The unknown gentleman
Who used to sit outside our manor every day
Is missing without mention in any White.

Nameless,
Defying all
He has left his story unfinished.

I'm looking forward to the masquerade ball next week. Drake made some veryhelpful suggestions regarding my costume. Now all that remains to be seen is if I will have a date or be going alone

The twins miss their father, but the baby isn't old enough to really miss him yet. They are adjusting, and will be very happy to see him when he returns. Which, gods willing, will be soon.

In the meantime, we continue to do what is necessary, holding to the light and caring about our people - family, friends, and those we have responsibility for. As we should.

Summer has long meant time out of doors for me. The winters are just a chance to get plans together. So it should be no surprise to anyone that I've spent more time cataloging the Gray Forest of late than I have tending to anything at Ashford. That's not entirely true - I've made Bethany come with me so she can answer all the messengers and send back samples to be grown at home. So it's not wasted time by any means.

Busy days make for busy nights.
I've been so busy these days, preparing for the ball. Learning the ins and outs of the market and the goods within and without the Compact. I feel like I barely have time to rest and beat the mid-day heat before I'm off again and meeting nobles and royals. Not that I'm complaining as almost to a one they have all been at least kind enough to talk to me. To give me advice. Even if it's not always great advice the fact they've gone out of their way to tell me has done my heart wonders. I barely have time to think of life back in Tor. I've met the cousin of Lady Kaia, who I hear so much about, Lord Bisland who I believe has a rooted distrust in anything Lycene. Merchants and crafters who are generous with their gifts and talents, people I've been blessed to meet like Mistress Svanna. And to be offered advice by the likes of Softest Anisha, Lady Mabelle Laurent, and the feisty Princess of Pravus, I cannot say that I have not been blessed as well. This has been an exciting week... Now I must look forward to the Ball. My life here is anything but boring..

It seems that many more people than ever I had guessed chose to read the white journals of a common man who was in the employ of a Lady of Skal'daja. Very few I have spoken to since my re-elevation found it newsworthy, although there were some few who were not aware.

Will there be more who choose to read the words of a Prince? I suspect so. And yet the things I have to say will have no more merit than the things I said before I swore the oath of fealty that should have been sworn on my majority. The only difference is in the title and the power of he who says them.

I do not need to be made aware of the power a Prince may wield all unawares; I have known it in my own life. Gods grant me the ability to use such power wisely, for I am all too aware of the potential for a mis-step on my part becoming a catastrophe on the part of others.

The city of Arx confuses me, I don't think I'll ever learn my way around this city. With the number of buildings I'm walking in, I'm just waiting to be caught for trespassing.

It is strange to be here without Harlan. It seems I have grown used to his being here when I wake in the middle of the night with bad dreams.

It is true; I have thrown my fair share of snakes at little boys when I was a little girl. I haven't done it a while.

However, I did throw a head of lettuce at Asher the other evening because he was being an asshole. I asked him for his help cooking dinner and he started to give me lip. I rather think he was trying to get me mad. He must have heard that Northern women shag better when they're angry since that's what's eventually happened, after the play wrestling.

Bastard.

Attended Aunt Eirene's wedding today. And Mihaly's. I'll include him since he was there too. But in all seriousness, it was beautiful. All of it. I've never seen two people more fitting for each other. They're reception? What did I learn about the reception.

You know I've seen Martino with a sword. He's improved over the years. Yes scholar, I see your look. He really has. That's him with IMPROVEMENT! Well tonight, I saw him with an ax. AN AX! He threw it at a target. That he didn't really hit. And let me tell you how it went. He almost hit people. Yep. You heard that right. People had to duck. One fell on his foot. And I'm sure he's dying. Or he thinks he is. He will soak this up, I know it. I suppose I'm just glad he didn't lose a toe. The rest of the reception went without a hitch. It was great. No one was hurt.

I just want to say that I'm happy for my aunt. She's found her happy. Her happy place. Yes this marriage created a strong union between our House and Riven. It was an excellent match. But I like knowing that she'll be taken care of too. She won't be unhappy. And I rather enjoy the Riven family. It's a new family as far as I'm concerned. Will I miss Eirene and the twins around the manor? Probably. Not enough to where I can't visit. I'll just send Finn over, or random special packages.

One is a real place. The other a fascinating work of relative fiction, selective facts plucked from colourful papers, and a story meant to delight and deceive and circumscribe an incomplete truth.

Which do you think we're in today?

Well, I have the novella brought over fresh from a kindly author whose take on things is a bit softer than experience might allow.

The other is the Compact, a stunning land of knights and Godsworn, lords and ladies, heirloom swords and mighty heroes, where the seas and snows and mountains mark the end of our good king's grasp and the civilized society prides itself on arranging itself with moral and gentlemanly purpose -- to say naught of what those people out in the wilds or the woods or the lowers are doing -- and where lovely, witty people cross words and rarely swords over gowns and good boots, everyone has twins, and the fate of the nation is properly resolved over milk in the Oathlands, wine near everywhere else, without a dagger to be seen.

We, sometimes, live in a story about a border war. Specifically a border war that happens to be in precisely the same place, precisely the same nation. One of them is the Compact, a monarchy of fractious fealties whose power on the world stage is rising, where uncertainty, ambition, and curiosity are rising, where the population is opening its eyes collectively to the world beyond the nearest community to borders over the sea so suddenly that it's making a few people nsotalgic for the days when all they needed to know and study was the name of the nearest county and its family.

I had a lovely small dinner with Lorenzo and Kenjay this evening in the villa. We caught up on a bit of history, talked about the things we're doing, and our hopeful plans for the future. So much we can't truly plan for, as there is surely as much mystery to the future as not. Still, sitting together over a meal is one of those small joys that doesn't happen often enough these days. I'm of a mind to try to plan a true family dinner sometime soon actually. It's nice to reconnect and catch-up when time allows. The trouble is always finding that time, I suppose.

We are not born for ourselves alone, but for our nation and our friends. As everything which a nation produces is for the benefit of its people, so to is everyone born to the wealth of the nation. Consequently, we should as much serve ourselves as we do others, and to interchange acts of giving and kindness, by our skill, our industry, and our talents, thus creating a foundation on which the Compact may rest forever.

How does time get away from me so easily? I forgot a birthday.... just... completely forgot...

.... and it was my own.

Belated birthday drinks on me at the Spirits (for today only, probably)!
