Comments and Log

It is early morning and the sun is just starting to rise. Autumn is still lingering, but the air is getting nippy and it might be a little chilly. The party is gathering up near the start of the gray forest. They all been asked to join this patrol by Reese who spoke of them quietly slipping into the foresting and heading to the northeast to see how things are that way. They were advised to look for any troubles, corrupted animals, hostile Shavs and so forth. Reese also advised that they try to keep themselves safe and flee from any overwhelming odds.

Merek has decided to put on his cloak which covers most of his leathers as well as the umbra which he wears. He has his sword upon his back while he takes his time to relax at the gathering place. He has all his supplies, while he takes his time to pull out a cigar and light it with a striker, before he inhales from it and takes a moment to look at the horizon. No horses for him, he'd like to travel on foot for now it seems.

Suited up in what's become a standardized combat medic uniform of assorted leathers, the Palace Seraph takes a moment before the patrol begins to check stock of the healing supplies in her multiple bags and pouches. Ailith nods briefly to the others during this check, murmuring, "There should be enough to hold through emergencies, but only to reach the healing houses." With a lack of a horse, or rather unskilled in riding, she appears to be taking this patrol on foot.

Eilowny, one of the last of the Thunderoak tribe and now a northern prodigal makes her way outside the city gate leading a sturdy pony suited to her small size. She's dressed for the cold, silk, and wool under her leather armor to keep her comfortable and a small pack on her horse. She studies the trees carefully, looking at the ground ahead of them after a moment. Glancing to the others standing outside the gate she pips up. "You're also to patrol?"

The Lady Arianna arrived fifteen minutes ahead of schedule. Always one to take her obligations seriously, the young Voice of Stonewood was punctual and well prepared. She had rented a horse from the city stables, a black mare with a penchant for attitude. The young woman had taken a liking to her immediately and despite the warnings of the stablemaster - she decided to take her out for the patrol. Adorned in a rubicund scalemail top which looked more like fashion than armor and fit like a second skin, form fitting pants, thigh high boots and long sleeved gloves of fine leather; the young Lady seemed quite prepared for the patrol. As the others began to gather, a nod of greeting was given for each in turn. "Hello Merek, good to see you again." The others she had never met, and introductions were in order. "Hello others, I'm Arianna. Well met."

1 Grayson Guardsmen arrives, following Aiden.

Merek takes his time to nod to the others, "Officer Black, of the Guard," he offers as a greeting. He then takes his time to wait for other folk to be ready before his cloak is shifted and he begins off to do some checking ahead of the group while the others get ready to set out too.

Looking from face to face, Eilonwy lifts a hand. "Eilonwy Thunderoak. Used to scout some in my tribe, before we came south." She offers and looks away to check her pony's tack and make sure her knife was easy to grab with a glance to the trees again.

Ailith rises from her crouched position, a tall visage despite being on foot. "Ailith. Well met." The Seraph studies them individually and offering, "Before we depart, a prayer as we step on a darkened path. You may choose to join me or attend to it in your own fashion." She steps aside to gather, any may join, and a short prayer is recited - To Gloria - Before Battle - which asks for the Goddess to shield them and steady their sword arms.

Prince Aiden was delayed in his arrival, though came upon Lightfoot, the red dun from the palace stables that was once again on loan to him. A guard follows along behind, naturally, unwilling to part from his ward, as was his duty. The young man was wearing a thick fur cloak, with a black tunic with purple accents sitting over the leather cuirass. He was sporting a bag as well, over his shoulder, as well as his bow and quivar, plus a dagger at his belt. He was equipped and prepared to ride out once more for the Gray Forest, looking around toward the others with a beseeching address, "Forgive my tardiness good people."

The svelt looking woman looked more a Dragon in that armor than she did a Lady of Grayson fealty. Though she most certainly had the elven thin build, height, blonde hair and pale eyes that were most common sights within the Crownlands. Her accent was decidedly Lycean however, and one could tell that her attire was very much Velenosan inspired. Tutting to her horse she begins to set off toward the treeline, peering over her shoulder with a smirk and nodding to the others. "Shall we set off before it gets dark?" When Ailith begins to pray, she pauses in a show of reverence and dips her head out of respect. Listening to the prayer and pitching in at the end.

The forest stretches out before them and the sun continues to rise. So far nothing is amiss, but they are still gathering up. Various trials goes in various direction as this part of the forest is well traveled. Who is in front and who is in toward the back? Is anyone keeping to the middle?

The Prince reins in the red dun upon the prayers to Gloria, his brows furrowing, "I would hope too we are praying to Petrichor and that we keep our wits about us so we do not needlessly slaughter those that harm us not." He might be at odds with Gloria but he clicks his tongue and surges the mount ahead, "Good to see you Officer Black," this to Merek, before he hurries the mare up toward Arianna, "Lady Stonewood. Had I known you had an interest in the woods, I would've invited you to ride with me before."

Merek does take his time to pray with Ailith as well, but once finished, he moves back to his scouting trek. If no one has any issues, he moves to the front of the line, and takes point for the time being.

Aiden smirks as Merek takes the point, not about to keep the enthusiastic guard from doing so. However, Aiden does drop back in the group, with excuses of looking for tracks and trails. He's on horse back so he can catch up when need be. He studies the trails and keeps his head on a swivel, turning his gaze up toward the forest trees as if trying to pick up on the sound of birds.... Are there birds twittering?

When Aiden addresses her she smiles brightly,"Well perhaps my fondness is newfound?" A wink is given before she slows her horse to move at his pace. She knew that Aiden was the forester here and would be able to guide them along safely. A peek is given to Ailith, a smile on her lips as she bows her head in her direction. "You...seem familiar. Have I seen you at the palace before?" Then a look is given to Eilonwy, offering her the same warmth as she did with the others.

The party continues into the forest with Merek taking point. At first it isn't very hard at all to figure out what direction they should be following, but they as travel deeper into the woods it gets more confusing. All the trees look the same and they could be going in circles for all Arianna and Merek know. Luckily Aiden, Eilonwy and Ailith are able to keep their bearings and guide the party. Aiden seems especially skilled at this.

The forest shows the signs of Brand's presence and the battle. Many of the trees are in bad shape and much of the land has been trampled. The work being down to improve and restore the forest is evident. One can see new dirt that has been laid down and new plants tended to, but the soon to be excepted arrival of winter has effected this process too. The land is getting a bit cold to accept new life.

Merek continues to move on with the other folk, while he takes his time to look around a bit. He seems to be wary about all things, watchful. Others can guide all of them through, he just wants to see anything that doesn't seem right in the forest. He frowns a bit as he looks from beneath his hood, "Hmm." He reaches down to check the dirt and examines it.

Ailith checked perception + survival at difficulty 15, rolling 1 lower.

Watching the prayer, Eilonwy swings into the saddle as she looks to the forest and murmurs one of her own to the spirits. She clicks her tongue to her pony and they settle in to one side of the group. Like Aiden she is constantly looking about for signs of things amiss. Arianna snags her attention and she shakes her head. "Too rich for the likes of me, my lady. I keep to the trees." She offers. "Trees make more sense than people most days." The damage makes her frown. "Brand burned the woods I lived in too."

Ailith hadn't heard the horse's clips and clops until the Prince resoundingly spoke. His request is met with a solemn smile, accompanied by a respectful bow. "If you wish. Gloria has traditionally been for soldiers on patrols. But I had said prayers to Petrichor for safe passage as we enter the wood before arriving." Seems she may have gone down the line of gods every morning. Her head turns to Arianna, nodding quietly. "Yes," is clipped in answering. Attention now given to moving through the forest.

Arianna takes in the surroundings with a bit of a somber expression. The Gray Forest was her home, and while she and the rest of Stonewood had assisted in healing the Blight, the devastation was still sad to see. Sighing she hangs her head, feeling as if there was perhaps something she might have been able to do better. Though Eilonwy's response to her look brings a smirk to her lips. "That's quite funny, because trees /do/ have personality. I can see the faces in them sometimes. Like people make shapes from the stars."

Aiden is bringing up the rear, though his attention swivels and he looks a little loose around the shoulders. The remains of the trees has him furrowing his brows and adding to the group, "The Lodge is taking strides in seeing all this restored, but it will take years... unfortunately." He draws out a parchment from his tunic and begins to scribe something quickly on the page, mapping with a few quick flicks of his silver eyes to mark out various reference points. To respond to Arianna, he nods, "Perhaps we'll go again soon." There is a polite address to that as he settles back on the red dun and keeps her walking slowly, so that more notes can be made before he tucks the parchment back inside his tunic. "How're you doing up there Merek? Keep us going that way-" he nods with a flick of his hand, so they don't get turned around.

"They feel, just as much as people do." Eilonwy nods, a little preoccupied with watching around them. "They know things, see things-the trees do." she sighs a little wistfully. "Makes you miss when it was safe to live outside the city."

Everyone save for Ailith is able to notice that the forest is quieter than it should be. It is not absolutely silent, but there are fewer animals and such about. This could be form the lingering effects of Brand. The forest is recovering, but it is not recovered fully.

Aiden checked command + leadership at difficulty 15, rolling 15 higher.

Aiden's attention settles on Eilonwy, canting his head as he listens to her speak of the trees as if they're alive. Though he would likely bring up the matter, he chooses to keep riding in the back. His eyes drift toward the lifeless forms of the blighted trees, the silence creeping up on them like a palpable beast. He starts to turn a little more in his saddle, his own conversation dies off. Nothing more is said as he begins to listen. Until he offers with a spike of confidence in his voice, "Everyone, be alert."

"Time and care will heal the wounds," Ailith murmurs. There's a moment spent to briefly glance about the forest, movements slowing.

"I wasn't alert before, thanks," Merek tells Aiden, with a small frown upon his face. He's perhaps the most paranoid here for now, while he looks from beneath his hood and then continues to search around a bit. He seems to be seeking for something in specific, perhaps old weapons or metal that were from the battle he can see around for now.

A subtle pout touches the woman's look, the trees had never spoken to her. What kind of bullshit was that? Arianna was sure that it was because she was born and raised in the Lyceum. Then again, she had never really been much of an outdoors/huntsman type. In these moments she wished that she hadn't stayed within the city learning politics and commerce. It was little help out here. The young Lady relaxes in her saddle, allowing the horse to saunter along languidly.

The party continues through the forest and they are now a few hours out. The sun is fully risen and the morning is no longer new. Despite the quiet forest and the lingering effects of Brand, their scouting trip is uneventful. They are being followed and so far none in the party have noticed. Then there is a bird call *caw* *caw*. It is it a real bird sound?

Aiden's warning earns a nod from Eilonwy and she shakes herself from looking at the blighted trees. She draws her knife and settles it in her hand as they ride. She's starting to wonder if maybe this was a foolish idea. "The Horned God doesn't range this far south-does he?" She asks quietly.

The young Lady seems to stiffen for a moment, that didn't sound right. Not one bit. Arianna chuckles, pursing her lips to Aiden and shaking her head as she slowly puts a hand on the hilt of her redsteel blade. Quirking a brow, she begins to actively peer around her. Trying not to look as if she is unnerved when clearly her hackles are raised. "The chirping of birds, oh how I hate it in the morning when I'm trying to get those last dregs of sleep." A roll of the eyes as she sighs, those keen perceptions of hers continuing their survey of the treeline.

Merek takes a moment and reaches to his blade, which he frees from its sheathe. The flash of the light from the reflective quality of the weapon seems to show to those around, while he frowns a bit, "..." He's quiet a moment, and he shifts his cloak a bit, while he frowns at Eilonwy's words, "Right..."

What strikes Ailith more are the movements of her patrol companions. She follows suit to their tension -- being a supporting role in this venture. Her hand lingers near the knife sheathed at her hip while her eyes train on others and briefly out to the wood.

There's one thing about bringing along the bird prince that might give this party an edge -- he freaking knows when a bird call isn't real! There's a twist in his frame as he pivots the red dun around to meet the sound that's following them, "That was a good attempt at forgery, but that wasn't a real bird. I know birds when I hear them." He rolls off his bow from his shoulder and pivots it around, to check the string. "It seems like we're going to be meeting our mocking bird... soon." His eyes pivot, checking the shadows and noting the movements in the tree. "There-" he nods toward the trees, "40 feet. Alone. Archer. Male. Shav'arani by the looks of him, not much older than I am. Fleeing now..."

When Aiden points out the hidden warrior, the rest can make him out. About forty feet is a male Shav warrior who seems to be trying flee now that he has been noticed.

"Shav'arani doesn't make him our enemy." Eilonwy says quietly. Her dark eyes looking to the prince and past to the fleeing man. "We can ride him down and talk." She points out, the hand on her knife tensing.

"... Well, I think that was a scout. And I believe that we might have to meet more of his companions soon," Merek states, after Aiden points that out. He frowns a bit while he twirls his blade around a bit. "Still, he's not assailed us, so it's likely best to decide if we wait here, or turn back to the city." He looks to Eilonwy, "I doubt he'd enjoy that, to be honest. Especially with an armed Arvani contingent around."

Arianna laughs lightly at Eilonwy's suggestion. "We're not here as a diplomatic envoy. Truly we have two choices. We can continue on and hope that he doesn't come back with his fellows looking to rob us or worse. Or..." She turns to look behind them,"We can turn back. Riding after him might be exactly the thing that leads us into an ambush." Everyone seems to be on edge, but the young Voice of Stonewood seems cool as a cucumber.

"Where there is one, others are always nearby," Ailith says plainly, echoing Merek. Her chin lifts to study the Prince, waiting orders.

Aiden looks aside to Eilonwy, nodding in agreement and putting his bow upon his lap. "He could be warning his party up ahead that we're coming. You don't make bird calls simply out of whim. There are more around and we'll shortly find out if they're accommodating to conversation or not." The Grayson nods to Merek, "Indeed. I'd not pursue a man unless your intent was to clear the Gray Forest of Shav'arani..." He says that wryly, considering the atmosphere with a glance toward the damaged trees, then back to where the man left off, nodding to Arianna's words, "I believe either way, we're best to stick together. He was following us... which suggests he may have circled in behind us. I would have done that, as a scout. Your job as one, is not to lead the enemy back to your camp while spying on them."

Pressing her lips together, Eilonwy nods. "Woods have seen enough bloodshed. We could change course a bit, throw off his report?" she suggests after a moment and looks up to gage the sun's position with a squint.

"Question is Your Highness, do we defend here or break formation for higher ground?" Ailith wonders aloud.

Arianna shook her head,"If we dug in here the archers would pick us apart, we're too exposed." There was a moment's deliberation as she looks to Aiden. "We have to press on, sitting here is doing us no good and you have to assume that they've got this road covered. They saw us when we were coming here, and if they wanted to take us. They could have." Gesturing ahead,"I think we'll be fine, and we have protection. Merek, yourself and me can handle a few Shav'arvani. They're suffering from this Blight as well and wouldn't want to waste valuable men trying to take a few travelers."

Eilonowy notices that in the distance there are noises that sound like footfalls and it seems likely that others are starting to approach.

Aiden notices these footfalls and that they are the sound of many feet. He cannot tell exactly how many, but there must be more than two or even more than just a few people out there in the woods.

Arianna guesses that maybe a dozen or so are coming.

Merek is able to tell that they are falling out in a arch at a northernly direction from the party.

They are still at a distance, well beyond the fleeing single warrior.

Aiden considers Ailith's question, nodding, "They know we're were. We don't have the advantage of knowing where they are. If ... we are in fact, talking about a them. There's at least a second one out there, for the use of the bird call...." He shifts, considering the direction the Shav left off, "The advantage to staying is that we can clear this area quickly enough to hold ground. If they aren't intending to fight us, by dismounting we could show that we're willing to speak with them." He nods, "I would say--" His eyes regard Arianna, furrowing his brows... "Well, something's coming our way."

we're here*

Merek looks around a bit, while he frowns, and then listens, "... They're coming from the north" he states, while he twirls his blade in one hand, pointing to the treeline with his other. Seems he notices a lot when it comes to battle at times. "I don't think we can outrun them easily, but at the same time, I don't feel like fighting. Let's hope they want to talk then? I've slain giants and Bringers, I can hold them off if you all need time to flee and they aren't nice."

Of course, she wasn't wrong. The men up ahead were most likely not looking to share in tea and crumpets. Arianna draws her redsteel blade, not one to be taken unawares. "Well, there seems to be about a dozen up ahead. Really not much of an issue. The last time I was out this way, I took fifteen by myself without taking injury. I may be fierce but I'm not the best." There was a slightly teasing tone in her voice as she turned to look at Aiden and Merek. "Are you going to let a few Shav make you nervous? Come now we have good steel and your expert skills as an archer. I do happen to speak Northlands shav, and if it helps I am also a diplomat. If they're willing to talk we can talk but otherwise...." She lets the implications of her words linger in the air a moment. "Your call your highness. Your call."

"Right. Hold ground then and get back into the trees off the path... We'll have to keep aware of our flanks..." Aiden nods to Merek, then asks of the women, "Does anyone know the language?"

"Then we prepare." Ailith acknowledges the order and studies the area for best positioning -- almost with a trained soldier's eye who has faced impossible odds before. "If may do to have an archer in the tree, if any can remain undetected, should we welcome them first to talk." Or even to fight. Defensive line and that.

"I am from the north...and a shav. Well, formerly." Eilonwy says and tenses. Hearing they're from the north puts a pit in her belly. "Maybe I'll recognize one or two." The Thunderoak jokes grimly and slides off her pony slowly.

Aiden wields Eagle Strike, a Grayson Bow.

Arianna watches the young woman slide off her horse. Following suit in a moment of chivalry. "Eilonwy, I won't let you go alone." A warm smile is given as she pats the bitchy horse on the side of her head and saunters to the slight woman's side. "Besides, if you do know any of them. I'd love to meet some new associates, they seem the jovial outgoing type and not at /all/ murdery."

Aiden nods to Eilonwy, "Make a call in your language, one of greeting--" His eyes dart to Arianna and he shows a flicker of a frown, but he's paying attention to the party and dismounting from his horse. If he's nervous he's hiding it well. It seems he's more on point and focused, that subtle confidence leading the way with the Grayson blood backing him. "See what can be done to ensure they know we're not here to harm them."

The Shavs draw closer, about a dozen young warriors who all have weapons. The man who was fleeing joins up with his party and seems less frightened now that he is among the others. They are drawing simple bows and drawing close in their half circle like formation. It seems they are trained to work together or have done so in the past.

Merek takes a moment to look off in the direction where the Shavs are spreading out, and then takes his time to hold his blade in that twirl while he walks around on the outskirts of their own group, watching. "Probably best you do the speaking thing real fast like," he tells Eilonwy, while he chuckles a bit. He then takes his time to just look protective of the folk. Also, a twirling diamondplate blade generally is a good deterrent for most.

Aiden checked command + leadership at difficulty 15, rolling 20 higher.

"Merek-" Aiden snaps curtly toward the twirling diamondplate blade, "That probably isn't going to help our cause in being diplomatic..." He nods to the man's showy antics.

"Well, fuck." Eilonwy draws a breath to steal herself and trots a bit ahead of the group to yell out in her native tongue. She announces herself as a Thunderoak and calls out that they aren't looking for a fight but for news of the woods. She even draws off her cloak to hold up the Thunderoak symbol on the back for them to see.

Merek checked charm + etiquette at difficulty 15, rolling 10 higher.

Ailith shows no fear at the Shavs approach. A confident lift of her head meets their eyes, born out of Faith and experience. The Seraph-Healer stands ready to act, placed to the rear of their formation. "Gloria, steady our sword arms and Vellichor, guide us to speak well and be understood." Only a hand lingers at her hip, near the dagger, but she remains unassuming aside from height otherwise.

"Anyone who is familiar with battle will realize this is a defensive tactic," Merek offers to Aiden for a moment, and for all the showmanship, he doesn't seem like he's really desiring to hurt the Shav'Arvani. "Not to mention they outnumber us two to one, and they've not exactly fired on our position yet," he reminds. He continues to remain close to the group while he watches on. His hood is up, though it's obvious from his face that he's /likely/ Lycene to any on-lookers.

Aiden checked composure + diplomacy at difficulty 15, rolling 15 higher.

Arianna stands there, unmoving with a placid expression on her face. One would be hard pressed to even begin discerning just what she's thinking. Her eyes move from Eilonwy to the Shav and back to the others. Scanning the treeline on occasion to make sure they wouldn't be flanked. Taking a few steps foward to support the northlands girl in case the need arose, the Voice of Stonewood seems pretty intent on maintaining a neutral disposition. Even going so far as to sheathe her blade.

One of the Shav men draws closer to Eilonwy as she announces herself and calls out her greeting. He seems to struggle a bit with understanding until a second one chimes in. "She is speaking Northern lands Shav." He says in Crownlands Shav. Eilonwy and Arianna can understand a his words with some difficulty. "What are you are doing with them silks? They take you hostage or something? Ride closer, we will protect you. We are the Band of Boars."

"And also a good way to get their attention on exactly what they desire from us-" Aiden retorts in kind.

Merek does not speak the language that the others do, and for now he contents to just answer Aiden, "Yes, I get your point, but I'd rather them see us with a weapon than think we're idiots and assail us because we're being so diplomatic that no one bothers to even have a weapon in hand," he admits. "Besides, we don't know what they desire as of the moment," he adds. He lowers his blade to his side, but does not sheathe it for now.

"Well, they aren't northerners-good news-I guess. Band of Boars, they're called." Eilonwy tells her party and makes a face as she walks closer to the Shav speaker. "The Northern silks gave me shelter when Tolamar Brand burned my tribe. The Horned God hunts in my woods. What news is there here? How quiet are things?" She asks and takes her time with her words as the petite prodigal reattaches her cloak about her shoulders.

Aiden looks over toward Master Black, from his position in the thicket, since he was the archer here and had to ensure he wasn't taken out first by a blade, if they turned to violence. Merek's decision to lower his blade earns a nod from the Prince, who is not about to banter further than he has over the matter and give away his position. He doesn't understand the conversation going on with the women and decides to await with his shoulder shielded behind a tree trunk.

Arianna peeks over her shoulder to Merek and the others, speaking in a quiet tone. "They're currently under the assumption that we've taken Eilonwy captive. So, sheathe your weapon. They're just trying to figure out what we're doing here." Then she raises her hands and shakes her head,"Then again, Officer Merek do as you will but if you're looking for the hard way. That is definitely putting them on edge." Arianna leans close to Eilonwy and whispers a few words to her in a hushed tone.

Ailith offers, "We could let them know we seek to heal the forest -- or rather are attempting to restore it. We may have the same goal if they're using the woods as a home."

"I do not desire to take life, but I've lost much, too much..." Merek tells Arianna after a moment, and he leaves it at that, while he then sheathes his blade in either case. He takes the cigar he was smoking and inhales from it, as he shifts it around with his tongue, and watches the Shavs speak with Eilonwy.

Aiden checked dexterity + stealth at difficulty 15, rolling 1 lower.

The one man one who spoke looks upon Eilonwy with cynicism as she speaks. "Shelter? Shelter at what price?" He says, still speaking in Crownlands Shav. "Do you know how many of our people they have killed? Do you know how little value the life of Shav has to them? Things are rough, but not so rough you need to go live with with those scum. Things are not quiet. The animals are going wild. People are fighting over food, but the Band of Boars is strong. We will give yo protection from the animals. Hunt food for you. Leave the silks." He says, rambling on in a way that sounds rather idealistic and even hopeful. He seems to be sincerely trying to woo Eilonwy over.

The other men continue forward in their half circle and their bows are are drawn. Another Shav speaks out in the common language. It seems at least one of them can speak their tongue. "You don't want to continue, the wood is dangerous. Give is a small tax for entering our area of the forest and turn back now." He worns. He seems to struggle wit the language.

There's little that Aiden can do, other than watch their six and ensure they don't get entirely surrounded. The semi-circle was enough after all, to worry over. He continues to watch the interactions and for now, remains silent, keeping behind the tree with his bow out of sight. He might not be entirely out of sight, but... then again the scout knew how many were with their party.

Although the young Lady of Stonewood wished to interject, she didn't want to step on Eilonwy's toes. Arianna had faith that she might be able to work something out yet. It doesn't stop her from speaking in Northlands shav and asking in turn,"How much is this tax? 100 silver?" Her expression is still neutral and unyielding, and although she might be a silk. The young woman wields the tongue with the savvy of a native. "We're just passing through and if the forest is dangerous, good. We can help with that. None of us here have spilled any Shav'arvani blood and we don't wish to start now. So if you'd be so kind as to take the silver and let us continue on to our untimely demise. That would be most delightful."

Merek takes a moment to take his cigar out of his mouth, and looks to the one asking for a toll. He rubs at his chin under his scarf a little bit, and then wonders, "Ya, sure," he mutters, while he takes a small coin-filled pouch and hands that off to the Shav which asked for it. "Not like I need it much either way," he admits. It numbers in about 1,000. A nice sum.

Ailith shows no reaction to what Arianna said. None.

While Aiden's face shows disdain at the whole tax part, considering this was Crownlands and he was well, GRAYSON, he has enough sense to keep himself quiet through the others forking over their money. "This is the King's wood," he reminds them quietly enough.

Continuing in her tongue after a look back, Eilonwy does seem to be considering it. "Well, they're changing, more of us move into the city when Brand comes, and they see we're like them at the core, like trees, same rings, just different bark and leaves." She looks past. "They want to heal the forest, it matters to them too, will you let us pass, or ride with us to see these silks are different?" She asks louder and looks to the men's faces.

Aiden adds with a clearing of his throat, "You might not want to encourage banditry in the King's forest..." Grumble grumble.

Arianna sighs,"Aiden this is my home too. Literally, Stonewood lies right smack in the middle of the Gray Forest. These are honest folk looking for relief donations. Don't you want to provide these kind people with some relief?"

Aiden checked composure at difficulty 20, rolling 11 lower.

Aiden considers Arianna, "So you'll hand out silver everytime someone asks you to pay a tax? Lady Stonewood, I think you have to return to your tutors and learn the ways of fealty and the differences between banditry and donations..."

"Are there any women there?" Merek asks all of the sudden, and then gives any of them that are women a wink, "I can offer some relief aid," he admits, with a small fervent nod. Yes, this sounds like a good plan, why not. Flirting and paying the Shav tribes, sure. He's... Certainly a character, that's for sure.

Merek checked charm + seduction at difficulty 15, rolling 15 higher.

Ailith offers, "If it'll help -- if they have wounded, I can provide care so long as they permit future patrols safe passage. Many patrols are here to heal the wood or rid the wood of greater dangers." Protection of lands.

The Shav men seems quite pleased with the silver that is given to them. The more empathic might gather that they would rather collect coin than blood, although they probably won't shy away from taking a shot if push comes to shove. They are doing a lot of chest puffing out and the like right now, as young men can do. They might remind Aiden of avians trying to impress a potenial mate, claiming turf or frightening off their rivals. In short they seem rather normal.

The man speaking to Eilonwy looks toward her once again. "They are not changing. They are not different. Come with us or head back into the city with your Shav killing overloads and see how that works out." He says in Crownlands Shav. He really seems to want Eilonwy to come with, but he shows no signs of forcing the issue.

The others are seeming rather charmed. One smiles toward Arianna and looks so impressed. "I guess we won't stop you. "They might have stopped them, if they were less persuasive. "But it is very dangerous. Wolves and bears and boars are attacking. Even some rabbits have gone nuts and have really long teeth. Rabid rabbits. "He warns, soundingly oddly serious. The rest nod along. "Too dangerous, head back, thanks for the silver." The one who speaks the main language says so everyone can hear. He also seems charmed and Ailith gets a smile now. "Too dangerous, turn back for your own good." The warning seems sincerely intended.

The one among who can actually understand seems to be a bit older than the rest. He must be nearly thirty. He looks toward Ailith. "You can? My sister is sick, back at our camp. We have injured too. Lots." He sounds pleading now.

One of the men seems a bit moved by Merek's charm. His cheeks warm with a pink hue and he gives Merek this coy smile that touches his brown eyes. He is handsome too.

Merek watches as the folk seem to be about their business and satisfied with the coin. He doesn't seem bothered by having less, twirling the cigar with his tongue, and watching Ailith and the others, "I doubt there will be much banditry if we start tending their sick and assisting them," he tells Aiden aside, with a frown, "The Tribes do have honour, I think," he motions to Ailith, "They will honor any agreement with her for aiding the ill and sick." He seems sure of this. He looks at the handsome Shav man and grins.

Ailith purses her lips together before an abrupt laugh escapes. "We've been told before of dangers and faced them as have your people." A gesture to the harshness of the woods. Solemnly, she speaks in a calm manner, pitched steady and composed for a Seraph or rather herself given history, "And still they have not deterred either of us. What are these specific dangers? And my heart goes to your sick." She glances back at Aiden, then to the Shav. "I am willing to lend aid but an agreement should be honored."

Aiden is remaining behind the tree and watches the silver trade into Shav hands with a furrowing of his brow. He is not against donations but he is not going to support banditry either. He reaches for the reins of his horse with the anger in his eyes, "I'm returning to the city. I will be informing the Crown that there are shav'arni in our woods charging taxes they're not entitled too in any shape or form. If they desire aid, they will need to bend knee to the King. Tell the Band of Boars that this is land that belongs to our King. They will need to give Fealty to remain. Otherwise, I'm sure the King will make arrangements to ensure no more improper taxes are collected." With that, the Grayson mounts up on his red dun.

Looking to Arianna a moment, Eilonwy steps closer to her new Band of Boar friend. "I can't." She tells him and adds more words quietly to him. To her party Eilonwy looks pained at Aiden's words. "They defend this area where no soldiers dwell, Prince. They likely need the silver for medicine for their injured."

The man speaking with Ailith turns to his companions and explains that she is a healer who offered to help their people. He is the only one who can understand Aiden's words and he seems deeply concerned. He doesn't share this information with the others yet. Why doesn't he? Maybe he really wants that healing.

The man speaking with Eilonwy murmurs back softly to her, whispering something.

Arianna makes a playful pouty face as she looks at Aiden,"Oh your highness, have a heart." Then it turns into a shit eating grin as she saunters over to the men, showing no sign of hostility and no fear that she might be harmed. Then she gets into an animated conversation with them, which is really her exchanging stories about the silks. See, the girl had been living in the Lower Boroughs for some time and she had a way with the downtrodden and disadvantaged, she was one of the people and despite the trappings of wealth - she cared a great deal and had a sailor's sense of humor. With her good looks, perhaps they'd be more amicable in her lands as well.

Ailith speaks louder. "Prince Aiden, you'd do greater service to the Crown to hear this arrangement out until the end. Or do you wish to add more blood to Petrichor's forest? There's no harm in negotiating and presenting possibilities to His Majesty."

Merek notices the tension and then looks over his shoulder, towards Aiden. There's a frown after a moment while he adjusts his cloak, then he shakes his head a bit, "And what will the Crown do for them once they bend knee? Many won't want to leave their tribes, their villages, I've seen how they're treated when they move to Arx... Would you let them peace it out here if they did?" he asks. He twirls his cigar around with his tongue more in thought. It seems everyone else also wants happy Abandoned folk! For now he decides to watch and consider while the talk of healing possibly goes down.

Aiden twists the reins in his hand as he settles on his mount, bow in his hand, looking over the group and hearing Eilonwy, "Perhaps if they give fealty, they will be welcomed to defend the area." The red dun flicks her tale and he nudges the mount on the path. Silver eyes flash to Arianna, "These people can earn silver as everyone else does, those who have joined the Compact and taken donation through legitimate means, not by demanding Tax for our presence here when this is /Crownland./" The Grayson sits up in the saddle, "The people who have given that Oath are being deprived if this is allowed to carry. You may negotiate with them, but I suggest you convince them that being with the Compact is better for everyone's interests. Perhaps Lady Stonewood would take them on, personally."

Most of the men cannot understand Aiden's words, which is likely for the best. One can though. He looks toward Ailith, probably still wishing for that healing and then over to Aiden, seemingly torn. He manages to control himself and keeps from attacking the prince. "You will still look at our people?" He asks.

Stepping back, Eilonwy looks warmed at Merek's words about the Prodigals, for obvious reasons. "They said even the rabbits are attacking. Something is off, shouldn't we stay on mission? The woods are still plagued, Band of Boars or no Band of Boars."

Arianna adopted a warm smile to the Prince and bowed her head in a show of respect,"Conversations for a later date your highness but the wisdom in your words is not lost on me. Of course I will do my best to promote a sense of compassion from the Crown as well as responsibility." She let the last word linger in the air before turning to the men, tapping her lips and leaning in conspiratorially. Easily slipping into the Northlands Shav,"Listen, the silk back there is insistent that this kind of behavior sends the wrong message. I know you all mean well and need to provide for your people. The lands have been less than generous in providing but where I come from there is plenty of land you can settle. Don't swear an Oath to the Compact or some shit like that. All I ask is that you put your trust in me, and allow me to help you and your people. There's good land, and plenty of work for those looking to make coin. Come on, let's show the silks we can figure the shit out between us Foresters eh? I won't even make you kneel. Just give me your word and trust in me as a fellow leader of men."

Aiden glanes to Merek, "Officer Merek, this situation would be like telling your Lord Commander that he shouldn't arrest the guys on the street harrassing old ladies in the street for a tax, because they're poor and their family needs it'..." He shakes his head, "I understand where your hearts are at, but this is going to set a precedent that can spread like wild fire. This is the Crownlands and must remain so. People are welcomed to live if they give Fealty to our King."

Merek looks up to Aiden for a moment, and it is obvious that his words do cause him to think about it. "I understand, but still all the same... If I had the power I'd see those in the Lower Boroughs and all the Tribes across the lands come together. Sometimes these circumstances are born from situations of birth that men have no control over." He looks up a little bit. He looks over to Arianna. And he looks to the man who can speak Arvani, "I'll do what I can to help your folk, along with the Seraph. This will all turn out for the best, don't you worry for a moment that it won't."

How open are your people to working with Lady Stonewood and Eilonwy?" she motions to the other women. "These are Crownlands. Your taxes start a precedent and the Crown cannot ignore that. Taxes need to end. And it would help if you explained more about the growing dangers in the woods." She glances over at Aiden briefly, then to the Shavs once more. "But as a measure of good faith, I am willing to look after your sick." Right now if the patrol is willing.

Those that speak Shav seem quite charmed by Arianna. The one who speaks the language of Compact seems very taken in with Ailith, even perhaps believing now that they should bend the knee. He looks over at the other Shav and then back to her. "I will talk to them." He says, but sounds worried about how that will go. He makes no move to return the money, but maybe convincing the others to do so would be difficult. Still he seems to believe her and to have faith in her. His eyes are bright with hope and even determination. He seems to trust her. "Our camp is this way." He says pointing toward the North. "I would be happy to take you there now. You should be safe from the wolves while you are with us." He says, all eager to tend to her. The Shav near Eilonowy continues to hover close by to her, also seemingly protective. If the party allows they will be escorted to the Shav camp.

Merek takes his time to adjust his belt, and then takes a drag from his cigar. He has no personal issue with continuing on with them in any case. He looks from beneath his hood and talks to the Shav which can speak Arvani, "You know, I come from around Tor, lotta beautiful flowers," he mentions idly, "I've seen many things in my travels. It always fascinates me, the traditions you folk hold. Would you mind sharing some about it while we walk?" he asks. He perhaps wants a fancy story, to share. He smiles a bit.

Aiden looks over toward Ailith and gives her an approving nod, supplicating to their desire to head to the Shav'arni camp to tend to the wounded. It seems he has nothing more to add and is willing to witness the negotiations until the end, as a Grayson Prince should.

Looking to Aiden, Eilonwy offers a hopeful smile. "We should go with them, your priestess is bringing them around. You'll see, we're good people, just different, we survived in different ways is all." She looks to Arianna then her Boar friend. She sticks cloes to the tall, new silk buddy of hers. "I wish I could join your tribe." She offers in shav to the man. "I couldn't live seeing the trouble come to your tribe that claimed mine. It's better I stay in the walls for now, until it's safe again."

The man looks over to Merek, giving a nod. "Oh, we have a few..." He says and starts to murmur softly to him.

Aiden considers Eilonwy, "I never stated that you weren't good people. I merely indicated that a party twice our size demanding taxes, is very well banditry in this kingdom..." His eyes flicker, "What was your name anyway?" Because he never did catch that. He seems to only faintly acknowledge Merek and Arianna, and will ride behind the group at present.

Ailith picks up her dropped pack and strides ahead. Gently, she explains to the common tongue speaking Shav, "If they have questions, Lady Stonewood is honorable and as you can see Eilonwy speaks truth of her experiences. If you cannot convince, let them alieve any concerns." There's a pause before a smile warms her expression -- lessening the hardened soldier tones. "I am Ailith. And you?"

Arianna offers a wink to Eilonwy, and gestures her ahead. Leading her horse by the reins as they head toward the camp. A grateful looking bow of her head is given to Ailith for her kind words. If the Voice of Stonewood noticed Aiden's chilly disposition - she didn't seem to mind.

They are lead through the forest, deeper and deeper. It seems they are some distance from their main camp. All of these Shavs are young and healthy. They make the trip just fine, despite it being a few hours. They mostly speak among themselves in Shav. As if aware that Arianna and Eilonwy can understand they don't reveal any true secrets. They chatter about life, girls they like, rabid animals they fought, how to spend the silver they just got and so forth.

The Shav who was speaking with Eilonowy stays protective of her, but there is nothing to protect her from at the moment. The one who was flirting with Merek, has all these smiles for him. The one who speaks Arvani talks to Merek about some of their customs.

Time passes and eventually they draw near to the a hidden forest camp which is about four hours from the start of the Gray forest.

Looking at Aiden when he asks for her name, Eilonwy smiles like sunshine. "Eilonwy Thunderoak, expert tree whisperer, decent scout, dreadful cook."

"Huh, well hidden," he states, while he takes his time to just relax for the moment. He draws out a flask of what's whiskey, and then hands it off to share with the Shavs walking with them, and the scouting party he's part of. Pretty much allowing everyone to get a nice drink. It's a Redrain style he has in his flask today.

"Aiden Grayson, Eilonwy... you make a fine translator," Aiden politely adds, using the time it takes to get to the Shav camp to pause and map a few things along the way, as well as lingering, entirely at the back of their party. He was there as an observer now, watching the Band interact with the patrol. Four hours was a long way out, but he was sure to jog down some references in case they had to flee quickly. He notes the time and the direction, squinting at the sun and doing quiet tasks typical of a ranging scout behind them. He's not much for conversation, especially with the tense conversation that sent them on this course. He pulls in rein of Lightfoot as she snorts and looks to the trees, "Don't move for your weapons..."

The Shavs like whiskey and they eagerly share the drink that Merek offers. One of the birdcalls, a fake call, as they draw closer to the camp. The female guardians start to look alert, peering toward the woods and trying to make out the arriving party. The ones in the trees keep their bows drawn.

Merek takes a moment to put out his cigar, and then draws out another one. This has a scent much like cloves and tabac, while he uses a striker to light it, then he twirls it around his tongue along with his piercing. He notices all the female warriors and then decides to relax for now. He allows the man that speaks Arvani to move ahead first, he remains with the flirty Shav, and motions to some of the women, with a nod. Definitely has his priorities straight. But he's not going for his weapons at least!

The pack on her back slowly slides off her shoulder as they enter the camp. Ailith focuses on where the injured are than the actual surroundings. "How long have they been like this?" she motions toward the pale, coughing ones than the physically injured from battles or accidents. She tries to access where she's most needed -- prioritizing patients and the full nature of exposure and so forth.

Arianna leans in close and utters a word to Eilonwy, as she pulls out a bolt of cloth and uses it to cover her mouth. No need to startle anyone but she wouldn't go out like that. The lithe young woman smiles to the female warriors, offering them a show of respect in their own traditions. The Voice wastes no time in going up to some of these bad ass female warriors to question them about the nature of the illness these people were suffering from.

Aiden had ridden his mount closer to Eilonwy for a time and something that she says makes his eyes widen and his interest heighten, but then he pulls back after a quick word, keeping from riding all the way into the camp, sort of staying on the outskirts. His eyes note what Arianna is doing, finding something on his person to mimic her. A handkerchief folded over his mouth will do. He doesn't yet dismount.

Merek decides though that flirting can wait, and moves with Ailith, "If you don't mind Seraph, I've some skill with medicine and alchemy, I believe I'll assist if you allow," he offers, and checks his belt for some basic medicinal supplies.

Looking about, this feels so close to home. Eilonwy sighs and takes her time looking about. "Oh, if there were more snow it'd be grand." She tells her protective friend. A few quiet words with Aiden claim her attention before she looks to the sick and injured. "This is from the forest, the animals?" She asks her Boar friend. Merek draws her eye. "Oh, you know alchemy too?"

Ailith breathes out steadily, a mission set. "If you could triage and check their bandages and medicines, I'll work on the ones over here." When she approaches, she calmly and kindly smiles when engaging any patient. The frantic would earn a soothing hum from the Seraph who aims to calm the nerves. Then she hears Eilonwy, "If you know alchemy, too, please check their supplies. See if any have spoiled or better can be made."

Ailith does all the preparations and care as learned from the Physicians and Mercies.

The party draws into the camp, while in the company of the Band of Boars they are allowed. Maybe the whole tribe is this band or maybe it is just his pack of young men, it is hard to tell for certain. Either way the small camp seems to include their kin. There are physical traits in common. They tend to be slightly shorter than average, have brown hair, brown eyes and with tanned skin. That is a tendency and not a rule, there are a few with red or black hair. There are also a few with blue eyes. The camp seems wary of the visitors and some even try to hide. The very youngest are more curious than frightened and some of the kids have smiles and waves. They appear to be normal humans, although many are not sick. Not all are though.

The women warriors seem protective and wary. They seem to have a sense of duty, suggesting this his their calling or their path to protect those at home.

Ailith and Merek close upon injured and sick more closely. They notice one female warrior with a bite wound who is laying in her hut with the door open. They will also notice a few others with old battle injuries. These are a fighting people. There about ten or so people of a varying ages and sexes who are pale and sickly in a way that suggests some infectious illness.

The Shav who speaks Arvani says. "They started to get sick last week. The wolves also attacked us recently. We are in rough shape. My mother is there." She says, pointing to sickly woman. "My sister there." He says, pointing tot he woman with the bite wound.

Merek moves to the woman with the bite wound, while he decides to check on it, "That looks bad," he mentions, while he looks over to Ailith. He pulls out a roll of bandages and some herb-soaked things. Really, what does he /not/ keep in his belt. "This should help with that, let me go and check something real quick with the other ill." He also takes a vial out, and a bottle, and pours a small bit into the vial before he hands it to Ailith. "This is from Blancbier, one of their best medicines, it should help her," he states. Then he moves out, his face covered with his scarf, though cigar still being puffed on, while he takes his time to look around, "You all have a camp fire I can use?"

Eilonwy will do as Ailith bids. She looks to her friend. "Where are your supplies kept, I'd like to check them over please?" She asks in Northern shav. A hand lifts to scrub her curls back from her face.

Arianna is no healer and though she wishes to help the people here, she put her faith in Ailith and Merek and the Royal Highness. Watching them do their thing she decided standing around wouldn't really help these people. Perhaps she could help them shore up their defenses? Or find out where these wolves were holed up? While she was not much of a huntress, if she could work with the other hunters within the camp, perhaps they might be able to deal with the creatures assailing this little encampment. Then again, they would return. These people needed to relocate. The young woman sighed, and went to speak with some of the Elders. Asking around until she could speak with the leadership.

The Shav near Eilonwy looks in her direction. "We have them in a few places." He starts to say in his native tongue. He points up to the trees, in the directions of one of the platforms. "We have much of the food there." He then turns gestures toward one of the huts. "Much of the other stuff is there."

Ailith drops to her knee in order to be at the wounded warrior's height -- though still fails being so tall. "Who first showed this illness?" is asked of the Arvani speaking Shav while she studies the injury on the woman. "Please let your sister know I am about to touch her and it may," she corrects, "will hurt. I need to look closer at the wound to see how deep and where cleaning is needed most before I can apply the medicine and bandages." A gentle thank you is given to Merek when she accepts the medicines, setting them to her side, well in reach.

The food isn't what Ailith asked about so she heads to the hut indicated instead with a smiled thanks. She's keen to follow Ailith's lead.

Said Eilonwy.

Merek settles in at a campfire, and then takes his time to heat up some water should there be some. He looks over to Eilonwy, "If you can find some herbs, I'd be grateful," he mentions after a moment, and then decides to start a brew there, while he takes his time to let Ailith do the illness checking and tending, while he seems to be working with some medicine making.

The Shav looks toward Ailith. "My brother. He is no longer with us." He says, seemingly troubled by that. He doesn't cry or anything. He has a kind of resigned acceptance. "He was the previous leader of the Band of Boars." He then kneels next to his sister, murmuring to his sister and explaining that Ailith intends to help.

Eilonowy is able to find their supplies that is rather basic stuff, but includes some herbal medicines and the like.

The Boar who befriend Eilonowy urges her to a hut with the kids. "Hide in there. We will take care of them. We have before."

"Lightfoot..." He looks back to the camp and all the people, knowing the patrol he came with aren't going to abandon the people, "Get out of here, but come back when the howling stops..." He whispers to the mare as he jumps off her back, grabs his gear and yells "GO!" And then he smacks her rump, sending her to take flight. He points to the others, "They're mean sons of the abyss! Ailith snatches up her pack and hurries to aid in moving the sick and injured -- if the Boars will permit. If not, she'll end up taking a defensive position with a knife outside the hut. "Gods be praised, let us stand strong against the dark."

{21The howling gets closer. The wolves will be here soon.

Looking at Merek, Eilonwy hands the bow back. "I only know my knife skills." She tells him and looks to the Boar for a moment before whirling to help Ailith with the sick and injured, deciding she can help protect them.

Merek takes a moment and places some blessed oil on his diamondplate blade, then he mutters a supplication, "Jayus, hear my cry, o' bless this metal, that its craftsmanship might hold and become one in my hand to strike down my enemies, o' Gloria, let my aim be swift to protect these folk, and to fight for honour and with glory in mind. Sentinel, let our minds be swift to strike true and pierce the veil of evil, Vellichor hear me, and bless us with the knowledge in guidance!" He then nods, "If anyone wants to use my crossbow, feel free."

"THEY'RE GETTING CLOSE" Aiden hollars toward the group, "The entire pack!" He prepares his quivar hitched to his hip and resting along his leg, nocking an arrow and trying to calm himself. "Gloria ... give me the strength you've given my brother... bless us!"

The howling gets even closer. The wolves will be here in mere moments.

The Shavs seem to be ready for combat. They have clearly been through this before. They also seem more than willing to accept the party's help. There is no talk of them being silks now. They are in survival mode and all help is accepted. Ailith is allowed to help tend to the sick and move them to huts. The huts are not all that safe, but at least they are not out in the open. The children are huddling and look fearful. A baby cries and is comforted by her mother. The mother is crying too, but silently so.

Arianna is suddenly regretting not picking up archery. As she eyes the others climbing into the trees she simply rolls her eyes and lowers into a feral crouch. Drawing the redsteel dagger that might as well be a short sword. Her eyes focus on the surrounding area while her ears perk up. A subtle prayer is offered to her chosen deity above all others with the hopes that they would hear her. A smile touches her lips none the less. If this was going to be the end, she would gladly go to the Queen of Endings and perhaps next time around she'd be lucky to never have to see another wolf.

Merek says, "'"

The small Thunderoak girl nods to Ailith and looks to the huts with the sick and the ones with the children trying to put herself between them so she can help with her high quality steel blade, it's likely the nicest thing she owns. She looks determined, quiet as she focuses on the sounds around her.

Ailith steadies herself for what's to arrive. "No fear shall overcome us. We are the light. We are the brave. We are the shield and sword. We WILL be vigilant against this dark. Gods on this day we will honor you." Faith strengthens her stated vows, clear and crisp. Her eyes dart to Eilonwy, nodding firmly to what was whispered. A line's drawn to protect those within the hut.

The wolves arrive and can be seen now. There is a pack of the creatures, about eight of them. They are very large, about the size of bears. Their fur is dark and matted. It glistens with this sickly greenish goo. Their eyes are red or yellow. They do not look like normal wolves. They howl toward those in the camp and look ready to pounce.

No more hollaring. The party could see them. Aiden Grayson, from his vantage point up in the trees, can see them. The leverage he gains from height make all the difference in sending off a series of arrows toward the wolves. The first arrow splits the air with a silent hiss and the loving twang of the bow string snapping back before he reloads and nocks another. The dexterity of it shows in the practice at the ramparts, the further lessons afterward taught him to better his aim, his scout master let him find the calm in his mind. The arrows find their target. The impact drives one of the wolves rolling... It's not dead, but it's seriously wounded. Aiden narrows his eyes and takes aim in rapid succession.

Merek watches as his rubicund arrow strikes one of the wolves, then he places that at his hip. Once the wolves are closer and archer fire seems to slow... He does something that he's well known for. Charging the lines. He rushes forward with a battle cry, "FOR THE GODS AND MEN!" he shouts, letting it ring out to where all the Shav'Arvani can hear. He then tries to launch in front of one of the wolves and twirls his diamondplate blade, before he motions the creature at him, "You and me, boy! FACE THE DEMON HUNTER!"

The wolves are getting ever closer and closer. The they in are range of the archers. Merek and Aiden are able to hit a wolf each, but the wolves are quite powerful and they remain standing. The archers Shavs in the trees are firing toward the wolves as well. Some of their arrows hit. The injured pack continues, ready to pounce on the village.

It's only seconds, but one has to appreciate the self titled heroics going on down below. The wolves are on the move and he pivots in the trees, having to rework his feet and duck around branches. It's hard work but he manages to send off another series of rubicund arrows from his rubicund Grayson bow, Eagle Strike. He spots Merek charging and starts to take position to watch his back, nocking and loosing as he can aim, making sure each one counts!

The wolves reach the village. Aiden's arrow hits. Merek's sword hits. The Shavs are in the fray fighting. Some in the trees and some on foot.

Ailith is no stranger to holding a line, standing ground with Eilonwy before the huts. Patience and Faith keep her in place and focused. Her fingers clench around the hilt of her dagger. "Steady," she whispers to herself. "Steady." The time nears when the wolves are upon them by the hut and strike she shall attempt.

The wolf in Aiden's line of sight goes down. The arrow hits it in a vital spot that all good huntsmen know. He watches it tumble and crash, closing his eyes with an exhaled expaseration, "Damn you Horned God...!" The Prince adjusts in the trees but he isn't about ready to leap down to the ground just yet, he's not that experienced to be risking himself against a vicious pack of eight .. well... seven.. maybe six... abyssal corrupted wolves. The arrows will keep raining down upon them.

Eilonwy seems to draw on Ailith's calm. Her eyes focused but her body relaxed rather than tensed as she holds her blade at the ready-at least until Aiden yells about the Horned God and guilt flashes across her face.

One of the wolves go from Aiden's and the Shav's arrows. Seven remain standing and are charging! They are pretty injured from Merek, the archers and the Shavs on the ground.

The young Lady of Stonewood can see the archers making quick work of the wolves. Rather than attack them outright, Arianna chose to shield any that the wolves might decide to go after. Interposing between the wolves in question and the poor soul who might otherwise be torn to pieces. Oddly, she doesn't have her weapon raised and seems to be less worried they will assail her. At least the calm disposition on her face seems to indicate as much.

Merek's blade flashes around while he takes a moment to slice his blade into the wolf. He then swings his foot out at it then and knocks it back, before he twirls his weapon around to defend now.

The seven wolves who are still standing attack. The one in melee with Merek bites at his sword arm, but Merek is able to partly evade the blow so that his bite is less secure and the injury while still moderate is not as deep as it would have been. One of the wolves charges toward the hut of the sick of and injured. Both Ailith and Eilonwy are guarding this hut, but it is the Northern girl who is attacked. Eilonwy is unable to evade the blow and the strike she takes is quite intense. The injury is serious and painful. She is bite deeply against her left side.

The other five wolves attack the Shav warriors on the ground, taking two of them down with bad bites. The cries of pain can be heard. The baby starts to cry again too. Even this infant knows things are really bad.

Arianna stands in front of some of the Shavs and interestingly the wolves do not attack her those she guards.

Merek takes a blow to his arm that tears into his skin and causes blood to come out. He then lets out a shout as he twirls around with his blade. It comes upwards and he beheads the wolf practically, before he looks back to those over at the hut getting assailed. He then decides to make a taunt, "Are you wolves too pathetic to fight those that are a CHALLENGE!?" he exclaims. Even as blood drips from him, he launches over towards the hut and the wolves there, rushing forward, hoping to catch attention of one or two more wolves. This man seems to be enraged by the bloodlust of battle, but there is a grace to it. All worry, all his previous emotions seem to be shielded. He is now the blade.

Eilowny is bit and she cries out. The northern shav wraps her arm around the wolf and drives her blade into it in turn because if she's going to bleed so will it. "Kill me and see how pleased your master is you fuckers." She growls at the wolf, determined to kill it for her pains.

Arianna narrows her eyes at the creatures as she asserts herself before them. Her heart pounded loudly in her chest but she stands her ground. Slender arms thrown wide as she stands there between the Shavs and the wolves who would do them harm. A slow smile touches her lips as she looks over her shoulder to the women and children. "Hey it's okay. See, I'll keep you safe. You have my word..." When she hears Eilonwy cry out, the Voice of Stonewood purses her lips and prays for the girl's safety. Trying to keep her eyes on the wolves in front of her and also search for the girls location. Seeing her do battle with the beasts brings a smirk to her lips. "Tough little lass..."

Survival of the fittest. That is what it comes down to, if the corruption didn't improperly balance nature... Aiden is cool poise. His stance is perfect, balanced between tree branches, his aim is deadly. At the increase of screams and the rise in panic, his silver eyes seem deadly focused, like that of a bird, narrowing in down the line of his sight, to the point of his rubicund arrow. Spotting the vicious attack on one of the Shav's on the ground fighting, his arrow turns toward the creature. His composure is relaxed, his need is great. The arrow is released with a defiantly hallowed sound, spinning through the air with a whirling hiss. With amazing precision, death comes quickly for one of the corrupted wolves and life for the shav who had been trapped underneath.

"Eilonwy!" shouts Ailith. Hearing the other cry signals the northern one still lives. Relief shown. Her blade swings at the wolf approaching but it's far, wide, and does little to no good. "Foul beast, you will not enter here." Her heels dig in to block the entry.

The wolves continue to avoid attacking Arianna and those she guards. They cannot reach anyone in the trees, including Aiden or the Shav Archers here. Two of the Shav warriors are laying on the ground and bleeding. They are not dead, but they are badly hurt. The wolf back is down to three. Normal wolves would flee, but these do not. Aiden takes down a wolf that is attacking one of the fallen Shav. He likely saved this Shav's life. Another is taken down by Merek. Merek taunts the wolves and that draws another to focus on him. The wolf on Eilonwy is still standing. It growls and looks ready to attack again. Ailith's words draw the creatures focus though. It might attack her instead.

The Prince looks toward the downed wolf and the Shav that crawls out from underneath it. His silver eyes then find the women. What he sees is something to remember but then there are the corruptions left lingering. Aiden watches the happenings of Master Black, watches how one wolf tries to sneak up and rush Merek. He releases another arrow with his gaze marking where the women are after he looses it.

Merek takes another one of those blows, but he manages to dodge enough that it cleaves against his side and draws blood there. He notices one is aiming for Ailith, and he looks to the one that was coming at him. He then sidesteps and shifts his blade to cleave, hiss, burn, into the one trying to take down Ailith and Eilonwy. He then stomps his foot down on it, and tells Eilonwy, "Finish it."

It was probably dead as soon as Merek stomped on it, but Eilonwy stabs it quickly, a few times just to be sure. Double tap. She looks up at Merek and nods grimly, looking for the next target.

The beady glare of the wolf is now fully in her sight. Ailith beckons it forward while noticing those behind approaching for the kill. "You do not scare me. You hold no power over me." A wild flailed swipe aims to strike the wolf but the movement exposes her body leading the wolf to leap. Claws tear at her side, slicing through the leathers. The strength of the blow knocks the Seraph down. Quickly, she grabs the nearest object and throws it at the wolf's face -- a pot.

Aiden descends from the tree once it's clear the pack was slaughtered down to one individual. The last distance he jumps down and lands promptly on his feet, but still falls to his knee with a hand drawn down to support and cushion it. He rises from the ground and flips his cloak back, watching intently, the Lady Stonewood.

Things are going well in this battle. It probably wouldn't have gone nearly as well if the patrol party was not here to help defend the camp this night. The wolf who attacked Ailith is taken down by pot and blades alike. Merek left himself open when he ran to defend the two ladies though. Aiden has hit back and shot that wolf, giving the animal a terrible injury. The Shavs attack as a unit and take down one of the other wolves. Now there is only one standing. It is going for Merek.

The young Lady puts her arms down and lets out a sigh of relief when the last of the wolves runs off to get dispatched by Merek. Closing her eyes for a moment, but turning back to look at the others and giving them a thumbs up and a wide grin. "See. Everything worked out great! Put your faith in me and I will keep you safe. Always." The kind of words any leader would hope to be able to say and also mean. Turning back to check on the others, Arianna peers about the surroundings. Wandering over to one of the fallen wolves and looking down on the thing with a mixture of sadness and something else. Perhaps regret?

Merek checked dexterity + brawl at difficulty 20, rolling 1 higher.

Ailith clutches a hand to her injured side and pushes upwards to her feet. There may have been an expletive snarked at the dead wolf akin to rotting where the sun don't shine. It's quick and quiet. She darts back to standing ground before the hut until a clear way is available to reach Eilonwy.

Ailith takes moderate damage.

Merek takes his free hand and then he uses his gauntlet'd hand to swing his fist and slams it clean into the face of the creature while the Shavs have laid into it. He then spins on his hip and does a sidekick to it, for good measure, then he twirls his blade and sheathes it, while he shifts his hands up and makes a maneuver to flick his fingers towards himself, watching it for a moment, then relaxing, while blood mattes his arm and side...

Two Shavs are badly injured on the ground. The rests are alright, largely thanks to the efforts of this patrol party. The Shavs will be quite friendly to those here, seeing them as heroes. They can probably convince them that bending the knee might be a good idea. Ailith, Eilonwy and Merek are injured. Aiden wasn't touched because of his tree. He is able to summon his horse back. There are seven dead wolves laying upon the ground. Arianna wasn't touched and neither were those she protected.

Arianna and Ailith will later start to feel sick, but that won't be for at least a day.

Lightfoot returns. The red dun snorts with panic still in her eyes. Aiden's hand draws up to her and soothes her, before he announces to the rest of the group, "I'll ride out ahead and send back help. Lady Stonewood, you might see about securing these people protection under you fealty now... They could do worse by staying out here." With that the Prince mounts up.

Merek takes his time to move and tend to the wounded once finished, including himself. He also will likely continue to flirt more later, however a bit more subdued, and assist in negotiations. For now, he must relax.

And with the promised deftness, the young man nudges Lightfoot off swiftly. He's uninjured and can make the journey faster than the others. The young man will be good to his word and see that Mercies and guard escort retrieve them... but all, wearing cloth wrapped around their faces.

Ailith waves to Aiden, asking, "If you could let Princess Sophie and Lady Eirene know of their conditions and that I will be seeing them soon?" Not waiting for an answer though, she moves about the encampment to tend to the injured. First is Eilonwy. "Do you consent?" is asked before any care is provided. She's faced many who'd brave it alone.

"I should leave this place." Eilonwy murmurs to Ailith and looks at her, ignoring her wounds. "I brought trouble here." She murmurs to the healer. "These people need your Mercies though, and soldiers to help with the sickness in the animals." She presses a hand to her side with a wince. "We need healers." She does an odd thing, making sure her blood is wiped up and nodding to Ailith.

The Lady Stonewood gives Aiden a small smile and a nod of her head. "I will do what I can. Perhaps after what they saw here and my charms, they might be amicable to bending the knee and joining as Prodigals. Depending on how many are here we might even begin to found a County beneath our House. Giving them some authority and incomes might sweeten the deal." With that being said she draws up her handkerchief again and begins to search for the leadership. Entering into what would no doubt be a long bout of negotiations and diplomacy. If they did bend the knee and join the Compact it would be a victory for House Stonewood and for the Graysons as a whole. Though the people who would benefit most would be these Shavs, that much was quite clear.

"What did you notice?" Ailith asks of Eilonwy. A vial is taken from her pack to splash on the wound, letting the liquid wash more of the blood. "And we'll do what we can, Crown permitting. But this illness is not," she glances at the camp, "it's different. Care and precautions are needed."

"I don't want to get into it." Eilonwy murmurs and lets Ailith work. "I hope they can fix things for this tribe, they're really nice."
