The expedition looms ever closer, and I find myself both glad and worried. I am always excited to set out upon a new adventure, but I seldom have gone out with such a large group or in such force. I have usually been a lone adventurer, and this journey I am tasked with the unique duty of guardianship.. Not to mention that I have seen the 'progress' they expect to make each day. I have never seen a group plan to crawl so slowly towards a goal..travelling with large camps is certainly a change from the freedom of the road, I admit.

Still, the cause is righteous and the need is significant, so, I shall strive to be worthy of the company I am being allowed to keep, for they are amazing individuals one and all.

Yesterday, I had the privilege to help put to rest an old spirit. One that had sacrificed their life to safeguard a once beautiful and sacred place. My heart aches at what was done to it, and to have seen the beauty and wonder it once held, to feel it's presence was something else. Ethereal and otherworldly. And then to watch as others ignorance and greed destroyed it, is slightly devasting and just a little heart-wrenching.

After experiencing this I wonder, what more can I do, to protect the land, the forests, the animals, the people? How else can I serve not just them, but Petrichor himself, so that we do not lose more ancient hidden places?

I am thankful, that Gaston is better, and we were able to remove the armband.

Petrichor, Great Lord of The Land,
Grant us your benevolence in our time of need,
Shelter us under your ancient branches,
Bless us with the wisdom to respect and cherish all that you give,
Guide us to be humble and thankful, and to show others the kindness you so freely share.
And last to welcome and protect those in need.

It fills me with exceeding joy to see many of my friends and family out there today at the carnival, enjoying themselves as they took part in the games and explored the tents. Such events are hard to pull together and I could not have done it without the help of the Keatons, Lady Monique, and everyone else who were patient and supported me during some of the more complex games.

Welcome to the word, Princess Ellara.

You don't know how happy you've made your family, especially me - your favorite aunt, who is going to teach you all the wonderful things about sailing and driving your Uncle Edain up the wall when you're older. I have been saving one of my last cuffs for you, reshaped into the cutest little bracelets for you and all of my darling little future nieces.

Hopefully Marian will give me a niece, as well as Caelis...

I've little to no interest in fashion, but even I understand the importance of communicating with one's appearance.

I've begrudgingly accepted that I need to relinquish my sartorial autonomy to someone more qualified, and so begins the search for the right seamstress.

Oh right, for the curious. I do finally have a Champion, and terms have been set.

Once a date is set I am confident my Champion will set things right, for I am innocent of the charges, of course.

Some day though, I wish the Pantheon would warn me from getting into these situations, I suppose that may eliminate some of their amusement though.

Things I have come to realize. The Niece always has something up her sleeve. Beware her Sleeve! In regards to the Nephew-In-Law. Easier to simply turn him upside down and shake him. Even then, there's probably some other tidbit or item stuffed up someplace hidden. Well not like -that-.... wait then again you never know. I really need to think before I think, or speak it aloud.

Busy week. Interesting week. I am glad however, I was able to meet the Keatons. Between their knowledge of Dogs, and their interest in horses. I daresay we shall have a good trade of interests! Looking forward to hunting with them at the least, I am curious as to how the Nephew-In-Law will do. Though I believe has has a boar-hunting expedition first.

I've recently begun sewing again. Much like sculpting and painting, it was a hobby I took up during my travels to help pass the time. Usually I wasn't able to do much past bits of common cloth, but I've always found a certain kind of joy in creation of any types. I sew all my own clothes, of course, but I kept it to that until recently. Now, it seems there's something new in my life that's provided inspiration to push a little harder, strive for more, and open myself up to interesting and admittedly surprisingly exciting possibilities.

So, I took some sewing lessons and more recently completed a commission for a couple of sets of seasilk dresses. I was very pleased with the quality and the customer left my shop happy. I think I'll be taking on some more commissions of the kind, along with my leatherwork.

In spite of the fact that the City of Arx seems fairly dark with all the looming threats ... I have to admit. The future looks bright from here.

I deeply enjoy opening up the Great Hall for feasts, particularly ones devoted to spending time with those of the fealty. It is a true honor to sit amongst my vassals and see them enjoying one another. The company provided is top notch. I was happy to introduce Princess Donella into the fold, and see so many cups raised to her. I have no doubt that our marriage will make Redrain all the stronger and look forward to seeing what we can accomplish as a whole.

Today I got to welcome Princess Ellara to the world. She is beautiful and she is perfect, and she is the first of our family born after the Tragedy of Sanctum. There will be many challenges a head for you, but I know you will love it here.

The Cairn Valardin Carnival has been an experience! Not only did I get to meet the brand new Princess Ellara Valardin (can't wait to babysit!), but I also got to partake in a hair-styling contest, and. Well. I think I owe master Aksel booze and an apology. I tried for a Kraken, but it became closer to a storm-draggled tree in the water.

The Snowball fight was interesting, as I somehow found myself wagering with master Aksel, and I let Lady Desiree dictate the terms of it. Which I think may have been subconsciously trying to let him get one back at me.

Which means I'm now awaiting a surprise gift as, well. Honestly, the King's team was the safe bet.

I didn't see the kiss coming, though.

I suppose one of the ideas I have always been slowest to come around to is the idea that one must still make time for revelry in times of hardship. That I must not remand my people to labour and misery simply because there happens to be important work to be done.

Princess Katarina organized a wonderful carnival celebration at Valardin Manor, and it set me at ease to see so many people laughing and playing games, even if King Alaric and his absolute lackeys did attempt to assassinate me with snowballs. Fortunately, I was avenged by a noble-hearted Redrain soldier.

(I ought to note I'm being facetious before someone starts a war over this.)

Back in the quiet of my study, my thoughts are with Calarian and Reese and their expedition party in the Gray Forest.

It isn't often there are things that truly alarm me. People will be people and all that, and most people have investment in keeping life going, regardless of their politics.

The Darkwater Deeps cracking open and expanding? Anyone sane should be completely terrified of the potential results of that.

I can only hope a solution can be found.

Dearest Princess Ellara,

Welcome to the world! All the bright and beautiful things she offers, awaiting you to learn and discover!

I am a touch sad I was not there when you came into this world, but soon you will be lavished with more love then you will possibly know what to do with. Not just from your parents, and your aunts, uncles, and cousins. But by your "other" family too. Vex has been waiting ever so (im)patiently for your arrival. I can only imagine to his great relief that you are now here. His person. I look forward to showing you how to train him, so he will be the greatest well-behaved friend and guardian. Soon, you will have more new friends to join you, a cousin and my own little cousin, whom I hope will become your BFF, just as your Daddy is mine.

All my love,
Your "Auntie" Shae

The festival was quite an event. I got to be a whiskered pirate and fight with snowballs. I've had time to think recently and I think sometimes I view the world as it isn't meant to be viewed. Sometimes things are necessary and sometimes they aren't. I sometimes wish some things were not necessary, I wish we could discover new exciting ways to solve issues. In any case, I've learned a lot recently. That said all the white journals seem to be a mix of happy and angry people. I wish everyone could be happy.

Ah, the carnival was such a joy to attend! I don't often spend time at the larger social events, perhaps obviously, but I certainly could not miss one thrown by a princess of House Valardin. Truly, I had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed speaking with old friends as well as new people that hopefully will be future friends. I hope the weapons I made for the event are well received, especially after seeing the stunning contributions so many people gave! Princess Katarina's vision truly came to life and so beautifully. I didn't get to speak to as many as I had hoped, nor linger as long as I might have wished, but the time that I was there was genuinely fantastic. I'm very glad I went!
