Relationship Note on Anze

To the people of Arx:

I am but a Knight of Solace. I am not the Archlector of Gild nor a Seraph, nor even Godsworn, but I have dedicated the past seven years of my life to honoring Gild's message. I recite, as do all my fellow Knights, the oath we have all taken regularly:

We of the Knights of Solace are as much travelers as the pilgrims that we guard. The goddess Gild lights our path, and we journey as directed. We travel roads that lead to the wounded and defenseless, crying out for succor. We travel roads that lead to the destitute, in need of Gild's charity. We travel every road and every path in need of guardians to push back the darkness of Arvum's wild places, and bring prosperity to the Compact. We are travelers on roads without end.

It was with those words in mind that I went to the Shrine of Gild to seek out Prince Anze Redrain.

When I found the prince, I did not find a trace of ego. I did not find a man scorned. Likewise, I did not find a man weeping and lamenting his lot in life. There was nothing to Anze that I could find besides his dignified remorse and his commitment to the Compact. Through our conversation, where I took it upon myself to begin his lessons on the goddess Gild, I could see so clearly that this was a man who was dedicated to fixing the mistake he made. A man that is dedicated to the Compact, to Arx, and to Avrum.

I realize damage that is done cannot be truly undone. I realize the damage done is vast. But to any and all who wish to know of Prince Anze Redrain, know that we have a good man who means to do all he might to aid each and every one of us. While Prince Darren has ordered a year of Prince Anze's time, I have no doubt in my heart the Compact will receive a lifetime of it. This man is a traveler on roads without end.

While I write thoughtful words, I will also beg any and all that read this to consider the Tale of Prince Anze. Consider your words strongly before you write them. Speak them to the Gods, to the Spirits, to your friends, before you commit them to paper.

For all the horror that has befallen us, and for all the horror more that is yet to come -- and it /will/ come -- I take comfort in knowing that we have all been gifted an opportunity to grow stronger and evolve for the better, even though the conditions are agonizing and, in many respects, downright terrifying. I have faith in blessed Lagoma, Our Lady of Change, and in humanity to accept Her gift and put it to good use, to rise to the challenge to be the best versions of ourselves, so that we may inspire and empower others to likewise be so.

In recognizing our shortcomings, in being merciless in our assessment and then compassionate in our collective striving to do better and be better, we shall embody the virtues of the Gods, those noble ideals to which we all should aspire. We shall become the Bright Reflection that will set ourselves, the Compact, and the entirety of the world aglow with the healing warmth and light of blessed Lagoma.

May the Gods bless and keep us, and may we honor Them by better caring for ourselves and each other.

Relationship Note on Max

While I am praising people for actions worthy of the rank they hold, allow me to draw attention to the actions of Count Maximilian Darkwater. Again, not a man who I have had much personal interaction with, but I cannot help but be impressed by the steps he has taken towards addressing the systemic injustices in his demesne. I have, and can have, nothing but praise for his recent proclamation regarding the abolition of hereditary sentences of thralldom in his County. The concept that a child must serve out a parent's sentence is contrary to the justice of the Sentinel, and it speaks of great character and courage on the part of Count Maximilian that he would recognize this, and more, do something about it, even though it will, inevitably, have negative consequences in the short term.

In the long term, I have every confidence that the gods will smile upon the just.

Relationship Note on Anze

I should make it clear that I have rarely, if ever, met Prince Anze Redrain. I must also acknowledge that the apology issued by him recently is, I believe, mandated by his liege lord.

However, it is an apology worthy of a Prince. It does, perhaps, take a little too much of the responsibility for the incident - Prince Anze was hardly the only person to offer insult or a lack of hospitality, and had there not been a history of such behavior, I suspect that other solutions for the inciting incident could have been offered. It would be a shame if he becomes the whipping boy for the actions of the Regent Council and those whose unacknowledged and unaddressed disrespect encouraged his own.

That said - as amusing as it might be considering current political circumstances - based on this, I can only offer respect for Prince Anze's grace and integrity in accepting his mistake and its consequence. I am looking forward to his service with the Archlector of Gild, should it come to pass.

That look - yes - that paused look where you forgot to blink, to breathe, to move.

Another word to reply and there was movement again, motion, and the drink and the conversation and it all resolved around us. Endings and Beginnings. Maybe I should --

The same and different.

A pastel sketch. An aggressively bright-lit, friendly pastel sketch of kittens frolicking through high grass and drooping flowers. A couple of the kittens are on their backs, batting at low-hanging flowers. The edges are all a bit hard and sharp, though, as if drawn and overdrawn. At the base of the sketch, in looping, prettily written text (if still a bit heavily-pressed, easy on the ink there), "Caution and control doesn't mean inaction." A few little flowers are inked in on the end of the text. How nice, it's all very nice.

Relationship Note on Ianthe

I woke this morning from fitful sleep and began to read the reports of my Scholars that had came in overnight. Among them I see claim that one I have met previously, though not spoken to in a long while, has been proclaimed by groups of Shav'arvani as Princess Ianthe Mairin. I have some concerns over this situation - not Ianthe, for she seemed ernest and sweet enough when I met her.

House Mairin did not join the compact when King Alar Grayson formed it. This is the basis of why House Thrax is the High House of the Isles today. Seeing that Mairin, their liege, was not going to join the Compact and knowing that without such a treaty in place they would be lost to the Reckoning, House Thrax waged a brutal and bloody war on House Mairin that resulted in the supposed destruction of all of Mairin. Thrax then bent knee and join Alar's Compact. I am not surprised that someone, or several someones, of the Mairin line survived the ordeal and the line continued. This is a theme we see throughout history (Velenosa being an example of one that has used that to their advantage).

From a strictly legal standpoint though, according to the historical knowledge left to us, Mairin never entered the Compact. So any Shav'arvani coming to swear their fealty to a scion of House Mairin are still Shav'arvani and not Prodigals. Many were the Houses left out of the Compact during those dark days. This is, in fact, why we call them Shav'arvani: abandoned. But remembering that one was of noble or royal blood a thousand years ago does not suddenly make one a noble of the Compact now.

I have some hope that this will be one of the more peaceful puzzles I get to mull over this year.

Relationship Note on Natalia

As Her Royal Highness Natalia Grayson has confirmed in her latest White Journal entry, I have the obligation to announce that our courtship has been ended on mutual agreement. I am quite saddened that she has chosen to word me as she did, and I would like to apologize to her for any anger the way we ended our terms might have brought to Her Royal Highness. I fear that it was not meant to be and I am confident that she will have the luck to finding someone who will be much better than I, much more qualified than I, and that will know how to appreciate the many gifts she has more than I did. Sometimes these matters don't work, unfortunately.

Gallantly, and like the noble person I am, I also open my door to her should she ever need my help in the future, though I politely request that she gives us some time to heal the wounds that rupture can bring. I am not a resentful man; everything that comes out of my mouth is nothing but truth.

I ought to speak (or write) plainly: I spent the last year drowning and sequestered in Valardin Manor, and yes, it's about the least impressive thing I've ever done with myself.

I've always, as most siblings do I suppose, stood in awe of my older siblings. Lark's diligence; Barric's valor; everything of them is good and rightous. The best I could do was marry that. But it's time I embrace the messages the world has been sending me. I can do more for my family than wed.

I'm no steel blade and no sharp strategist, but I can listen and learn as my House makes plans to deal with the Bringers. I'm sure I can find some way to help. I ought to. I'm Grayson blood in a white dragon.
