I went today to look upon the great clock tower that now stands in Heroes Home. I thought beholding it with my own eyes might allow it to make more sense to me, but it does not. Still, it is a marvel to behold, and my ears feel something special when it chimes on the hour. What does it portend? I know not. But it reminds me that part of living in an age of great change is wondrous things, as well as horrible ones.

I don't think I say this enough. I am incredibly proud of my family. Every single person involved in House Malvici and its extended Vassals is hard working and determined. Family dinners always remind be just how lucky I am to have a family as strong as this one.

I found an interesting little place up in the Redrain Ward. I met several new people, ran into some I've met before. Lots of painting happening, shirtless it seems as well seems to be a very great idea for painting.

I was the opening of Mistress Valery's gardens up in the Redrain ward. There was a ceremony that I don't rightly understand but I am sure was fine and good to please such spirits as hang around up north. It was all very lovely, as is the garden. I played a little music and everything. I also asked Mistress Valery to teach me a little of gardening, as I ought to do some.
It is not real gardening, but I should pull up some weeds and water some plots and such. I've been trying, but I think some of my plants aren't doing too well. I've a garden, I've never really done much there. It's just some flowers and herbs, but I'd like to keep them alive until my woman comes back, she's always the one who tends to it.

Oh, oh! I have answers for this. I use different ones based on mood of course.
1) So that nobody sees me coming before I flail them in the face for insulting my big brother.
2) They had so many kids they just started to run out of height for them.
3) It took less height to make me perfect. (I often use this one after he's done something endangering enough to himself that I am compelled to throw shoes).

What is there to say about Count Keaton? Only that he's the most trustworthy and loyal vassal that a person could hope to have. But beyond that, he's an excellent friend as well. When I first met him and his wife when they arrived in Arx, I didn't expect to develop have the relationship that we have. It feels good. To the future!

Being the Sword of Blancbier is the greatest honour that has ever been bestowed upon me. It was my dream since I was a child to one day take over for my father. It became my life when Wyrmstooth was placed in my hands by the Marquessa.
And then...
And then I was faced with the possibility of having to give it up. And I struggled with that. For a long time. I talked to Lady Clover and Lord Reiker. In the end, I came to have a peace with the idea that I might one day not be the Sword of Blancbier, and watch someone else hold the title.
And I spent some time deciding who I was going to be if that happened. I spent some time divorcing my identity from my duty.
Whatever else happens, I am glad I did that. Glad I explored being something more. Glad I looked into what I can fill my life with in the absence of the greatness of Wyrmstooth and the awe-inspiring responsibilities she brings.
But also?
I find that I take joy in being the Sword of Blancbier. And knowing once more that for the foreseeable future, I will hold her?
It is my place. It is where I am home. And I hope that my duty to her and House Wyrmguard will be exemplary.

I knew something was wrong, but I didn't pursue. I wanted to give her time and space. I wanted to be good.
But I knew something was wrong. The way things went when we were with others. The way she was unhappy.
Perhaps she is right and this is for the best.
Perhaps those who warned me were right.
I will grieve.
And I'll always love her.

I've been spending time with some of the new recruits, and their skills and potential range dramatically. All of them for the most part seem to appreciate the opportunity of the guard, but it is difficult to tell how many seek greater stability and how many care about the profession for the sake of what it stands for and does. There are an unfortunate minority that cower in weapons practice, not handling the threat of violence well. I don't have high hopes for them being proper guardsmen, though perhaps we can find other roles for them as iron messengers or cooks.

Relationship Note on Nicia
Several weeks ago my wife took charge of House Laurent's involvement with the Kennex relief efforts. This was accomplished through contacting the appropriate people and then choosing which resources of ours were to be committed and all the other finer details. The results so far seem to be largely positive and I'm glad to have such a capable partner in running the duchy.

Met the King today. He seems to have the needs of the people in his heart. Still, politicians got to do their politics, and that's more than fair. It's right. I hope the right political move is also the right move for the people.
