The Rivenshari have arrived in mass to witness their chief, Athaur Rivenshari, bend on knee to Marquis Marius Greenmarch. They are dressed in their finest silks, their river gypsey heritage showing. His sister, Eshra Rivenshari, looks pensive but she holds the mantle of Rivenshari who's herald symbol is a water serpent wrapped around a boat with pride. Men, women and children, the survivor's of Brand's war have been through much these last few months but most of them seem to support their chief.

Athaur Rivenshari moves to where Marius is standing, his dark eyes twinkle with mischief but there is a friendly smile on his face as he approaches House Greenmarch's leader. There is no doubt in his mind that this is the best thing for his people. There is a subtle glance to see if a certain lady is present but afterwards focuses his attention where it needs to be.

Kit, the grey fox, Brigid the Genet arrive, following Monique.

Roland, a great horned owl arrives, following Edain.

(repose for new arrivals)

Marius rises from his high-backed chair as Athaur approaches, his face split by a warm and genuine smile for the chief. While many of his family are in attendance and bedecked in their best as well, it seems a notable few are absent. When Athaur is near, Marius says in a clear voice, "Family and friends - whether you be Valardin, Greenmarch, Rivenshari or otherwise - welcome. Today is a momentous day for both Greenmarch and Rivenshari, as we are here to witness a change in relationship, in keeping with the tradition of fealty." He places his hand on Athaur's shoulder and says, "A thousand years ago, my family was exiled from the Compact. We moved to the Greenwood, and there we forged new relationships - new friendships - among the tribes we met. We enjoyed peace, but we always knew we must return to the Compact. My father bent his knee and spoke the oath of fealty not six years ago. Since then, we have seen the benefits of the Compact for us, and also the benefit we bring TO the Compact. I am excited to see the Rivenshari experience the same."

The Minx of the Marches is there to see her brother's triumph, of course. Monique stands near, looking on with an effusive pride as Marius speaks. Her gown is a warm honeyed silk, but it's her hair that stands out; a vivid, sunrise shade of red, brushed and unadorned, hanging in a beautiful waterfall down her back. In her hands, a small backpack, looking stuffed full.

Edain Valardin, Prince of Sanctum enters the lodge quietly, and without fanfare. For here, today he is just a guest, here to watch the young Marquis accept an oath of fealty. Even the usually recalcitrant Roland, seems to understand that this is a sober occasion that demands your attention and respect, and thus he just perches on his human's shoulder, wide owl eyes taking in every thing, and looking to each person as if studdying a face. Edain for his lingers in the back and finds a nice quiet place along the wall to stand an observe.

Shard is here to look on and little more, and to that end, she's keep as low a profile as is possible for someone of her station and appearance. She's off to one side and well back, although she can still see the ceremony itself more or less. Her expression is best described as a little pensive, mostly guarded. She stands at a very relaxed parade rest.

Athaur smiles at Marius as he places his hand on his shoulder, "In times of old, Greenmarch and Rivenshari served as allies. My people's boats brought supplies to your tribe. We both prospered under our treaties." He gives Marius a solemn look, "But these last six years, we have felt the absence. We have known great hardship. And my people can not prosper without the aide of House Greenmarch." He looks to his people as if to remind them why they stand there today before Marius and his people. It is clear that he will not brook any rebellion today.

Athaur then bends on one knee and offers the only weapon, a dagger, to Marius as he says the solemn words that will bind himself and his people to Crown and Compact, "I, Athaur of the Rivenshari, pledge my fealty and those in my charge, to House Greenmarch, and Marquis Marius Greenmarch. My steel is his to command, my people his to protect. I accept his lordship over my house, and may the gods/spirits deal have no mercy on me if I violate this faith. This, I do swear."

The other Rivenshari bend on knee as well, including his sister, and repeat the same oath that was given to House Greenmarch. Once the first verse is finished, Athaur continues by saying to Marius, still on knee and his head bowed, "I promise on my faith that I will in the future be faithful to Marquis Marius Greenmarch, never cause him harm and will observe my homage to him completely against all persons in good faith and without deceit."

Edain in looking inobtrusive, Edain finds himself next to the other observer Shard. He bows his head in polite greeting. As does Roland. The owl is capable of good manners when nessecary.

Shard looks sidelong toward Edain. She returns the bowed head with a faint, curt nod of her own, and a slightly longer look toward the owl--one that, perhaps in spite of herself, is a little curious. The moment passes, however, and her attention returns, mostly, to the ceremony. It's clear she's still keeping track of him.

Eshra of the Rivenshari may not agree with her brother's choice but she bends on knee with him because he is chief of their people. A few tears fall on her cheek as she holds the mantle of the Rivenshari, waiting for the time for her brother to finish his oaths so she can hand it to him to give to Marius. Her sorrow is not reflected by all present. Most in the tribe seem to agree with Athaur that this is necessary but like always, there are those that want something else.

Marius takes the dagger offered and knicks his palm with it, then tucks the dagger in his belt. Marius then places his bleeding hand on Athaur's head, and says, "I, Marquis Marius Greenmarch, accept the oaths of fealty of Athaur, Chief of the Rivenshari people. His people are mine to protect, signified by my blood on them; let all know that to strike the Rivenshari is to strike at Greenmarch. May the gods and spirits have no mercy on my if I violate this faith. This, I do swear." Marius' tone and expression are proud as he speaks, leaving little doubt of his sincerity. Removing his hand, he offers his other one to Athaur, and says, "Rise, Count Athaur Rivenshari. I grant you the county of Rivenshari, the lands of your people. Lead them well, as I know you will." He beams warmly and then gestures, saying, "Welcome to the Compact, to all Rivenshari. This is a great day, one we'll mark with joy for centuries to come." There's a pause and a glint in his green eyes before he adds, "Now, there's a great deal of food and drink here - will you all help us eat and drink it all?" And then the party starts!

Monique cheers raucously. There's no reserve in Marius' little sister, onyl her spirit and vibrance as she welcomes the newest subjects to the clan.

THe Prince of Sanctum gives a hearty cheer for the Rivershari to welcome them to the compact. As he does, Roland the owl takes flight from his shoulder and goes to land on the edge of the refreshment table as if to check out what treats are available and if any will catch his eye. Edain's cheeks flush then as some eyes turn his way. He clears his throat and looks to Shard, "Pardon me good woman..." he says as he claps his hands together, awkwardly and then he starts to wards t he refreshment table. "Welcome to the Compact." he says to some of the Rivershari giving him an odd look...

Athaur stays on knee until Marius grants him the leave to stand. He then rises when prompted, smiling deeply as Marius names his title, "Count Athaur Rivenshari...I like the sound of that." He turns to his sister and the rest of the Rivenshari that rise after he does, "Please give your greeting to His Excellency so he may know you by name." He takes the mantle of his people that once signified his membership as an Abandoned Chief, "Please accept this as a token of what we were and are now to your people." He gives the mantle to Marius care and turns to his people, "Drink and be merry...today is a day of celebration." He lets out a cry and then more softly tells his sister, "It will be well...do not worry."

Marius takes the mantle from Athaur as offered, inclining his head in gratitude. "I'll display it with honour, Count," he says, though there's a wry smile at the use of the new title. He turns his attention to meeting the Rivenshari in attendance, though he does say to Athaur, "My cousin sends her regards. I regret that I needed to send her on an errand of some importance, and she was delayed. She will be back in a day or two, I'm sure."

That seems to be Monique's cue to make her way over to the buffet and out of Marius' sight. She's not about to stand in for her cousin. "What looks good," the Minx muses as she surveys the laden tables. "Or, what goes well with the copious amounts of whiskey we're all sure to imbibe?" She teases sidelong to some Rivenshari and Edain.

Shard neither cheers nor claps, but then, she doesn't look like the sort of person for which cheering, at least, is particularly in character. She gives Edain another, even slighter nod as he moves off towards the refreshments table, but for her part, she stays where she is, observing. Now that the ceremony part is over, however, she relaxes a little more.

Edain grimaces just a touch at the mention of whiskey. There is a forth coming drinking contest that he is not looking forward too... He reaches the edge of the refreshment table and picks up Roland in both hands. The owl just 'whoots' with a tone that indicates some kind of mild dissappoinment, "You gorged on squirrel before you came over here. There's nothing t h ere for you. It will be fine, Roland."

Athaur leaves Marius to meet the rest of the Rivenshari, and makes his way over to the refreshment table so he can greet Prince Edain, an honored guest." He sees the owl and smiles, "He is quite the wingspan." He gives a bow to Edain, and then to the others present, "Thank you for coming to witness my tribe becoming House Rivenshari."

"I sent over some fresh maple bacon earlier." Edain says to Monique, "It is delicious and warm!" He turns then and bows to Athaur, still holding Roland almost like a pensive child as he does. "Thank you Count Athaur. He does have quite the wing span indeed. He does not always mind me commands well, but I have learned that if I let him be what he is meant to be, there are few hunters more effective." He looks up at the new count and says, "I am glad for you to have joined the compact. Marquis Marius is a man that rules with Wisdom and grace, and both of your people's will be stronger for this. And your joining the compact gives my own family a chance to try and make up for the mistakes we have made in the past. I thank you for this."

Ulf arrives, following Fergus.

Marian is standing off to the side, by the refreshment table, watching her liege talk to the new Count Athaur. She has a look of pride on her face for Marius as she watches him interact with his new people.

Monique perks at Edain's tribute to this feast, and her eyes scan for it. But they pull up in laughing regret when Athaur joins them. She essays her own curtsey after Edain speaks, adding, "Count Athaur. It was a very dignified ceremony. Welcome. I hope you all will be happy as a part of Greenmarch."

Shard remains distant from the gathering near the table, although she's clearly watching, and it's probably safe to say, listening.

Fergus heard that there was going to be a new vassal house for Greenmarch. Which he's kind of going to be related to eventually. So the big Redrain arrives inside to see just what the hubbub is about. And maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to make nice with new Valardin houses. He guesses.

Athaur looks at Edain with serious, solemn eyes, "This is a new day, a new start for my people. Whatever hostilities we had in the past shall be set aside." He offers a hand to the prince, "I enter this with loyalty and friendship." He nods to his sister who is quietly moving away from the action, "There are some that wish our lives had taken a different path but I think she will see the wisdom in years to come."

Marian perks up when she sees Fergus walk into the lodge. She motions to Monique as if to her mischievous sister know not to toy with her fiance, "Fergus, you missed the ceremony but there are drinks and food at the refreshment table."

Shard watches Athaur's sister leave for a time before her attention shifts back to the gathering.

"Trust is a thing earned. I will do my best to ensure we continue to earn it of your people, who are rightly, not ready to give it yet." Edain says with a bow. He fianlly sets Roland on his shoulder. "Count Athaur you should fix yourself a plate and pour yourself a drink. The Telmarch Potato salad is particularly good too." He recommends before excusing himself to go and start fixing a plate, "Goodwoman?" he says in the direction of Shard, "What can I get you to drink?"

Monique tosses a wave of her fingers Marian's ways, as if to say 'who, me? I would never!' Even they both know she would. She finds the drink easily enough, and pours herself a generous libation. "Do you know, the only thing missing is a challenge of sorts! Food, but no games?"

Shard shakes her head as Edain draws her gaze again. "Nothing," she says, in a clipped tone, the first word she's spoken since arriving. "Thank you."

Athaur takes Edain's advise and starts to fix himself a plate. A few of the Rivenshari move to the side and bring out some instruments to start playing one of the songs from their people. He turns to Monique and gives her a look of interest, "A game? What did you have in mind?"

"Fashionably late, that's my fucking thing." Fergus grunts, coming over to Marian's side, the Valardin getting a quick kiss. "How'd it go, eh? All good an shit? Got yourselves a County an all. Figure that's pretty good. But all that inner workings an shit is beyond me." A glance at Monique, looking back to Marian. "Sister of yours? Feel like eventually I'll meet all your damn family."

Marian glares at her sister when she brings up a game, "Monique..." She doesn't want her causing trouble when Marius just got the Rivenshari to join the Compact, "I do hope this is a nice game." Hint, hint. She gives Fergus a quick kiss back, "Yes, we inducted Athaur and his people into the Compact." Then she realizes that she never introduced her fiance to her sister, "Oh shit..." She looks around to see if anyone noticed, "Monique...this is Fergus...Fergus...this is Monique." Now they're introduced.

Edain fixes a plate that is piled high with maple bacon, some cheese, what looks like osme kind of corn bread muffin, and other types of biscuits. He makes his way over where Marian and Fergus stand, and silently offers his plate for them to pick from if they choose to do so. He looks again to Shard, "What about maple bacon? Everyone likes maple bacon."

"Yes, I had heard you were engaged," Monique replies to Marian, accusation in her tone. "Though not from you. Until now." Hmph. She turns back to the newest part of Greenmarch, summarily dismissing Marian's not so subtle hints. "Count Athaur, I hoped to honor you and beg that you might teach us a traditional game of the Rivenshari to play, that we might all learn together?"

"I only came to see the ceremony," Shard replies. She spares the table a glance, but there's no hint that she's any more inclined to move there now than she was a moment ago. "I'm not particularly hungry."

Crap, it's Edain, Fergus needs to actually behave. "Your Grace. How you doing. Good day for ya, eh?" He really tries, but it's evident that he's not all that used to actually using titles all that often. "Have to say, gotta be strange. One day you're just doing your thing in the woods, next day you're getting titles and shi- er, stuff being tossed at you, suddenly peerage. Can't say that wouldn't be a bit overwhelming, yeah?" Marian gets a little nudge of the elbow. "Look at you, telling everyone *but* your family. What? Ashamed of me that you can't bring me home? I can behave when I want to."

"I grew up around Duke Arn Telmar, Prince Fergus. Trust me there is no need to censor your language." Edain says, before adding, "Also, Princess Marian might have just been waiting until her family had time to reinforce their furniture." He offers by way of theory and helps himself to a piece of maple bacon of his own.

Maxene, Camille arrive, following Alarissa.

Athaur turns to Monique with a flashing smile, "Well, I'm afraid most of our games are done on the water." Since he has those at the party's attention, he continues, "But...we do love to play a storytelling game where one starts by telling two sentences and then another jumps in and adds to the tale. How you lose or drop out is by being unable to come up with anything on the spot." He then clears his throat and announces to the group, "The once was a man who lived on a boat who lost his sail at sea, but fortune's grace did ever see that he'd instead." Then he quickly tags Monique to let her know that she's it. It's her turn to continue the tale.

"You know I'm not good at sharing," Marian tells her sister with a huff, looking to Fergus for help but he has his own struggles with Edain, "And I'm not ashamed of //you//." She gives her sister a snarky look that's sure to bait. Luckily Marius is no where near by because she wouldn't want to hurt his feelings. But for some reason she loves to bait Monique when she's feeling cornered and in the wrong.

Somewhere in the back, stnading quietly and observing what was going on is another Valardin who came as observer and guest. It's not often that one gets to see these things happening and it can be a sight to see so Alarissa has slipped in quietly at some point, devoid of retinue to watch.

Monique can't rise to her sister's bait because she's too busy enjoying this game of Athaur's! "...come across a mermaid in the briny blue. But a sailor's luck can never hold, and his fishmaid turned out to be instead..." Monique turns Edain's way, reaching out to tap the munching man. Only then does she steal a look back to Monique. Hmph.

"Guess you could say I'm hedging my bets to make sure I get Mari to the altar an shit." Fergus grunts Edain's way. "Can't say I really know what was in the contract, but Short Stack kept making mention of pickles. Darren better of bartered for some maple bacon at that point. I also heard she volunteered you for a drinking contest. Just as well, ain't no reason to be sober at the reception. I know my future wife won't be." Speaking of, he plucks a couple pieces off the High Lord's plate since he offered. "Although...maple bear bacon." he considers a moment. "Wonder if that could be a thing." Though he coughs a bit at the furniture part. "Does *everyone* in your fucking manor know about that now?"

Shard pulls a face as the game gets started. She moves back a little, even though she's already well out of tapping range, and then, as if thinking better of the whole matter, she turns and moves toward the Great Hall's entrance. While she doesn't hurry, it's clear her intent is to make a quick, quiet exit.

Edain is chewing some maple bacon and it is clear form his face that he was only half listening to this burgeoning tale. As Monique taps his shoulder he double takes and swallows hard as his brain races. "Um.... twas a a really stout goodwoman who had gone noodling and gotten her legs swallowed by a very large catfish. Strong as she was though she managed to swim her way to the shore and looked up at the sailor and said......" he turns then and taps Fergus shoulder for him to continue.

Athaur has a hearty laugh when it turns out their mermaid is really a stout woman who was noodling catfish. He turns his eye and looks at Fergus to see what he's going to say next.

Edain safe from the story, Edain makes his way over towards, Alarissa and offers his plate, "Maple bacon?" he asks of her.

Noodling catfishing women, Alarissa gives Edain a look with raised brows and an amused smile. "Noodling and corn holing Prince Edain?" Alarissa was making her way to the small group and she he doesn't have to move far. The maple bacon is regarded and she takes a piece from the plate so she can break it in half and carefully nibble upon it. "I cannot confess to having heard of this style of entertainment before. Perhaps we need to do this at the next Valardin gathering." She keeps her voice low so as to not directly disturb the storytelling and so she can hear it.

Huh..okay. "'I'll give you one of these pearls I found in the fish's stomach.' she said. With an offer like that, how could he refuse. So what he did was..." Fergus replies in his part of the game, tapping his fiance on the shoulder, signifying it's her turn.

"Pull his sword and gutted the catfish so he could save the stout woman inside," Marian tells the folks there with a laugh when Fergus makes her the storyteller, "She opens her mouth to pull out the pearl but there was more than just riches there..." She looks around and then taps Alarissa for her to be next storyteller.

And Alarissa is it. Caught there with bacon in her hand and squickly chewing what's in her mouth as she quickly thinks. "There was a very tiny fish with very brilliant scales with the pearl. The catfish had swallowed it whole and when it was exposed to the air with the pearl...." Alarissa glances to the others to make sure she hadn't messed up the process.

Athaur shouts out to Alarissa, "You have to pick someone to continue the tale. You have one...two...three..." He's counting down to let Alarissa know she only have a few moments or risk being disqualified.

Alarissa turns and taps Edain then, when the rules are more clearly explained to her, looking at him with a very sorry look on her face for dragging him back in.

Oh god... not a gain....

Edain draws a deep breath "Ok so when exposed to the air at the same time the small fish and pearl um... turned into a twelve foot tall knight in gleaming silver armor adorn with bright white pearls. He looked down at the sailor and the woman and said, "Thank you for freeing me as I reward I shall....."" He looks then to Monique and says, "Carry on Lady Monique."

Edain leans over and murmurs to Alarissa, "I am not sure I am doing this right."

Monique checked composure at difficulty 15, rolling 6 lower.

Monique turns, and it seems that she has been caught stuffing her face with the bacon and drinking the whiskey, so all that comes out is garbled laughter and a bow of her shining head in defeat to Athaur.

Fergus just kind of stares a bit at Edain, giving a chuff of amusement at how strange the story just got.

"Monique is now out, she has lost the game, but the story won't die with her," Athaur who's officiating the game calls out to the group, "As a reward, I shall officiate your wedding since you seem so well suited for each other..." He lightly claps Fergus on the shoulder to let him know that it's his turn.

Alarissa, murmuring to Edain, smiles at whatever the two of them are talking about in hushed whispers but she keeps her attention on the game and the players, a hand coming to cover her mouth and stifle a laugh when monique is bowing out with a mouthful of food and drink.

Fergus checked composure at difficulty 15, rolling 1 higher.

Fergus doesn't laugh, really only Marian has seen him do that. This lips upturn making the scars on his face twist, but he doesn't, keeping his cool. Alright. "'Give you this badass fucking sword and you and I? We're going to go roll over those pirates that cursed me to that form. We'll find them-'" And he goes ahead and taps Marian, since she hasn't had a turn in a bit and Monique is already out. "You go, darlin."

Fergus doesn't laugh, really only Marian has seen him do that. But being put on the spot again, he stammers. "Uh. 'On the shore of this very beach, will be the seat of kingdom that will join land and sea together. One a year, and the anniversary of your marriage, drop a pearl into the ocean that will signify..." Whew, and looks over to Marian, shaking his head. "I'd hate to play this shit drunk. No wait, I'd *love* to play this shit drunk."

Marian checked composure at difficulty 15, rolling 3 lower.

Marian is drinking her mead and sputters when her fiance tries to hand her the next verse. She looks so flustered because she has no idea on how she's going to continue on, so like Monique, Marian is now out of the game.

Second person dropped the verse, but we're ready to go on," Athaur calls out to the crowd and then adds a line to the story, "Your eternal devotion to one another. If you don't wish to stay the course, you may drop the pearl in a..." He turns to Edain with a twinkle in his eye and then points to him, indicating that he needs to continue the story.

Edain checked composure at difficulty 15, rolling 2 lower.

"You can.. um... do the... thing and um.." Clearly Edain was not ready for this... "I DON'T KNOW!" he conceeds finally, looking around the room, a bit embarrassed.

Marian shakes his head with a sad look and tells the crowd, "Three verses dropped, we're about at the end of the rope. Anyone else fails then the story will end." He looks at the remaining folks, "So make this good my friends..." He clears his throat and continues the last leg of the story, "Fire and let the pearl burn out to signify this union is not for you. The knight binds the two together in matrimony and then..." He points to Alarissa with a smile to see if she can keep the story going.

Marian claps a hand on Edain's shoulder, "It's okay...I messed up too. Let's see if Alarissa or Fergus wins the game."

Edain faileded, and she knew what was coming and listens carefully. "And then the knight looks to the woman, the pearl held aloft in his hand and presented to her." Alarissa was prepared, there's a smile at Edain again, wide, almost her back teeth seen and affectionate before she looks back to the rest of the gathered, her hands palm in palm at her waist. "The years may pass and we will come here again each time but I will never place this pearl in the water." Alarissa lifts a hand then to gently tap Fergus's shoulder with a smile.

Alarissa checked composure at difficulty 15, rolling 3 higher.

Fergus checked composure at difficulty 15, rolling 11 lower.

Fergus's lips quirk, and he thinks. Maybe he thinks for too long, because eventually, he can't really seem to come up with anything. "Fuck, you got me." he shrugs. "Don't got anything to come back with that. Besides, seems like a good end to the fucking story, if you ask me."

Athaur laughs and nods, "An excellent time to end the story." He then turns to Alarissa and holds out a ring for her, "And you, my silver tongue lady, here is a prize for your tale. I hope you wear it with pride in knowing that you were the wittest one of the bunch today." He gives a flourished bow and then hands her the ring.

Edain smiles to Athaur and says, "A lovely game Count Athaur. I think we should do this again very soon." He turns then and bows to Alarissa, "You are indeed a masterful story teller." He looks out to the room as a whole then and says, "I am afraid I should go look into a few matters before the Laurent Festival tonight. I was my honor to see you all today."

Athaur holds out a ring and Alrissa reaches out to take it, hold it carefully in her hand. "To be fair, I did not partake straight from the start and so I did not have as much of the tale to complete as the others. But I take the prize and I will wear it with that full knowledge, even on the days that I do not feel my wittiest." She slips the ring on a finger, trying to find which one that it fits better, a dip of her head to the man. There's a blush rising to her cheeks at Edains compliment. A nod as well when he makes his overtures to leave but doesn't move to stop him.

Marian looks around at Fergus, annoyed now because she didn't realize there was a prize involved. She gives him a shoulder nudge with a teasing look. Then claps for Alarissa, "Good show princess....good show."

Roland, a great horned owl leaves, following Edain.

Fergus snorts at Marian. "Oh don't give me that fucking look. You'll get your own here soon." he utters back to her at the fact that there is indeed a prize involved, in the form of a ring. "And I'll make sure it's super duper pretty Princess ring and everything." He grunts, ruffling Marian's hair a little bit in a tease.
