The very position that all lives are sacred and equal is one that makes any act of slavery inexcusable.

Willow your quote speaks to the very actions of my whole life.

One of the more interesting events I've witnessed in the City. Also it reminds me just how... raw the people here are. Most of them couldn't win a single hand of Poker if they had to hide their true feelings on a subject. Every public forum seems to require castigation and indignation. But that's not the interesting thing. Writs... another tool of those who we should learn from. We've forgotten so many things, even terms like Invoking. And still we spend time blathering rather than asking questions. I wonder if I would have the strength to resist using them if I had such skills or power. I wonder if they allow those who leave their lands to be relieved of their writs. To me it seems no different than the oaths one takes when they bend the knee to the compact. We had the choice to die at the hands of the Horned one or to join the Compact. We gave up some freedom for life. How different is Platinum's offer. No doubt it IS different but if I had that power could I resist? Are writs the problem or is it Platinum the problem.

If we had a rule of law that guided how Writs could be used, rather than it fall to the judgment of one m...well being. Would it be better? It seems to me like it would. But then I suspect it's a good thing that I am not someone with such powers. I wonder if Skald distinguishes a writ freely given and accepted. Just like a promise made to one's betrothed, as he does a Writ forced at knife point. It seems like accepting a Writ is a Choice. But Forcing one is what breaks it. Even Skald accepts the cost if he refuses to obey the Laws of the Dreamer. It's certainly a fascinating philosophical experiment... I should ask others but they'll probably haul me in front of the Inquisition. Wouldn't that be ironic...

I strongly encourage any artisan to take the lessons of Myrinda Grayhope when it comes to customers of any kind who give you lip or treat you with less than the respect you deserve.

If they are unworthy of your art, deny it to them. Your clientele is entitled to nothing of you that you do not choose to give. If this makes it hard for you to have bread

You died at home,
in your own warm bedroom,
the old-fashioned death of a Lowers woman in labor,
who tries to close herself again
but cannot.

The ancient darkness to which you also gave birth
returns to your bedchamber,
and enters.

I begin my week within the Shrine of the Thirteenth. While it is certainly not the first time I visit, it will be the first time I've spent quite so much time within its mirrored walls. It should prove an insightful experience. Whether about myself, its keepers or its visitors, remains to be seen.

Relationship Note on Arcadia

Planned to kill someone unarmed and weaker than him?

Even if the claim you make of the spear being gone for were true, you yourself wrote specifically to comment on a heated disagreement in the moment, which would suggest an impulse borne of momentary passion, and certainly the exact /opposite/ of planning.

About lives? Yes, all of them matter equally, slave, slaver, commoner, noble, poet, knight, they are all lives and all sacred. Does that excuse slavery? No. Does that disregard the suffering of those enslaved? I would also say no - in fact, the very position that all lives are sacred and equal is one that makes any act of slavery inexcusable.

We decided that we would stand on our own. That we would reject the aid offered by both the Undying Empire and by Cardia. That we would prepare ourselves to fight our own battles, knowing that this would be difficult, and knowing that once this decision was made, they would be unable to help us. After all, as Emissary Zulana made it particularly clear last night that if they did help us? That would be a violation of the agreement that we had made.

That would mean we had essentially allied ourselves with one side or the other.

That would mean war.

In order to remain neutral, we must rebuff any offer from either side and continue to strike forward on our own path, or else we will find ourselves in the position of both being indebted to one side and antagonizing the other. I am not sure why this is such a difficult concept for so many to understand, but independence means independence. We made a difficult decision, but now that we have made it, let's not immediately undermine it the first chance we get.

I do hope that everyone who spoke considered the effects your words might have on the Emissary from the Undying Empire. I hope that each and every one of you considered the weight of the information that was going out, the nature of who was listening to it, and what that might mean. I hope that all of you are ready to deal with the consequences for everything which you have said.

Somehow, I suspect you haven't, and I suspect you aren't. There is a certain inevitability to a few paths of our future, but the speed at which those happen has just been rapidly increased.

Do not underestimate them.

Kritr has abdicated and left Clearlake in my hands. I only hope that I will do the family proud with things. I have a few things in the works, but I'm going to take it at a steady pace so that we don't fall into a tangle of too many things. May the Spirits and Gods guide my actions and show me when I'm being too selfish with things if that should happen. I owe them both thanks for my former Baron having the faith to leave me with the Barony and it's future.

Decorum, how does it work?

Firstly, the primary purpose of a question is not to score a point against the person you're addressing in most situations. Show them all due respect and consideration while making your (hopefully concise) inquiry in accordance with any formalities expected, such as waiting your turn. Comport yourself with some dignity, even if you find their opinions repugnant and their replies not to your liking. You needn't pitifully lavish anyone with empty flattery for the privilege either, just be civil and mannered. If they don't reciprocate, disengage.

If emotions run too high, excuse yourself from the discussion. Try not to shout wild accusations or insults before running from the vicinity, attempt to loudly judge or blame the other person for something not in their control, stroke the pommel of your sword menacingly, sigh disdainfully or mutter invective, take an overtly aggressive posture towards them, or interrupt the conversation with a cry of outrage or an appeal to the crowd for support. If you have been personally insulted somehow, calmly demand apology or satisfaction in a proper duel if the slight is a severe one.

And there you are, by following these simple suggestions you too may become decorous and others may better enjoy your company! How keen.

You hear rumors of customers that negotiate for better prices, but there's a difference between that and taking advantage of artists and their generosity. Fortunately, for the most part I've had very little trouble with this, though now and then a client will tell me I'm charging too much and they will take their work elsewhere, looking confounded when I wish them well on the way out the door.

It is my Jayus-given right to follow my inspiration, and if you don't inspire me, I'm less likely to create for you. Kindness, compassion, patience, understanding, these things can inspire me. I will still do great work for the brusque and the professional, and still be inspired by them. But rudeness, cruelty, disrespect, none of those things make me want to work with you.

Put plainly: don't do this. Noble or commoner, don't do this. Pay what we're worth, and we are worth the effort and the time. My days as Guildmaster are numbered but if you rouse the ire of enough of us, we are a force when we work together. We have proved this again and again in times of crisis, and we support each other in our efforts to create and earn a living. We also -discuss- these things, clients who continue to attempt to pit us against each other, suggest they can find better prices not because they want to take their business elsewhere, but because they want us to submit to the demands that are being made of us.

We remember and we talk about it with each other. Please, treat us well and encourage others to do the same. We as artists pour more of ourselves into the smallest bit of work than most would know, we carry with a tradition that borders on holy to some and beyond to many.

Theoretically, the troubles around Artshall should be behind us, now. Now it's on to find Commander Avariye, and a few other matters. Hopefully things settle down elsewhere as well.
