I have known all of those things about you all along, Princess Valencia. You are a rare flower among thorns, and I hope you always stay that way.

Marquis Volkhov,

Thanks to your sister, Aahana, you have at least one convert. I have been feeling more comfortable around them all the time.

Relationship Note on Gerard

I was very excited to hear about Sir Dastrid's engagement and he wrote me to tell me so I would be hearing it from him and not in the whites. My heart is nearly bursting with joy from all of the good news today.

One of the most common questions I hear is how to become a magistrate, and my first response is always to ask "Why would you want to do that?" I am proud of my calling, and it's important to me to make sure that people who want to sit in judgement over others do it for the right reasons.

You might think that the magistracy is an office of honor and of glory and renown. You might even think that rising through the ranks of magistrates will result in history remembering your name for all time. I call on everyone who would seek this office to put aside such foolish notions. The last thing a magistrate wants is to be remembered by history.

Being a magistrate is a grand study in tedium. Most of your days will be spent in humble wooden halls, listening to two people stretch the truth to the very breaking point of the definition. From their words you will be forced to extract the facts and make a decision, and neither of them will thank you for it. You'll dismiss them, call two more, and do it over again. Perhaps the occasional case of low or middle justice will bring a bit of spice to the dullness of your day, but it will quickly return to tedium, where days and weeks tend to blend together.

Should, gods forbid, you ever be called upon to sit over a case of high justice, you will wish for the tedium once more. High justice is not exciting - it is overwhelming to keep your information straight, it is exhausting to keep control of a courtroom filled with the passions that burn when someone's life hangs in the balance, and it is terrifying to know that you will, at the end, make a decision that will serve to judge your career. High justice is often decided by a trial by combat, and so much the better for it; the best case for you, the magistrate, is that history forgets your name.

The names history remembers are the prosecutors of the Crown, the ones who present their cases with flair and authority and dominate the courtroom. They are also the Mirrormask Advocates who who take the hopeless cases of the accused and rise to greatness through their passionate defense of one whose guilt seemed almost certain. When history remembers a magistrate, it is because the King overturned a case, or because they were corrupt and their corruption was exposed to the City.

The only time history remembers us is when we're wrong. We are expected to be correct, and so when we are correct, it is forgotten. It's better to be forgotten.

Ours is not an office of glory and renown, it is an office of solemn duty and devotion. It is tedious, it is unforgiving, and it is not for most. For those who are common-born, it is a stable crown office with decent pay, lacking in the uncertainty of private legal practice. It is a fine capstone to years of service, especially since a common magistrate will rarely see the sort of cases that can end a career. For a peer, it must be a calling, one lacking in any thought of personal glory to be obtained.

There are so many better ways for the highborn to make their mark on history.

Relationship Note on Felicia

Recently I met Dame Felicia Harrow for some training. I have a task coming up, yet I feel overly rusty. Not to mention with Mandate's reforging, I needed to put some time in the training grounds. Make no mistake, the woman hits as hard as my war-hammer does. Still, plenty of banter, good conversation and some lessons learned on both sides. I held my own far better than I imagined. Alas though, the match was hers. Hit me in the helm so hard I saw my departed Mirabel! I heard bells for a while... heard some tweeting birds.

I have a secret project that I am so excited about. Maybe even TWO related secret projects.

However I will keep the secret, for anonymity's sake and because the announcement itself should be a surprise and thus create great demand.

Things I have learned this week:

- I am more tenacious than I realized.
- I often see value where others may not.
- I love hosting parties, something I have forgotten and have been beautifully reminded of at the Start Spring Fling.
- I remain in love with the idea of love.
- I get most cross with those I care for.
- Swimming at night under the stars with good company is something I should do more of.
- Worrying about what others think of me is something I should do less of.
- And, apparently I am more fierce in competition than I thought with the right inspiration.

Though, I think I would not have done nearly as well without my talented teammates. Though to be true, my competitors were very formidable. I think luck was more than on my side this time, to be true.

A very busy and very wonderful week. I cannot wait for next week's lessons.

The Whisper Liaison to the Academy of War.

I have the distinct feeling, somewhere in the Queen of Ending's company, Eos is outrageously amused by this. So clear is the image of him in my mind in such a state, I am on the verge of pouting for it.

Diplomacy is as necessary as swords, in the right circumstance.

It is so terribly fitting such a bright, warm young woman arrived with the spring. She suits the season well, and I think I will always attribute it to her now. I look forward to see her blossom in this city; no doubt she will bring her own colours to liven the world around her.

That'll happen when you ask for advice.

Reckon on who you trust, and who knows what they're talking on. Think it through to see what seems to hold truest.

And remember it's on you to make the decision, however folk talk on it.

I know not everyone was born on horseback (metaphor), and I understand Arx is quite a city and that many of its citizens are born and raised here and rarely have need for horses...

But I am continually astonished how common it is for people of this city to be uncomfortable with the prospect of horses.
