The very best Harlequin that I know. Very best. Best rat-dog ever, as well.

I don't know the day, but I was born around this time of the year. A cold dark person in a cold dark season.

Never expected to live this long.

If you happen to die, I would advise to whomever is responsible for handling dead bodies that, perhaps, you choked to death on your own ego.

Wait, who handles dead bodies again? Is that what Harlequins do?

The first part of my very large comission is done. Ish. It can be done better, and so it will. There are certain requirements to be met. And I'm still going to insist to take a lot of time when working with Rubicund, as redsteel can be unforgiving of mistakes.

I was invited to Lady Joslyn's knighting as a Knight of Bisland, and it was a very nice ceremony. I attended with Lady Viviana and sat with her and Princess Alis. Not quite as formal as an Oathlands ceremony, I think, but that's not necessarily a bad thing - and, as was pointed out at the time - what -is- as formal as an Oathlands ceremony?

It was a celebration. One sorely needed within all this mourning.

I didn't know Dame Zhayla as well as I should have, though we spoke once or twice - there were similarities of stature and our chosen weapons, after all. I knew she was brave, and we had the kinship of being swords, and being knights of the Gold Order together.

I met Lord Killian a few times as well. And I admired him for his role as the paladin of Ideals. He was polite, a bit stiff when I first met him, but I suppose that's to be expected in large crowds. He always stood out as a brave warrior, and I'm honoured to have had the chance to stand - if not beside him, then on the same side in battle.

Both of them will be sorely missed. And I will do what I can to ensure that their light lingers on in our world.

I have spoken to the Keatons about their Aegis line - the line they breed for protection. I believe we've come to a mutual sort of agreement, and I am awaiting the arrival of some of their juveniles to see if one of the dogs and I get along well enough. I've missed Vincere's dogs since they've gone to live with one of his friends. It will be nice to have some furry companionship around the house once more.

Commoners Bulletin V1N3 - 10/28/1007 AR (12/24/2017)

The Commoners Bulletin is a condensed version of the news, happenings, and proclamations given out in the past fortnight! If you have news to include in the bulletin, or you believe I've missed something, please send word! (OOC: Using mail is good!)
-Mae Grayhope, Commoners Council

(OOC note: This usually comes out Sunday night. Due to the holiday, it is coming out late Saturday night/early Sunday morning.)

NEWS:
*In the last bulletin, I wrote about some nobles running down some prodigals at the docks. I have since been informed that these were shavs, serving the pirate king. They were confronted by nobles serving the Iron Guard, and attacked the Guard when questioned. For additional information, please consult the Emergency Bulletin released a few days back ( +bbread state/6 ).

*Attacks by the shav'arani pirate king and the cult that serves him have continued. Many brave men and women gave their lives defending Arx and the Compact, including Dame Zhayla of Old Oak and Lord Killian Ashford. Many more were injured in these attacks. See the Emergency Bulletin for more information.

*House Grayson's archers, known as the Silver Wings, have been drilling endlessly. Some say they might soon be the best archers in all of Arvum!

*Darkness has continued to spread through the waters around Arx, and rumors come of large fish swimming around the bay and up the river. Not that it needs to be said this late in the season, but please don't go swimming.

*Templars have been going around Arx donating their time (and their coin) to help people in need. Fixing a leaky roof is not what I imagine when I think Templar, but I'm happy to hear it's happening!

*Lady Monique formally accepted the challenge from Princess Alis. Master Agnarr will be squaring off against Prince Beaumont, both of the Champions guild. The duel will be happening next week.

*Mirrormasks have been going out across the city spreading the message of the Thirteenth. I much prefer sermons (during day time) and free meals over the strange stuff a few weeks back.

PROCLAMATIONS:

*Lady Eirlys has been named Voice of House Greenmarch. Lady Monique has stepped down as Voice of House Greenmarch.
*Councilor Calaudrin Estrades requested commoners send in topics to discuss in the to-be-scheduled-but-coming-soon Commoners' Council meeting. Please do this! Please send your thoughts to Calaudrin!
*Sir Matthew Stoatingly has chosen his squire from the Thistlefur family, who couldn't be prouder. This is about stoats and stoat things. Not people. A stoat is a sort of cat-snake.
*Baron Silas Whitehawk has married Lady Farrah Amadeo in a private ceremony. I didn't even know they were courting!
*House Deepwood mourns the loss of its Sword, Dame Zhayla, who died fighting deranged cultists sent to wreak havoc in Arx.
*Duchess Nicia Laurent challenged Marquis Fairen Leary, for bad behavior and bullying. Marquis Fairen has yet to respond to the challenge. (OOC note: Fairen's initial response was an OOC misunderstanding. The post has been retracted, and he'll be responding in the next few days.)
*House Ashford mourns the loss of Lord Killian, Paladin of ideals, who died hunting down the deranged cultists that killed Dame Zhayla and others.
*Duchess Margot Tyde announced the birth of her son, who will receive a name only after surviving his first year. Rumor is a very dedicated Harlequin ensured the child was delivered safe and sound, and will further ensure he receives a name.

Relationship Note on Killian

I always knew that Killian would get himself killed.

I've never been particularly safe myself, but Killian even tested _my_ limits. I can recall being actively boggled several times by the fact that _I_ was telling someone to _please maybe not do that ridiculously unsafe thing_. But that was Killian. When he felt there was something that needed doing to help protect others, he just...did it. That was the core of him.

Killian was the person you knew would write back with an immediate and unconditional yes if you ever asked him for help. He stood with me at one of the hardest fights I've ever faced, and that connection between us never faded, no matter anything else that happened.

I'll miss you, you big, brave idiot.

Relationship Note on Alis

When I first saw the princess, she was rallying in defense of her brother. I thought her a bit intimidating if perhaps a bit rigid in service of propriety. To know her just a bit better now and see that there is a balance of humor and troublemaking leaves me utterly delighted. I do hope to enjoy more time in Princess Alis' company. I must remember to look into this book club idea of hers, both for the mischief and possibly seeing if it would be a way to increase the general knowledge of lore and wisdom through popularizing the hobby.

Relationship Note on Killian

I have never fought with Killian. From the memory of others, I know him to be a skilled and capable warrior. He was one of the Paladins who stood between Arx and Tolamar Brand, and so I know he could fight. And was willing to put himself between Arx and what would destroy us.

But the Killian I knew was a man who sought answers. He dreamed big, but he dreamed of what was, what could be. He was special. And new. A soul spun by the Queen of Endings, newly sent to life for the first time. It was his first turn on the Wheel, if vision and Faith are true. He did not fade into obscurity. I am sure She welcomed him home with open arms, and perhaps one day he will return.

Relationship Note on Zhayla

How do I start this?

I said a lot of it at the funeral. How Zhayla was my friend. How she was funny, and warm, and fierce, and dorky. How she wanted to be a hero. How she wanted to help people.

How she wished that there existed a possibility for her father to be redeemed, but how she refused to bend the knee to him or offer him forgiveness. How she went to her death defiant against the Abyss. A hero. Like she always wanted.

She came to me before a recent trip to Stormward. She was worried about going back to the Isles, but at the same time, she couldn't even consider the possibility of _not_ going. There were people to help, after all. And that's probably the purest sense of _Zhayla_ I can offer. She put others before herself, every single time.

I'll miss her every single day for the rest of my life.

I knew Dame Zhayla and Lord Killian, neither as well as I should have.

Talked to Zhayla a time or two. Bled in the forests beside Killian, under his command.

Meant to know them both better. Should have.

But if I talk should have, should have had more time to do it. Should have been both of them lived long and died old and peaceful. There's a world we should have and a world we got, with some distance between them.

Might be the two of them made it a bit less. All you can ask from anyone.

I have written on this subject before, but changing times condemn such things to the dusty corners of memories lost, all too often. Thus, I repeat myself:

When facing a battle at sea, a warrior should wear the finest armor they own. There are ignorant mainlanders who will cry such foolishness as "Rust," or "But you'll sink," and I will answer such idiocy next. When oiled and well kept, steel maile and plate have been the favored harness of Grimhall warriors for over a thousand years. Whether fighting on a ship's deck or wading ashore for battle or raid, the value of steel armor is well worth the work of maintaining the metal.

To those who wail about drowning in steel, hear this: in battle, a body in the water is already dead. The warrior who is struck a deathblow and topples into the sea does not care whether he sinks. Yes, a clumsy man in steel will drown, as will the man in leathers, and the majority of men wearing nothing. Far better to be a warrior with death in his eyes and steel on his shoulders who wins the battle, rather than being the timid soul with fear in his heart, preparing for defeat before blows are ever struck.

For some, they are at their best in lighter armor, and to those I say fight on. A warrior should face battle at sea in their best harness, whether that be leathers, steel, or rubicund. Let skill and wealth, not fear dictate your armor.

Such is the way of war on the water.

Though if no fighting is at hand and a storm looms, take off your damned armor, whatever it's made of.
