Relationship Note on Mia

I saw you'd wrote me to the Whites when we returned. Set down to endure for all time in the rolls, for any who'd seek it out.
I'll answer you the same way, then, and as things are it seems foolish to be aught but honest.

That you love me has been my greatest gift these years, and most days I ain't a notion how it came to be. At my worst I were awful, and at my best I ain't, I know, much better.

I've tried, and that's all I could say. For you, and for ours, I've tried so fucking hard.

It's been a time since I set down to paper in these Journals. Never was my way in truth, though I made my attempts.

I go out to another battle; so's been much of my life, for I chose to spend it wading through a river of red. This to save the lands of the Grey Forests, of my people, or at least see them safe away if such might be done. I ain't wrote on them and neither will I like on this. If I fall today, then keep my Blacks closed to the end of time;y thoughts are my own. If there's anything of me worth carrying on, it's my people, my family, and my children. I hope I'll see them soon.

But if this to be is the last word spoke or writ by or of Marquis-Consort Thesarin Riven, War Chief to the Twainfort, son of Vahari, last chief of the Greenwood tribe, let it be this:

That the Rangers of the East held their cause to the last.
That he the faith given him by the riverlanders making welcome to a stranger, them from every corner from the Forests to the Isles who he promised protection, and those of the Greenwoods who walked out from the woods with him to the unknown, was never broken.

Or failing that:
Come the second Breaking of the World, he never Abandoned his people.

It's a truth the oaths between the Compact and the Abandoned were broken.

They broke when the lords fled their lands to seek shelter in the great stone walls of Arx, and left them they'd sworn protection to face the Breaking of the World.

I knew the girl all her life; her grand-father were a second father to me. Most of what I know he taught me; most of what I've learned he tried.

We fought together at some of the worst of times, from the walls of Arx to the beaches at Stormwall.

I lead her far as I could, until she found she'd another path to follow.

Until we meet again, on the solid earth, or past the end of all rivers.

House Riven would recognize, and give thanks, to

Prince Tyrus Thrax
Marquessa Lora DiFidante
Lord Ian Kennex
Sir Amund
Mirella Fiorelli

for their good friendship and good works at rooting out and putting to torch an Abandoned clan that has scourged the Mother's March for generations.

Their unclean land and vile religion are undone, for the benefit of all peoples of Arvum.

It's a fool of a sheep mistakes a shepherd for a friend.

Reckon they realize it, at the last.

Relationship Note on Preston

When I'd attack in the snows, back in the day, I planned on eating from the stores of them I moved against.

An awful risk. If it fails, it leaves yours broken, demoralized, and stranded in the cold, with a hard work at salvage.

Twenty years gone, I rode from the woods to bargain passage through a land of burned fields and mass graves.

Now that land's been made a March.

Kin in Honor we stand.

I've heard it said in the Compact, folk ain't should give an order they'd not follow. I heard the same in the woods. It's sound and true.

Most folk in Arx, though, seem to see it only in wrongs and rights. Which it is, ain't doubt. But more, it's good sense.

If you ain't would follow a command, it's like the one you're commanding feels the same. If you give a command ain't followed, it's more like every command to come seems less the way thing'll be, more a kind suggestion.

One or two ain't listen, you can shout 'em in line, slap 'em down, or make of 'em example to the rest. But if they all get the notion they can do how they like, it leaves the commander a lonely fool in a fancy shirt. Why armies break all at once, whole lines melting like snow in rain. More'n once I've seen a broken army with a leader shouting at the crowd to fall in line, as much use if they'd been ordering skies to rain or snows to melt. If them you're commanding ain't think you're in charge, they're right.

Way of the world.

A few winters come, you'll struggle remembering how it ever seemed clever to seek out sharp metal set at you in anger.

And with an ever-flowing tide of young folk to remind you how you'd been a time.

Folk have been saying it, but it ain't going to be less true, that no one can speak of shavs as one people.

There's a thousand thousand Abandoned peoples all across Arvum, and the only truth to them is they ain't part of the Compact. A shav people might live in a castle with vassals paying tribute or might sleep in the mud with nothing they ain't wearing on their backs. Ride out from the forts and the roads, more'n a day or two, you'll find folk who can be Compact citizens when Solace or nobles ride through and become shavs trading with their neighbors when an Abandoned party comes close.

Folk where I'm from, we ain't had much trade in books. Paper fouls and rots too fast in the weather to put much stock in, when you ain't got great houses of stone and plaster for holding it.

We kept our histories in the songs of our people, and the Marks on our skin.

A fine festival by the heads of Grayson and its Duchies.

Ain't much for merry-making, but the children were glad for the celebration.

Folk told me us in the woods wasn't civilized, and folk in the towns was.

So civilization seemed to mean every way folk without enough to do worked out how to make easy things hard.

But if we in Greenwood and Greenblood were civilised, then now I'm only more confused.

Can't say folk in the woods was less minded to manners than in Civilization, how I remember it.

Not so many rules about it, be sure. But Civilized folk can give more offense without worry they'll be opened nave to chops.

That the Compact holds one Abandoned people the same as the next, oftener than not, ain't escaped the knowing of raiders, neither.

That a clever bastard could ride home with spoils while the Compact took their vengeance on whatever tribe was closest. Take all they could carry and let their enemies suffer for it.
