Relationship Note on Sina

I am fortunate to have found the perfect location and the perfect cohost for the Storybook Soiree, all in the space of one meeting. The ideas that the Archscholar came up with off the top of her head more than prove she will help make this party a glittering success.

Have I really been here for nearly a year? How has the time gone by so quickly?

I can still remember that first day arriving with the intention to rest for a time, and already the days have become months, and the months have multiplied faster than the rabbits.

I can't think of anything more to write, except to wait for those commissions to complete. I have hopes of securing the commission for the ink tomorrow, but that is the one that worries me the most. How can I possibly tell if /ink/ is of exceptional quality? It's /ink/. One uses it to write, and that's all there is to it! I think I need to get away from this paper before my head splits over thinking on it.

Stepping into the light of new and glorious opportunities, and all shall know it by the oleander pinned to my lapel. It only seems like an appropriate way to praise my new patron.

Don't rightly know where's time gone running. Seems like a breath ago it was spring. Now, here we are headed in a sweep toward autumn, and I'm finally starting to feel like I might be fitting --

Aw, no, nevermind that. That's too sentimental.

Suffice to say that I feel like drinking less whiskey when I think about all my responsibilities these days.

I completed my very first commission this week for Lady Kenna. I had a bunch of stuff laying around so I just kept adding more and more to it. She seemed happy.

After 6 weeks away from Arx I have come to one conclusion...

Arx is home.

I belong here.

That is due mostly to the people who live here.

Thank you.

I had a dream the other night.

I walked into a soldier’s camp somewhere I’ve never been before, I couldn’t recognize the location and it seemed dark all around me. The sentries had fallen asleep, the fat soldiers in drunken stupor as they laid about, as I walked right through the camp until I reached the center where the fire was extinguished, ignored. The racks of trophies were empty, a few weapons rusted on the racks. I noticed that all the plants had perished to ash, there was no water. I saw strange flakes what appeared to be ash floating around the air I breathed and I coughed, stumbling back, reaching to put my hand on the shoulder of one sleeping sentry but as I touched them, they crumbled to ash and dust too. More of that ashy flake floated in the air, and I struggled to breath.

Then I saw her.

A knight in the most beautiful of armor with a sword of burning golden light stood at the ordinary extinguished camp fire. Behind her were lions that seemed to be golden, with great wings of light, pulling a great golden chariot of fire. She looked at me and I felt a heavy heat as light shined impossibly bright, blinding I had to squint and I heard a voice that called saying something about the ends never justify the means, that honor was armor that can withstand the harshest of challenges but can be destroyed by the simplest of selfish acts to bring dishonor. That stories of bravery, courage, chivalry and honor inspire each of us, even the smallest, to strive to be better and stronger in our little moments of struggle and temptation. That we should remember those stories and strive to emulate them. If only I had my journal there in my dream to write what she said.

I opened my eyes, and the world seemed normal. The camp fire was blazing brightly and hot, the trophies of war shined brilliantly, the weapons of heroes lined up in honor and thanks to Gloria as they overcame their ordeals.

When I woke, I had a burst of inspiration as I saw the golden sun shine bright through the window of my chambers. To have artists throughout the capital create masterpieces. Of armaments, weapons, paintings, tapestries and more. Trophies that have tales which inspire. To praise and give thanks to Gloria, not for allowing them to win, but strengthening their resolve in trying times and to be lions of the Faith that never retreat. To have a shrine cleansed, rebuilt and rededicated to her.

Tales and stories of honorable combat, of warriors that stared unflinchingly into overwhelming odds and didn’t skirt their duty. Of chivalric codes that emphasize generosity in victory, piety, braver and martial skills. To have the strength to wield arms against foes in a violent time, but the internal fortitude to withhold from cruelty. To maintain the Faith and serve with valor and faithfulness. To protect those who cannot protect themselves. To give willingly what they have to those less fortunate. To refrain from causing unneeded harm. To fight for the good and welfare of all. To fight fair rather than allowing the ends to justify the means. To never refuse a challenge, nor turn their back to a foe.

Dreams can be funny things, dangerous even, when they desire you to act instead of sitting back.

I contend it foolhardy to take an Archlector's staff for a great many reasons. Of course, being in a position for the Archlector in question to have an impressive new staff to smack ne'er-do-wells on the knuckles or over the head makes up for it.

A question arose at the spirits tasting the other day about which of the great houses can hold their liquor better.

Opinions varied widely on which houses people thought were the most formidable when it came to drinking. Sadly, we did not come to a consensus. Though, to be true, a couple of our guest's stamina and immunity to some of our more intoxicating beverages was truly outstanding.

I think this is a question that bears deeper exploration.

With that in mind, I do believe Lord Martino and I shall have to conspire with some of our good friends from various Houses of Avrum to host a contest to see which House is truly the greatest.

A team event perhaps. Each house providing a team of their very best to set this ongoing question to rest. For at least the year.

Your endless creativity is a source of wonder and delight for me. I adore working with numbers and that is where my talents lie, but alas, they do not create anything as pleasing to the senses as your work. Thank you for joining me for dinner. I hope I can view more of your exquisite jewellery and gowns next time we meet. And of course, exchange many more words! It is always a pleasure.

A word of advice: if you're going to hire thieves to do a job for you, at least have the self respect to hire ones that haven't already been caught at it.

I hope you didn't pay them in advance.

I look back fondly on the day I asked him to serve as my Voice. I, ready made with all the political rhetoric. He just looked at me and said, “You need someone to remind the Compact how fucking nice you’re being”.

He said so grimly with a scowl, and then chortled before accepting. That was the day he and I came to understand each other perfectly. I should have expected as much however, the man fashioned goblets from skulls to drink his mead.

I needed someone to represent the cold, the ruthless, the brutality of life within the Mourning Isles. He did exactly that and even more than I could have asked. Loyalty while standing before an endless barrage.

There are many words I’m saving for the day we reunite in the shadow lands.

Book,

It is never pleasing to have to take life, but as a Warlord and as a man who has seen war from virtually every angle it is very often a necessity. I sit in thought this evening about life and how fragile it is. I am reminded that our causes are noble, that our way of life as a society is evolving and becoming that which it should be, even if dark blots still stain our path. I caution those who may be given in to bloodlust to remember that each life, friend or foe has value and can be learned from.

I encourage civility to be the first response that anyone may offer in conflict, but I readily admit that should you be attacked by a force that would see you or your way destroyed that you end it with a show of force exceeding what anyone might expect.

Violence isn't always the answer, but when violence is the answer, it is the only answer.

When I first came to Arx, I was awestruck. I'd never seen such a big city, of course. The market is second-to-none, the streets themselves are wonderful, and I can of course turn more coin here for my work than I'd ever been able to in Oakhaven. I found that it suits me, being here, and thought it unlikely that there was anywhere better.

And then I visited Ostria. I've never seen anywhere so beautiful in all my life. The gardens and pools, the pavers and shrines, it's all lovely and curious, spread out above the sea. Too hot by far, but people are clever about the heat. If I know nothing else about my future, it's that I'll be back again.
