's much place for levity at the moment. She makes a quiet growling noise in the back of her throat and moves further off from what appears to be the impending doom at the docks, even as she turns her gaze back to the water to watch grimly.

Mikani checked dexterity + athletics at difficulty 35, rolling 15 higher.

Salvador checked perception + sailing at difficulty 25, rolling 10 higher.

"Gods and spirits," says Rysen to Arcadia with a smile, repeating the phrase she often teases him with, "Believe it or not, I've practiced swimming in this armor. I'd survive and Sir Merek would have to arrest you, while I gave a full and /detailed/ report of your attempted murder to Lady Iliana." Rysen's eyes narrows as Mikani dives into the water, and he grows silent, watching her swim when she moves close enough to the surface.

Merek checked dexterity + athletics at difficulty 20, rolling 25 higher.

Merek checked dexterity + athletics at difficulty 35, rolling 9 lower.

"That's a month's rent!" the fishmonger wails as Juniper steers her away from her little cart. "/I'll/ pay your rent," the ex-courtier assures her. "Go!" A healthy push gets the buxom moving along with the evacuating crowd before she finds herself pulled up short by Ian's command. She affords him a startled dark-eyed glance-- and then a nod. To that bank of doors the young woman runs, and there'll be precious little skin on her knuckles left, once she's done knocking and banging and calling out (with a trained singer's voice), "Out, out! Fire! Fire's coming, out and up!"

Calaudrin able to get some of the people to start moving, but not all of them. In particular, he ends up in a rather drawn out argument with a man that wants to save a crate full of beets. He's pushing the crate across the docks. "It's not worth it, I'll pay you- here. Take the silver for the whole crate, just move!" Fighting with someone over beets is really pretty on par with the course of his life.

Raymesin keeps pace with Cambria easily, replying to her even as they move away from the waterfront in the company of Cambria's guards.

10 inflicted and Merek is harmed for minor damage.

Acantha checked command + leadership at difficulty 25, rolling 12 higher.

Merek seems to be doing well to file people away, but once he is assured most of them will, he moves for the waters then he swims with Mikani to reach the ship she is moving for also, though he seems to be having less fortune with actually finding a place that isn't on fire, while he calls to Mikani, "Hey, pull me up with you!" he exclaims, if she does, if not he will be trying his best to climb once again, meanwhile flames burn away part of his attire when he surfaces.

Arcadia almost responds to Rysen, but Mikani in the water and Rhuknis's growl stops her. Instead, Cady starts to busy herself with moving people off the docks and finding some rope and buckets and shoving them at people. "Here you go."

Elisha is still packing his pipe bowl with trembling hands when Mikani tells him to get off the dock. He obeys before he even sees her dive off the dock, slipping away through the crowd and chaos to a safe distance, where he turns and stares back at the unfolding events with a curious, intent gaze.

"Perhaps one of the cranes." Salvador says, "Grappling hooks to bring it in at a safe spot, or if it comes through a narrows, a well anchored chain to halt it's movement." He says to Arcadia, still peering over towards the flaming ship.

Ahmar checked dexterity + athletics at difficulty 35, rolling 11 lower.

Thea checks to make sure she has her medic items filled-not that she ever leaves without them, but--habits and all. Shes ready. She hurries over and grabs a bucket and begins handing them over.

Irisa looks on as people start jumping into the water. On purpose. In the winter at the docks next to a large city. She imagines what the things floating and partially frozen are and makes a face before continuing to guide her new friend away slowly. The lack of panic is probably helping reassure the people around her. Hopefully. But thats a big ship. Probably not moving fast enough.

While Calaudrin argues with the man over his beets, he looks over at the water and sees Merek dive into the water and also get set on fire. He nods his head a couple of times at some internal comment and then whistles, pushing the beet guy. If he wants to die over root vegetables, who is he to stop him? He moves onto the next slow mover, giving them ample motivation. Hopefully.

Arcadia peers over at the crane, scratching her head she gestures Salvador towards it. "Thank you can do it?"

Rukhnis peels her eyes away from the oncoming ship again with some effort as people begin to break into action, and she gives a sharp shake of her head. Having ascertained that Rysen isn't going to get himself killed right at this moment, and seeming to feel there's little use in standing here staring, she joins Ian in an appeal to the bystanders. "There are going to be many people hurt, and if anyone is to survive this at all, we will need the materials for splints and bandages, along with fresh water for wounds and burns, at the very least. Also crutches and stretchers to move people to the clinic. I am going to fetch whatever I may from there. Anyone who would like to keep these poor souls off the wheel for a time longer may come with me."

The ship is growing closer, the waves cresting and splitting around the hull, aiming directly at the docks and showing no signs of stopping, or even slowing. As Mikani and Merek dive into the water, they are able to meet up with the ship. Mikani comes up and is able to find handholds, sccaling up to the top deck of the ship. When she gets up there, she sees four people, focused mainly on trying unsuccessfully to put out the fire. One of the four is attempting to slack the sails to slow, but they are clearly not familiar with the workings of a ship.

Merek does not fair as well, attempting to approach the ship, but he gets pushed into a burning part of the hull.

The dockhands that Ian sent for buckets start turning up with armfuls of them, and behind him the hooper has emerged from the warehouse with improvised buckets made from half-casks. As people start to spill out from the houses, the Kennex noble begins bringing them into his orbit as well. His thickly accented voice is pitched loud enough to carry as far as it needs to, and clipped enough to convey the urgency of the situation, but calm. He's a well of level certainty in a growing panic. "You look fast." He's caught the attention of a little girl who's standing around with wide eyes. "Run up the street to the medical clinic. Tell them what's going on here. They'll need to be ready for the people we send to them."

Juniper's purchases are being crushed beneath the feet of those evacuating. The basket's forgotten, dropped somewhere. Cod, bread, potatoes. They scatter, they roll, they're kicked and smashed to abandon. She pays the loss no mind. One door, another, a third, and she's beating on a fourth with her open palm now, continuing her shouts. She lingers only long enough for each door to be jerked open, not staying to see annoyance shift to alarm on the faces of those Ian's forethought has warned.

Meanwhile, on the docks, most of the civilians are following Calaudrin and Acantha's attempts to clear the area, though the more stubborn of them are dawdling, attempting to gather up their goods and cart them out of danger, not realizing the danger they are accepting as the ship comes closer.

Seems Ahmar's decision to refuse to run from the docks was for a reason. He starts sprinting down the dock as the boat gets closer. With a perhaps flourished twirl of his spear he buries the blade of the spear in the end of the dock and attempts to use the spear to vault on to the boat. It's a big boat though so he only makes it about halfway up and slams in to one of the port holes. His spear still stuck in the dock. He grunts but shrugs from his spot and crawls in to the hole enter the boat under the deck.

Rysen rushes to Rukhnis's side and begins to fill buckets with water, and puts the axe Merek made for him to good use, splitting nearby wood that doesn't seem vital for use as splits, stretchers and crutches.

Mikani helps Merek out of the fire before she calls out to those on the ship. Giving them orders to stop the ship. "Drop anchors. Pull the sails." She calls out giving them orders.

Estelle furrows her brow, attention shifting to focus on the more stubborn hold-outs among the vendors and others present at the dock. "These things can be replaced- you cannot!" She brings to bear the full force of her medical professional voice in chastising them to get a move on, brooking no arguments! "I will help to recoup your losses if that is really more important to you than your life! Come away now!"

Mikani checked wits + sailing at difficulty 35, rolling 18 higher.

Elisha stands back from the activity--well back--and finishes packing his bowl with haze. He crouches, still watching the unfolding events, and with a practiced hand raises a few sparks from his flint. He sucks on his pipe until the embers glow red, then he inhales deeply. He smokes, he coughs into his rag. He warms his hand on the bowl. He watches the activity closer to the water, the furl of the smoke, the untwining of the burning ropes on the ship, and the charred ash of the sails drifting like gray snowfall across the Lowers.

Acantha checked charm + diplomacy at difficulty 30, rolling 19 higher.

Arcadia remains dockside, filling buckets, handing out ropes. Shouting at passerbyes for supplies. If people are stupid enough to stay, they can do more than gawk.

Acantha and Benny are helping to get people moved away from the docks and making sure that they are at a safe distance. She gives a bit of a look back to see if there are more stragglers, which there is! The woman hurries back down to the people, "I will pay you for the things that are lost, these things are replaceable, your lives are not, please leave it and we will replace it." she pleads with them as she tries to move them. Benny even tugs on ones trouser leg to get them to move. At least he's not biting!

Salvador shakes his head slightly at Arcadia, "Not on my own." He says, raising the prosthethic arm, "I think it's coming in over... there." He says, pointing out a spot in particular, "If we don't get it slowed. We've got maybe three minutes before it hits." He gives a look towards her, "Organize your fire brigades nearby."

Merek checked dexterity + athletics at difficulty 35, rolling 57 higher. Merek rolled a critical!

Frowning to see so many bystanders still in danger, Rysen leaps onto a nearby crate and, thinking quickly, shouts at the top of his lungs, "By the gods!! Is that Prince Niklas!? He's giving away silver to the hard working folk of the Lowers!? Are you certain! Quickly, make way!!"

Arcadia checks with Salvador, pausing briefly "If you tell me what to do, I can do it. "

Ian takes a few steps closer to the dock, cautious on the icy street. The braced boots and cane suggest that this isn't really the best surroundings for him to be working in, but aside from a gait that's slow and a little unnatural, he doesn't show it. "Hey. You." He's started to target the people lingering on the docks, now, pulling more and more people into the preservation of the docks and surrounding neighborhood. "You know this place well? See if you can sort these people into a bucket brigade. The fire's not going to stay on that ship."

Cambria's eyes widen at something Raymesin says, as the pair stand well away from any potential...unfortunate accidents. Shortly thereafter, she nods, as though in understanding. "Your sophistication when it comes to the arts never fails to impress me, master Ulbran. I shall defer to your wisdom in this matter."

Ahmar checked dexterity + athletics at difficulty 20, rolling 9 higher.

Thea steps from the docks, backing away. Trying to guide the bystanders with her as she does so. Theyll be one less person to treat in the long run,"Either step away or grab a bucket---."

Merek takes out his rope and uses that to pull about his waist, then he uses his gloves to take ahold of the side of the ship, climbing it so that he can pull himself onto the deck of the ship also. The sheer willpower he uses to enact his skill is quite a sight, but can't relax until people are also safe.

Calaudrin has almost cleared most of the willing people in his immediate vicinity. Unfortunately, the docks are full of people so he's probably not close. He glances in the direction of the boat again before he starts physically shoving people forward and away. This is hard work. Caluadrin is getting too old for shit like this. "Of course this would happen. the. one. time. this. month. I. come. down. here," he mutters between gritted teeth.

"If we can turn the boom and hook the mast, we may slow it enough to limit the damage." Salvador says, "If we don't do it precisely, however, we cause it to turn or list, hitting where we don't want it to hit, and there are many aboard who could be hit by falling debris, or worse. We either try that, or organize a fire brigade where it's going to hit if they can't get the sails in, or the anchor down." he says, continuing with that critical look at the flaming ship, and all the attempts being made to board it.

Raymesin eyes the flaming ship and the people scrambling to get close to it, and shakes his head as he murmurs something to Cambria.

Rukhnis had paused only a moment to actually wait for help before dashing off in the direction of the clinic herself, and even if nobody was inclined to come along she seems to have done reasonably well by herself. Probably the two children sent towards the clinic as advance warning were some help in this. Now she's returned with a rickety barrow full of medical supplies of all kinds -- bandages especially, but also aloe salve and rosewater and other medicaments to war against pain and infection. She clunks the barrow to a halt some ways away from the main excitement of the docks, and hopefully far enough away to avoid direct disaster, and begins sorting through the supplies with a muttering monologue to herself in Eurusi.

"Why don't the other ships sink it?" Elisha asks a cobbler's apprentice standing nearby, waving his pipe. "Ah, well. Too late now? Would you like a puff? No? Very good haze. Not that black sand. Gives you nightmares. I saw a tiend of tiends being marched through an abandoned village ..." He stops speaking when the apprentice walks away from him, and looks back toward the action, coughing again into his rag.

Many things happen all at once. Mikani is able to cut the rope to give slack to the sails, but the forward momentum is too great, even with an anchor dropped, to halt all forward progress. The flaming hull rams into the docks, the wood gangways buckling, sending people sprawling, some falling into the ice-cold water filled with hazards. Given Mikani's efforts, it is not as bad as it could have been. It is, however, still bad.

Merek, climbing up the side of the ship is mid-way up the hull at the time of impact, only his incredible grip on the rope keeping him from flying off.

Between the efforts of Calaudrin, Acantha, Estelle, Rysen and Salvador's accurate estimation of the point of impact, many of the civilians are herded out, though there are likely still about ten or twelve caught in the impact. Barrels of oil too heavy to move are crushed on impact, the lick of flames rapidly spreading, causing screams of terror and pain as spatters sprays those nearby.

The light of the fire turns much of the world a horrible orange. Cambria, standing beside Raymesin and well away from the docks, is witness to the caravel crashing...and crushing several barrels of oil. The viscous liquid courses into the air, and spatters many and more people. "Someone just slipped into a porthole," she notes to her companion with a furrowed brow. Even so, her attention is pulled towards those who have been injured. "Ray, help me with those ones there?" She gestures to the three who are clearly in shock, moving to approach them and offer what aid she may.

Irisa continues mustering the people away, gesturing with both arms out, letting them see the blade she has that identifies her as a Knight. She's a little more stuffy with her demands as the ship closes in. "Everyone down!" she suddenly yells at the people around her. Her and the man beside her use their cloaks like shields against the flying, burning oils. Enough people see it and imitate it just in time. When the screams begin, the Knight rises quickly and stands. Looking around, she grabs a few able-bodied and pulls them up. Her outstretched finger aims right at the burning barrels. "Get them into the water before they explode or we're going to lose the whole section of waterfront!" Which, to her mind, is bad. Very bad. Swinging her cloak up over her head, she bends over and charges in to try and start pushing the barrels into the water.

Her footing is sure, her steps fleet. Cambria navigates the chaos in order to reach one of the injured. A young woman, with moderately severe burns. Murmuring soothing words, Cambria pulls the poor lass to safety. Or at least a place safer than where she currently was!

Ian is in the middle of bullying an especially stubborn middle aged woman into saving her own foolish -- into helping out from way, way over there -- when the ship collides with the dock. He sees it coming before she does, and grabs her ("MY LORD! I'M MARRIED!"), turning her so that he puts himself between her and a sudden shower of flaming debris, relying on his high collared, heavy leather coat to protect them both. THIS, finally gets her attention, and now, NOW, she wants to help. "WE HAVE TO HELP THOSE PEOPLE!" She yells, inches from Ian's ear. "THEY'RE GOING TO DROWN!" She's going to go into the icy water herself! But Ian convinces her instead to take charge of his coat and cane and boots, and take them back to the hooper's warehouse. Where she is to take over direction of the bucket brigade, because even Ian can see this woman was born to give orders. He slits the laces of his boots with his diving knife as a fast means of removing them while taking deep, fast breaths, and then goes into the water and disappears below the surface.

Most people are trying to put out their own fires. Irisa charges into the center of the blaze, risking everything to get in there. That cloak, at the least, isn't coming back without a singe. While everyone is running away, she is one of the few running towards the danger. Seeing exactly what needs to be done, she gets down low and crashes her shoulder into one of the oil barrels. With the fire melting the snow and ice, her boots find purchase and she more or less roars in anger, shoving the inanimate beast forward and then crashing through a hole in the docks and into the icy waters below. The fires atomp it roll into the water and extinguish. She does not even look for other help coming, she just moves to shove her shoulder into the next.

Raymesin follows on Cambria's heels, getting another of the shocky injured. He doesn't have soothing words, but he can grab the young man by the collar and pull him towards safety. Clad in leathers as he is he's not overly worried about the fire, but it's probably as well that Cambria cleared the path for him.

He signals for the couple of guards that accompanied him to start helping drag injured people away from fire. "Come on, lets grab these ones and go before this gets much worse." They're able to get hands on three of the injured and started hauling them unceremoniously at away from the flames. This is a Calaudrin Estardes rescue, not a concierge service.

Rukhnis checked wits + survival at difficulty 10, rolling 44 higher.

Ahmar checked luck at difficulty 15, rolling 10 higher.

Arcadia is slow. A burning boat has crashed into the dock and spat oil at her. She blinks dumbly as people duck and dive and run about. Her breath catches, and very /very/ slowly she realizes she's on fire! "Oh!" Is about all she can say as she starts to hit ineffectively at her flaming pants.

Back at her wheelbarrow-medical station a short ways from the dock proper, Rukhnis makes a startled noise at the impact of the ship, even though she had to know it was coming, and soon. Dropping a tin of salve on top of a heap of blankets, she whirls around, only to see the terrible aftermath of crushed and bleeding bodies, and burning oil spattered everywhere on those who didn't fare worse. But she doesn't pause for long. Spying Juniper close by after that woman's been sounding the alarm of the fire and is ironically now on fire herself, Rukhnis grabs up the topmost blanket and bounds towards her, throwing the heavy fabric over her and bringing her none too gently to the ground -- but it's better than burning alive, isn't it? She wraps the blanket smotheringly around Juniper's form, as best she can, rolling with her over the slushy road at the same time to extinguish the flames. This done, she lets out a quiet grunt and immediately leaps up again, waving one hand and calling out to those helping the other wounded, "Bring them this way, where they can receive aid out of harm's way!"

Ahmar makes his way in to one of the under decks... which one? He can't know. He is not a boat person. He stands there... far too casually for a moment while he digs through a pouch and pulls out some rolled tobacco. He reaches up and lights it on the flaming deck above him and takes a drag... exhales and then begins wandering around the deck. No sense of urgency, except for when it comes to making sure he keeps his /glorious/ curls away from any flames. He just wanders around a bit, no real sense of direction of what he is doing, or where he is going, or what he is looking for, but hey, he might find something of value? He has been lucky before. He takes another drag on his smoke as he wanders in the underbelly of the massive ship, room to room, or are they called holds? He doesn't know, he isn't a boat person. His face is stoic and expressionless, odd considering he is kind of lost inside a burning ship. This is one of those situations where it pays to be a northerner and not need furs that is for sure.

Estelle just has time to exhale a breath of relief after shooing away an obstinate fruit vendor before the sickening crunch of wood, stone, and steel announce the crash landing of the caravel. With a shocked yelp she's sent sprawling by the impact, landing on a sudden jumble of abandoned carts. Sadly it isn't all that far from one of the large barrels of oil which is set alight by a spiraling piece of ship wreckage and soon bursts. While Estelle is able to duck her head in time, some of the burning oil lands on her upper arm and causes her to let out a sharp cry before rolling over and smothering the flames . "Not good, not good!" she exhorts herself, clambering over the ruins to safety and where she can better treat others with less risk of further injury. Her yelp becomes a scream that's soon muffled beneath Rukhnis' efforts. Down they both go, and Juniper's decidedly slower in getting back to her feet, sleeve gone, arm and shoulder red with blisters. "Thank you, gods bless, Mistress... gods." It must hurt but she sets her jaw against that, narrows her eyes through tears, and goes where Rukhnis points to empty out her medic's bag, and begin seeing to those in far worse shape.

Acantha picks up Benny and throws her cloak around her companion to shield him from any burning oil, that doesn't help her though. Once she's sure nothing else is going to splash she drops Benny in a snowbank with the toy ship he carries and then puts herself out. Because burning /sucks/!

A triage hospital has been rapidly set up on the edge of the docks where the ground is stable and not, you know, burning. Cambria, with her guards at her side picks through the burning, swaying docks and between the three of them, are able to carry out a trio of burnt victims. They are carried over to the makeshift hospital, leaving only two victims on the docks.

In the water, Ian has drug one of the victims to the edge of the dock, three more still floating in the water.

The Ship is still on fire, the bow fully engulfed in flames, the oil soaked dock is starting to burn as well. Inside the ship, in the captain's cabin, five figures are unconscious on the floor. Cambria manages to save three others, with the help of her Guardians and Raymesin, no doubt. It is a lot of hard work, but well worth it.

Ian breaches the water with a deep breath, weighed down by the non-responsive form of a man. He tows the man to the edge, keeping his head above water with the expertise of someone who has done this kind of recovery before, scanning the dock as he swims. "Lady Thea!" His voice is breathless, either from diving or the impossibly cold water crushing at his lungs, but he gets enough volume to hopefully get Thea's attention. "I saw someone else down there. Can you take him?" When he's sure she's got a grip, he leaves her to wrestle the man out of the water and disappears under the surface again. A short time later, he surfaces again, and starts to tow someone else back to the dock.

Raymesin makes his way back out onto the dock with Cambria and her guards to retrieve another of the injured, but this time his footing - and his balance - betray him. While helping someone up he slips, overbalances and lands in the flames; leathers or no leathers, that still hurts. The air turns blue with swearing as well as blue with smoke as he extracts his singed self from the fire.

Irisa is probably tough to see at times since she looks like she is ignoring everything else like the calls for help. One more barrel of oil goes over the side. A quick movement to the next, and she manages to get it on its side and roll it into the water also. The last, by the time she gets to it, is nearly bouncing. The oil inside boiling, the wood creaks. One of the iron retaining bolts fires off like a gun, embedding into the side of a building. The whole thing about to explode and take everyone with it, Irisa dumps all of her strength into it and dumps the flaming barrel over the side of the docks. It hits the water and, so hot, the whole thing steams with a high whistle as the oil and iron cool in the water. The Knight turns and see's her cloaking already burning, she throws it into the water and moves to grab someone else out of the water.

Mikani hears the men on the ship speaking Eurusi. There were people below. She points out three and speaks to them in Eurusi. "You go and start grabbing the people. The rest of you continue on the fire." Mikani looks at Merek. "There are people below. We need to get them out." She follows the men below to start getting the men out. Arcadia gives Salvador a quick grin of thanks. But, her brain is surely short circuiting today. Leaning down she begins to brush away burning and smoldering debris from the deck. Her hands and knees come into contact with more scolding hot bits of wood and metal while she unknowingly rubs more oil into her clothes. Stupid stupid girl.

As the number of wounded led over to the triage site grows, Rukhnis gets busy getting them settled on blankets laid out on the bare ground. It's not much, but at least it's a little protection against the unhealthy chill and damp of the street. Each person she sees to gets a quick inspection, a silent gauging of the severity of their wounds, and then she has a few words of quiet reassurance to those less injured, while victims more seriously affected by the disaster receive the most thorough attention to start with. As she washes, bandages, and splints with gentle efficiency, Rukhnis also has a nod of wordless appreciation for Juniper who's come right over to offer her own skills in spite of the wounds she too has sustained.

Rukhnis looks less pleased with the people who have been pulled from the water but seem otherwise uninjured, though her frown is clearly concern for the fact that they're liable to freeze to death, and not some personal judgment on them. Probably. "If they are fit to walk," she says, to anyone who might listen, "they should be taken to the clinic straightaway to be warmed and checked up on further there."

And it looks like Mikani is following after Merek. When he's made it into the room, he calls back to them, "Come in here, and get these people awake, I am letting the smoke escape, after that we can wake'm and carry them out or get them into the waters, but they can't be moved like this easily!" he exclaims. His axe makes a nice placed and firm hole in the hull, as he keeps on working away, just as much as he needs, the door closed also either after Mikani comes back in or if she goes elseplace, either way, it will allow the smoke to escape and not keep coming into that room also.

Using his height and strength he opens that door above them to the deck. Using the pulley system he starts slowly getting the weakened people up to the deck. He moves as fast as he can right now. Once he manages to get the people trapped in the cargo hold up and moving on to the deck he starts inspecting the non human cargo down there. Once the people are no longer trapped and on the deck for Mikani to take care of, his sense of urgency dissipates again. Eventually his search of the cargo locates three ornate expensive looking chests. His eyebrow raises and a slight smirk crosses his lips.

Estelle coughs as she finally manages to arrive at the triage area, sweat running down her brow. Dusting off some of the soot from her sleeves, she offers a nod of gratitude to Rukhnis, Juniper, and any other healers before joining them in trying to aid the wounded. The red-haired woman moves over to start treating one of the burn victims, applying the little bit of ointment she has on hand to the blistering while murmuring a swiftly-practiced prayer to Lagoma.

There's a rhythm to working in a team of healers. Rukhnis has organized things, set them well in hand. Her efforts at triage-- and sending the walking wounded /onwards/-- helps focus Juniper's own work. She claims her corner of the makeshift camp and it begins-- packing snow against burns, cutting clothing away from blisters and breaks, stabilizing, soothing. She's talking, a low and soothing string of words, but if queried later she'll have no idea what she's said to the suffering, those can hear her and those who can't. It's work, and work conducted in deep trust that those farther out on the dock will keep worse from spreading to where the medics perform the labours.

Acantha /tries to go help one of the people on the docks, but her and fire don't mix apparently. She misteps and falls through the boards. "Damn it!" she grumbles as she starts to try to pull herself up.

As Ian gets to the dock with the second person, looking more breathless and a little more tired than the first time as the cold cuts deeper into him, a weak voice comes to him over the water begging for help behind him. He looks around for Thea, and realizes that she's still dragging the first guy to the medical cart Ruhkris has set up. He also notices Irisa, and is able to hand the person off to her, with a gasped out word of thanks. He slips under the surface and comes up next to the person who was calling for help; she catches him off guard by immediately grabbing onto him for dear life. Both of them go under.

The ship is continuing to burn, but as the fire eats into the wood of the ship, it begins to take on water. This is a good/bad situation. As water puts out fire, but that means the ship is sinking. As it stands, there are still 5 unconscious people in the captain's quarters, though there is a hole in the hull there, helping to clear out the smoke. There are at least half of those from the cargo hold currently being lifted up on the hoist from the cargo deck, but the hold has a good two inches of water on the floor, and there are still at least ten people down there, along with Ahman and his chests.

Rukhnis, Estelle and Juniper are doing fantastic work in the triage tents, helping the most badly burned first and then working down to the lesser injuries. These three clearly have that in hand.

In the water, Lord Rysen has joined Lord Ian in the river, while Dame Irisa assists in pulling the rescued from the icy water. Oil barrels bob along the river, floating away from the danger, thanks to Dame Irisa's quick thinking and brawny muscles.

Ian fights his way to the surface, and tries to keep his and his charge's heads both above water, calm her down, and hopefully getting them both back to the flaming dock. "That dock is on fire!" She sputters at him, clearly never one to miss a detail. He hands her off to Irisa, if she's nearby, and Thea, if not. Then he looks over his shoulder at the burning ship, at the people clustering on the surface, at Merek cutting a hole in the hull from the inside out. He scans the dock and strikes out through the water towards the closest moored rowboat.

Raymesin, no longer becoming one with the fires thanks to Cambria's assistance, gets himself put out in short order. Either that, or his leathers just don't burn too well. A hand reaches for the sword to be sure its still on her side before she looks off to the triage. She just walks along the periphery the fire, looking for survivors if anyone needs.

Mikani helps move the people up the stairs. Mikani hearing Rysen on one of her trips call out. She shouted back. "Working on getting them off now!" In Eurusi she calmly speaks to the crew. Best way to get them all out of this was to keep their heads. Freaking out wasn't going to save them now. Her words over and over were about watching their step and how to get off the ship.

Merek takes a moment to look between the men in that room. The smoke has cleared a bit, enough that they will manage a bit more, enough he can come back for some of them, so he picks up two and doesn't even worry on bothering with debating with him self, if he can save each of the five, he will. With two, he makes to the deck so he can place them away from the flame.
The man calls to those on the docks, "We have people that aren't awake, they'll need someone to pick them up when they are sent your way!" Then he's making his way back to the quarters also.

The stream of wounded slows and finally comes to a stop, as the last people requiring rescue are led from the conflagration on the docks or pulled, shivering and wet, from out of the icy water. With three capable healers at work, all the patients are receiving the care they need, bandaging and ointment for their bodies, soothing words for their spirits. Those who can do so are headed off to the clinic, and Rukhnis adds absently as they go, "Please be sure that someone sends stretchers to help carry those who have been less fortunate." But then, of course, there's still the ship out there, burning and sinking at once, and all those who might still be on board and not yet past the point of care. The Eurusi woman pauses as she gently sponges blood and soot from the clammy forehead of one of the last of the wounded, her dark gaze shifting over to her fellow healers, and then out to the heroic people on the docks and in the water, and to the ship itself. She squints at it through the drift of snowflakes, frowning tiredly, clearly wondering what's still to come.

Ahmar looks between his sweet sweet loot and the last remaining people he needs to save. He grunts and ignores the loot for now and struggles to get the last of the humans out of the cargo hold. The chests can wait. Especially if he doesn't tell anyone about them.

Estelle takes a page out of Juniper's book, using her reach to scoop up some of the nearby snow to start cooling down the assorted burns even as sweat starts to roll down her own forehead. She spares a glance towards the sinking ship- but quickly shakes her head and refocuses on the nearer patients, applying her talents through more familiar channels. As more casualties are brought in thanks to the heroics, the Mercy does her best to assist with the triage and treatment as directed by Rukhnis.

Rysen swims to the edge of the ship and using a combination of hand holds and fallen rigging begins to pull himself up to the deck, breathing out clouds of steam. When he reaches the top, he searches for the longest rope he can find that still has one end firmly attached to the ship. Looking below he shouts to Irisa, "Knight! Please tie off this rope somewhere safe!" and hurls it with all his might towards Irisa. Turning to the crew still on the top deck, he says with fervor in his storm grey eyes, "get some cloth, rip your shirts or coats or whatever you have to and use it to slide down that line as soon as its secure."

Acantha manages to get up thanks to Salvador and there's a dip her head to him, "Thank you kind sir." she tells him. Benny however is FREAKING OUT on the edge of the flames. She holds a hand up, "I'm fine. You keep Lord Evander's boat safe!" she calls to the beaver.

Irisa hears the call for a knight from above and looks around, surprised at someone calling. She spots nobody until she looks up to the ship and see's Rysen throwing a rope. She steps aside to let it fall, before gathering it up. She squints throug hthe flames, trying to make out what he is telling to the other people. The motions of it are what clue her in and she gets the meaning. Tying it to a moor would be bad. She runs back and throws the whole bundle through a window, smashing it loudly. Grabbing the other end through the door next to it, she ties it off securely and steps away from the wall, intending to catch them as they come down.

How does it all go so quickly? One moment, the air's filling with moans and screams. The next, the relative quiet is a hopeful thing-- not ominous, but productive, as those more sorely and grievously injured are stabilized. Juniper moves to the next patient and finds Rukhnis' work already showing. The one after that has calmed under Estelle's ministrations. For this, she's able to find a smile, and though it's strained by her own pain, there's relief there as well. She bends to secure a splint around an ankle gone askew-- then flops down to sit. Remaining snow is scooped up, pressed to her own arm, her shoulder; she hisses softly.

With Mikani, Rysen, Ian, Merek and the upright sailors all working together, the weakened crew are able to be taken off the boat. Some are thrown into the water, for Ian to haul into his rowboat, the others are lowered to the dock and guided out. But where is Ahmar? The boat is very clearly sinking now, and there is no sight of the man.

Ahmar drags his loots over to the lift. It takes some work. It isn't easy. Perhaps luck is on his side today. Who are we kidding, it always is. He hasn't even burned his wild hair yet. Then he even manages to use the pulley to get himself and all three of his heavy chests up. When he makes it up on to the deck he sees that all the people he saved were indeed saved... so he can focus on tossing the chests off on to where he can grab them afterwards. He isn't moving very fast at all still. Eventually he gets them off and jumps down after them. He shakes out his hair as he lands next to his sweet loots. He takes a heavy breath and sits his ass down on one of the chests. "Well... not too bad I'd say." He searches his pouch for another smoke... "Anyone got a smoke?"

Ian clamors onto the rowboat and leans over to unmoor it from the dock. He starts to row out to the far side of the ship, away from the burning dock, and as he gets closer, he moors it to the caravel's anchorchain so it won't float off even if there's no one actively keeping it in place. Then he looks up, up, up at the hole Merek cut in the hull, and gives a sharp, loud whistle. What follows is the opposite of pretty, but desperate times. He helps some people who decide to just straight up go for it onto the rowboat, and goes into the water again and again to fish out others. It takes a lot to get Ian to the point of shivering, but he's well and truly there by the time he and his rescuees maneuver the laden rowboat back. His complexion is washed out, his lips turning blue. He's helpless to actually get anyone in the rowboat onto an un-scorched part of the dock, but hopefully there are people to do that.
