I remember the planning session for Setarco's defense. It was myself, Katarina, Reese, Kaede and Domonico. The five of us represented the full faith of each of our Houses. Though we lacked the full knowledge of our enemy's strength and disposition, we crafted a plan that maximized our strengths, and had what we believed was the best chance of victory. We submitted that plan to the High Admiral Victus Thrax and he approved it.

Then we implemented that plan without mistake and the first battle of with the Gyre was won handily. We knew there would be a second the next day. Despite the lack of time to plan, we readied ourselves outside Setarco. When the enemy appeared it was in greater numbers, and more significant threats than we could have ever predicted.

So each of us admirals submitted an action plan to the High Admiral Victus. He chose one, and we carried it out to the best of our ability. The day was won, at great cost. The point here, is that there is a chain of command at sea. Whether it is planning, or sailing, or maintenance or navigating, any deviation from the chain of command will leave some important duty in the hands of the less qualified, and that could be fatal, not just to them but to the entire ship.

The defense of the Saffron chain from the Skallies has no High Admiral. It has no transparent chain of command for the other houses offering to be involved. If it continues without such, something is going to fall by the wayside, and the cause will be sunk. I would rather sail a scow tomorrow than go down with my caravel today.

Relationship Note on Clarisse

It is good to see you in good health. It is good to have you walk these halls of our home once more. It has been too long, much to discuss to catch up on. But for now, I'm just blessed to have you returned to us. May the god smile on you in your new home, help you adjust to the work ahead. There is much for a healer to do with the war looming, much to do to protect you as well. I hope, for both of us you are ready for what is coming.

Relationship Note on Reagan

What is it about the future that keeps people frozen in their tracks? Since I have arrived in this city, it has happened to me, the fear of the bride to be. The future of me being tied down, well, tonight it was opened.

At this point, I have found it so far to my liking. Maybe the future is not as dark as I feared. I will spend getting to know this one, but it has been to my liking for now. She wishes to watch me in a spar, cowering not from my bloody arm injured tonight. Maybe, she is not as weak as I feared. This is a new chapter. I will embrace it for now.

Now then, to prepare for war. I will leave my house in the hands of my sister, and my Betrothed has promised to help. We will see what that means when I return, but I fear not for my house. I think that is a good sign, at least.

Laying here in bed and cannot stop thinking about cinnamon rolls and honey buttered crumpets. There may need to be a late night dining hall raid. I hope nobody sees me. Oh, but I may get icing on my blanket. Totally worth it.

Such cute animals shown at the Brightshore meeting at the SoE. The twins would have been so excited had they seen them.

I had the distinct pleasure of spending a night at the Sleepless Knights in the company...of many other fine knights. Yes, when this was organized, the play on words was intentional. While it was a fine way to build camaraderie between the various Orders, mostly it felt good just to talk and drink with men and women who understood the sort of life you led. The weight of some parts of it, and the unique merriment of others. It would be a fine thing to make this a regular sort of drinking night. I may even enjoy more Valardin milk. It does not better than whiskey, but it has its charms.

I have recently been appointed as a professor in the Apothecary College. I am honored that Professor Orick has not only taken the time to invest in me as one of his students but now places his trust in me to aid the college's other students as he has done for me. Once things have settled, I will launch a series of special workshops and seminars on a variety of topics - in addition to the usual course curriculum. I am excited for the possibilities that this brings to all of us!

Relationship Note on Giada

I appreciate sincerely your willingness to work with me as I work through my grief and anger. I have always been quite passionate about everything, and I have a somewhat unwise tendency to run boldly towards trouble. I love deeply and without reservation, and I hold on to hope with both hands. I am truly an emotional creature.

Your patience and spiritual guidance and prayers as I try to make sense of my emotional state are greatly appreciated. You may not have great tolerance for privileged people using their privilege to be asses, but you do very well at seeing humans as human.

It has been a few productive weeks. Keeping myself busy to not focus on recent family loss. I do hope Count Fredrik is safe on his travels, I saw a lot of promise in him as my protege. And more and more things are coming together for my rum tasting contest I will be holding. And making more progress on making my dream into a reality. Everything is beginning to wonderfully fall into place. I feel that there is still even more for Arx to offer in terms of inspiration and I welcome all of it.

Relationship Note on Valdemar

Some time ago, Duke Valdemar set aside an hour or two of his valuable time to assuage some concerns I had regarding a subject most familiar to him. Mirrors. I probably learned more than I wanted to if I'm being honest. It was a privilege and a comfort to be able to gain the perspective of someone from the Isles on this.

How long since the first Caraval sailed into the mouth of our harbor.

How long since the Archduchess Eleyna called those of her lands to her at a dinner party and presented to each, the plans and instructions on how to make them for their own shipwrights to build them. To gift it to the King and then to Thrax. The Carlotta.

I was upon the Victorius in the mouth of the harbor, little Eleyna wished to go on it and who was I to deny her this. I stood on the deck with her in my arm and we looked at the city from afar, the cliff face, the lowers, the Thrax estate and sovereign bridge. To see the other numerous caravals that over the past five years have been making their way into the city's harbors.

Who would have thought of such a creation? Does anyone remember that this came from Velenosa? The sheer cost? The shipwrights and carpenters, is it carpenters who make them? They have become so more skilled at churning them out. We know they can be bigger, we have seen the Imperator Draconis and it's sheer size that still dwarfs our own.

I look at the Caraval and I am reminded of what can be made if one just puts their mind to it. Of that lasting mark that my daughters namesake made upon the naval community. She gave us a Caraval. She gave us the possibility of travel past our own waters.

Relationship Note on Clarisse

Probably the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life. That long curly hair is amazing! I could braid it, or clean it, or scent it with lovely scents like wildflowers or pine or rose, or help you wash it. It looks so fun!

She is a prodigal (like me!) and has a smile that lights up your heart when you see it, she's humble, and friendly and wants to put forth her very best effort. I didn't get to see her long, but I think she is going to make her mark here in Arx.

I'll cheer you on whatever direction you want to go!

I'm reminded of days that seem a lifetime ago, even though they were among my earliest days here in the city. It's hard to believe I've been here for years already, for that matter. I'm reminded of the times when I struggled alone in research. The lad is occupied with another project, so I've been toiling on my own.

It really is strange how much a difference one person can make when it concerns looking for information. These days where I am searching alone are what I find myself recalling. What I couldn't recall was the sense of frustration that came with it. I really have grown dependent on the lad in helping with my own studies, it seems.

It's a very curious sensation, that frustration, one I felt I had to record.

Relationship Note on Sedna

To my cousin, Lady Sedna,

You may take as much issue with my late father as you choose. However, it will be a bit of a one-sided argument, as he is rather too dead to respond in the Whites.

I resolved to never be weak again, but that was not a resolution to abandon femininity, and I would be happy to have numerous lovers write to you and explain that to you in excruciating, horrible detail.

Besides which, even within the realm of warfare, there is an important truth that many traditionalists of the Isles either fail to understand, or understand and wish was not true. The strongest and most capable men in the armies of Sungreet and the various Houses full of little dogs nuzzling at Ivan Helianthus's heels are neither as fearsome, as dangerous, or as terrifying to behold as any provoked mother.

Relationship Note on Lore

Lore took what could have been a terrible evening of being denied something shiny and made it an exceptional evening by gifting me with a wealth of things priceless beyond compare. Leave it to her to sweep into town after being gone so long and make the best and most dramatic entrance. If I wasn't so entirely thrilled to see her once more, I'd be green with envy.
