Relationship Note on Thesarin

I am unsure if the people will forgive us for not dealing with a threat for fear they are becoming a threat. And we must remember that this is not theory, even if it appears so to those of us in Arx. Now, somewhere, the death continues. Our caravans, our roads, our holdings will be attacked and raided by the more aggressive tribes, by tribes who are hungry or desperate, by free tribes, by tribes under the sway of our enemy, by tribes who just happened to migrate in the wrong direction and who either themselves chose violence or faced understandable reaction from the local citizens. Not all who attack are evil, and many reasons are understandable, but does does not mean it is not happening.

To choose to do nothing therefore is not a neutral or good stance, but it is to say the current death must continue, on both sides. It may well be the lesser of evils, I do not think so, but it is an argument to be made. And yes, what I propose does mean conflict as well - just as we have conflict now. Some will resist such moves, some will die. Though it will perhaps be more an open and free choice than previous, and it will be levies and those who have chosen to fight on our side who will take that cost, and not our husbands, wives, daughters and sons who sit at home, where we have promised them safety. Nor those simply travelling the roads to visit the sites of the Gods.

I am certain there are other solutions, and many may indeed be better. I am not Father Aureth, I am not Mother Ailith, I am not Most Holy Orazio. I am a simple priest and warrior of the Faith, my answers are incomplete. But they are solutions. And the ones you will get should you leave the matters to me and men like me. I would encourage you to find better answers - I would encourage all to.

I bang that drum often enough, yes.

But some things are enough to stand out, even past that.

I think our anonymous benefactor has expressed a wish that the things they purchased remain in the Laurent household, so Great-Aunt Aida will be returning from whence she came. I think Cris is still trying to offload her though. It's a creepy painting.

I appreciate the clarification, for I confess I noted your earlier reflection and had been pondering my own response to it. Not all beyond the Compact worship spirits, and this is a misconception I deal with quite often as one who holds the Pantheon in her heart. And ever has. I respect the power of spirits and find no quarrel with those who venerate them, but that has never been my path. I learned of Gloria on my grandfather's knee, and I'm not the only prodigal who has such a tale.

Also, I would never pray to Gloria for victory. Perhaps some do, and I'll not quarrel wit them, either, but that also isn't me. I pray for the courage to ride into a battle where the odds are against me. I pray for the resolve to put the lives of my comrades or my cause ahead of my own blood, if it comes to it. And I pray that I conduct myself with honor, as much as a warrior in the thick of battle can. I pray for the virtues which I often lack. I figure I and my commanders have to take care of the victory part ourselves.

In the study of pragmatic reasoning there is (one) how the meaning can depend on the context of use, and (two) the contrast between what is said and what is communicated. The rest is semantics. Facial expressions, body language, and proxemics all provide meaningful content.

Without war, what would the fighters and sword-smiths do?

I believe, were there no war in this world, all those fighters would have to dance, and all the sword-smiths would have to turn their hammers to making roses of steel.

We'd live in a world where matters were settled by foot races and decided by the most clever poem. Where the most beautiful and moving painting would win the day. Where those that dealt death would instead turn their talents to climbing and jumping and swimming.

What a world that would be.

I've said it a few times myself, but listen to what this man says, there.

The Horned One has been casting his shadow over the lands I grew up in since long before I was born. He's been killing and enslaving the people there all that time. Now he's coming south, and he's bringing his armies with him.

Where do they come from? Where do you come from? They all had mothers and fathers before he stole their names and their lives away.

It does my heart very good to have my Count, my War Chief, and one of my oldest friends back among us at Heron Hall. Thesarin's strength and resolve have ever been a guiding force for my tribe - and now the Rivens - and they will be more needed than ever in the days to come, I think.

Relationship Note on Thesarin

One of the vassals of my House, I've come to understand him as a rather blunt individual. There is little room for beating around the bush and more often than not he could be considered a little rough around the edges. He reminds me of some others that I know and have come to trust the judgment of purely because they will speak their mind, when it needs to be spoken. The fact that he makes his delivery of speaking his mind in a humorous manner only tends to lighten the blow of what he may have to say.

My liege and a man I am proud to call friend. Ever since before knee hit ground he had my respect, and when he put his people first by taking the Riven name it made that regard for him even greater. He looks after his own, and honors his word.

Relationship Note on Thesarin

My life has been bound up with Thesarin's for so long I cannot remember a time when it was not. My tribesman of the Greenwoods. My leader, when the tribe was broken, and I had to find another path. My count, and I his knight, when we became this thing they call prodigal. My duty to him and his gives my life form and function, even when all else seems dark. He shall have my sword and my blood so long as I live.
