Maybe a nice turn of events for once? That would be nice. Also lucky.

Alright, Lagoma. Alright.

You set your mark on everything. Every choice made by Skald enacts your change, Gild's efforts in the world to civilize and improve bring about your will. You and Death are near sisters, handing to each other the care and growth of we who fall into your care, her care. The sealing of a vow to Limerance enforces change. Petrichor's dominion is governed by the cycle of your seasons. Even the Thirteenth, whose call to self-reflection and awareness, leads to those who answer it working to improve themselves. Gloria's honoured warriors rely on your healers to see them through their losses, and they and Jayus' inspired work to change and grow their abilities. All the others too... you're at the heart of the Dream, your touch subtle and inescapable. You are the light, and the warmth, and the comfort, ever in support of your brothers and sisters, always a beacon to us.

I understand. I answer.

Spring! The weather today was marvellous. Snow melting, river running fast. Had a picnic outside of Arx on a beach with amazing company. A good, mostly lazy day.

The whole crew are getting more cheerful, knowing we'll be sailing a lot more. In between, my time will be dedicated much to the Queen.

With one glove one can eat and look good at the same time without getting messy.

It really makes sense.

After a few days in the city, I have concluded that I have been given some sort of obscure test. While on the search for the Redwoods, I heard that their training is notoriously brutal. I don't know that this is brutal, since I was given the resources with which to have a weapon made, but I would have thought I'd been given some sort of casts offs or used gear. Clearly, giving me materials I could easily sell is a test to see if I would just sell them, but unless they have contacts with every craftsman in the city, how would they know if I did?

I have no reason to do that, so am focusing on the challenge of finding a suitable shop. That should just be a matter of observation and asking. Not too much a test, but I am a recruit, so I know they do not expect much...

The real challenge is, I have no idea what to have made or even what would suit me or be good. What is a mercenary weapon anyway? I don't remember any of my mother's tales about father that mentioned that.

Carelessly, I put Soteris in the crib with his brother, Verus. I thought the two would be pleased to nap together. How wrong I was. Verus began to yell, and Soteris to cry. I suppose out of territorial priorities. Damianos, however, insisted he nap with me. Nobody was happy until they all napped with me.

Even the Marquis.

It is important to think with proper detachment, and to reason in a context-specific fashion. One must always be willing to change their mind as one learns more in new circumstances.

Relationship Note on Ajax

There is wisdom in what you have written, Goodman. And I believe that though there are matters which I must bring to a close with the gravity their nature demands, it is time to return to a more amiable nature.

Relationship Note on Peri

There is a difference between questions and questioning, that perhaps I was not clear about.

Asking for understanding, the 'what is this?' 'what is the reason we do this?' questions, are perfectly fine. These are how you understand, this is part of learning.

Even questioning yourself, the choices you have made, questioning your decisions on the battlefield or posing yourself or others moral quandries, trying to find a better moral path? That is not a problem, indeed it is to be encouraged. We should all improve.

The problem is in questioning the firmament of our society, questioning the established order. Not asking what it is, but questioning its very nature, asking /why/ it should be that we worship the Gods, or give obedience to the king, or why we should hold to our oaths. These are the questions that serve no purpose other than to introduce doubt where there is no need or virtue to it. They serve no-one but our enemy.

Of course, others disagree, but the Orthodoxy has stood on these principles since the time of Carnifex Alor Valardin.

Relationship Note on Dianara

Dianara gifted me several bolts of seatouched wool. She is just the sweetest! I took that material and had the loveliest outfit made. It is gorgeous.

So while I welcome spring and the warmer months, it is a pity that I hardly had the chance to wear my new ensemble! But just wait until next autumn -- I will knock everyone's socks off with all my plaid.

Now that I think about it, if the priests in my childhood had tried to instill the Pantheon lessons in me with card tricks, I'd mostly just know more card tricks by now.

..but then if I knew more card tricks, maybe I'd know a more impressive one that gets across the Pantheon lessons better.

Wait a minute, is this one of those 'could Mangata create a wave even she couldn't crest' dilemmas?

Relationship Note on Celeste

Prince Alarice does not believe everything that Cassian Rope claims when she describes the countries visited on her expeditions, but he reads the young Explorer's reports with greater attention than he shows any other member of her guild: "In the life of the prince there is a moment that follows an evening feast, with the odor of tired horses in the rain and the sandalwood ashes fading in the braziers; a hot clarity that consumes the dispatches announcing the collapse of the last Abandoned troops and that melts the wax of the seals of obscure lordlings who beseech Alarice's protection, offering in exchange tributes of shadowsilk and Cardian tortoiseshell.

"At that moment, the prince hears the first far-off call of a lost dream whispering that this empire is merely a stepping-stone, a foothill raising us closer to the clouds, closer to a station so divine that the gentlest gods strike us down."

Must you travel, my brandywine prince? What do you seek? Did you leave some thing behind, some place, some one who cannot bear your absence? Must you sail for a country unknown, unnamed, and uncharted, beyond the dream of empire, that nevertheless feels as near to you as my head on your beating chest?

We will follow her rivers, search her valleys, and inquire about her oldest taboos. We will stand for hours, talking with veiled fathers in terracotta archways, watching while they call their children home.

(In a scrawl: History that is not shared is not history. It is a broken bottle in the grip of thieves who claim that the sight of our blood staining the snow-packed cobbles belongs only to them.)
