Triage 1

Malespero has recently engaged in a conflict against a clan of shav's who call themselves the Bloodoar and every conflict creates casualties. This scene tells the story of those medics who come and help the soldiers, sailors, civilians and shavs who get caught up in the chaos. Any rank of medic is welcome.

I have a maximum of two spots left.

Malespero forces have had the city of Onstan sieged for over a week by the time the battle itself begins and during that entire time there has been a small but steady trickle of minor injuries but all that changes once Malespero forces start going over the walls. In a matter of minutes it goes from being quiet, to busy, to overwhelming.

Four patients are brought in within seconds of each other.
The first has fallen off one of the walls and is a terrible mess. He would have a fairly high chance of survival if he could have the full attention of two medics for several hours but you don't have two medics to spare for several hours (Stabilisation @ daunting. Treatment @ 2 consecutive hard checks)
The second is an officer with a bad limp who seems anxious to get back out onto the field. He's important he insists (No stabilisation needed. Anyone can attempt to heal at normal)
The third has an arrow sticking out of his chest. He's still conscious but its grating against bone in a way that will become serious if left to long (Stabilise at normal. Heal at hard)
And the fourth is a soldier in serious risk of losing his leg. You can attempt to save that leg (two heals at hard.) or remove it (heal at normal). (stabilise at hard if leg is to be saved. Normal if it is not.)

After short deliberation with the other medics, Mabelle sets her path toward the man who fell off the wall. There is a lot of blood and likely some squished organs and a broken leg. Bones can wait. There is a some cleaning going on to try to find the source of the bleeding, unfortunately, she is forced to slide open his abdomen in less than reasonable conditions if she wants him to live. Performing well under pressure, Mabelle cuts, finds a bit of a squished kidney and removes it. He has two, he will live. He is also unconcious which makes it easier to do those things without him screaming. Once stitched back up, she sets up his leg and arm against some wooden pieces they brought with them from Arx and sends him to bed rest.

As the first of the patients make their way in, Eirene starts barking orders to the less experienced medics. Who goes where, what needs stabilizing. She leaves Miles and Mabelle to their choice since she knows their skill levels. "Him," she says, pointing to the man with the leg hacked nearly through. "My table, now."

The Riven trauma surgeon sets to work. "Get him whiskey and a stick to bite down on," she orders as she begins the process of cutting away damaged tissue with her alaricite scalpel flashing in the lane tern light. The clean cuts of the nigh on magic blade make this easier to prepare for deeper surgery.

Miles has been squinting beyond the cloth of the tent, tending here and there to the minor injuries and generally just giving everyone a hard time up until the influx of wounded. "Ah-ah," he gruffs at the limping officer. "You're fine, sit down and we'll get to you." He turns to the be'arrowed fellow, nudges him towards a bench and sets to work carefully manipulating the wound to free the barbs of the arrow tip from the deeper flesh. It's probably very unpleasant.

More patients come in as the battle to control the walls progresses. You now have the following waiting to be treated:
The first is the impatient officer with a bad limp who is getting frustrated and angry about being kept away from the fighting. (stabilisation at easy or heal at normal)
The second is the man impaled with an arrow that Miles has been working on. Thanks to Miles' efforts he's still conscious and as comfortable as can be for someone with an arrow sticking out of him. (Stabilise at normal. Heal at hard)
The third is the soldier with the terrible leg wound. Eirene has reduced the bleeding enough that its no longer quite so urgent. (Stabilise would be normal. Heal at hard).
The fourth is one of the Bloodoar nobles brought in by Ian. Both of them are a mess of sword wounds but the noble, Hosca, definitely looks the worse right now. Lots of stitching required. (Stabilise at easy. Treat at normal).
The fifth is one of the abandoned who's been terribly burnt down one side of his chest. He keeps crying out in Lycene shav and struggles enough that he might need restraining. (stabilise at normal. Heal at hard)
The sixth is a soldier with a horribly broken leg. (stabilise at normal. Heal at hard)

The only really obvious wound on Ian is a cut along his jaw that's long and bloody, but thin, probably the result of a very well-placed strike. There's a lot of blood, and it's on his face so that looks pretty grisly, but he doesn't seem fussed about it. "Come on, over here. If you fall over I can't carry you. Here." He takes a flask out of an inner pocket of his coat and hands it over to be consumed.

Ian isn't a trained doctor. It's clear from the way that he works and the work that he does that the beginning and ending of his medical training involves bandaging up wounds from combat such that they don't get too much worse. Fortunately, that is exactly what is required of him here. Somewhere along the way, he finds something he can use to put pressure on the wound to his face to get it to stop turning him into something out of a horror movie.

Mabelle mumbles to herself, "One down, fifty more to go", she looks around the field hospital and the screaming shav gets her attention. She doesnt speak Shav. She does have Frosthope though. Mabelle asks one of the nurses to hold him down for a moment before pouring some drops of frosthope to soothe his pain and maybe make him sleep so she can work. Once he's calm, she cools off his burns with some damp bandages and coats him entirely with salves to try to soothe the pain. Bandages are applied loosely to avoid pressing the area, but it is required to reduce the pain and protect the skin. "Do you have whiskey?", Mabelle shoots toward Eirene. For her. Its for her.

Eirene takes a moment to point her bloody scalpel at the officer. "Sit down. Shut the abyss up and be glad you can still walk," she says, almost angry. Mostly she's focused. With the wound cleaner and less traumatized, Eirene begins the process of applying broad stitches to train the flesh to knit while it heals, bandaging tightly to prevent further loss of blood but not so tight he loses the limb she worked hard to save. "You'll be able to walk," she promises the soldier, "but it will take time, just be patient," she says in her gravel rough voice. He's then moved to the ward to rehab.

Wordlessly, with a quick motion, Eirene has a junior pagen run Mabelle her bottle of 'medicinal liquor.

Miles glances briefly at the new wounded rolling through, and grits his teeth. At the howling, he stops and grunts and somehow /refrains/ from barking at the poor guy. "Once more, bite down," he murmurs, digging around to free up that caught barb.

The flow of patients slows a little as the walls come under Malespero control and the fight spreads into the city with only a single unconscious woman being carried into the tent. You now have the following waiting to be treated:

The first is the impatient officer with a bad limp who has stopped complaining and is now sitting with a drawn look on his face. (stabilisation at easy or heal at hard)
The second is the man impaled with an arrow that Miles has been working on. The arrow has proven to be stubbornly stuck. (Stabilise at hard. Heal at daunting)
The third is one of the Bloodoar nobles brought in by Ian. Ian has bandaged him enough to slow the bloodloss and keep it from becoming an emergency (Stabilise at easy. Treat at normal).
The fourth is a soldier with a horribly broken leg who came in earlier and is now unconscious. (stabilise at normal. Heal at daunting)
The fifth is a woman, almost certainly one of the abandoned civilians, who comes in unconscious. "She fell." explains the soldier who brought her in as he settles her onto a cot. A moment later and that soldier has gone. (stabilise at easy. Heal at normal)

Horsca has been a rather obedient prisoner so far and that doesn't change when Ian starts binding him up like a mummy. "I think they have bigger problems." he tells Ian dryly. "Go help. I won't run."

Mabelle checks intellect and medicine at normal. Mabelle is successful.

Ian checks perception and medicine at easy. Botch! Ian fails completely.

Miles checks intellect and medicine at hard. Miles is successful.

Things are too bloody at this point for Miles to risk much, so it's very slow going as he carefully, /carefully/ weaves that damn arrow barb around bone and flesh. He spares enough time to arch a brow at Ian and his new friend.

Eirene checks intellect and medicine at normal. Eirene is successful.

"Stay here." Ian puts a hand on Hosca's shoulder for a moment. "I'm going to try and get someone to look at you. I'm still willing to kill you if you give her trouble." And with that "comforting" thought, he ducks out of the tent just long enough to send someone running for his bag, and specifically the bottle of alcohol in his bag, and then returns to the officer. On his way back, he touches Eirene's arm and points him out. "That guy is going to need attention soon. I'll do what I can around here, but he surrendered honorably, and I'd rather he didn't die. He already knows I'll kill him if he makes trouble." And then he moves on to the officer. "This doesn't look too bad. Let's just... shit."

Ian gets Marquessa Marigold's Mint Madness from Oiled leather bag.

Eirene sees a civilian and goes to help the unconscious woman. Head wound from her fall. It's promptly bandaged and Eirene calls another healer over. "Get her into recovery and someone try to wake her up. Keep her awake when you do. Keep her talking." With that, it's time to try to help someone else.

Mabelle quickly sips her whiskey and runs toward the man with the broken leg. It looks a mess, apparently you can die from it. She begins to try to control the bleeding to prolong her options, for now.

The flow of patients has become a trickle as the fighting starts to end. Only a single soldier is brought in. You now have the following waiting to be treated:

The officer who came in with a bad limp (and a broken ankle) has started to fit and is in a major crisis. If he isn't treated by two people immediately he's done for (Two heals at daunting this round. More next round.)
The second is one of the Bloodoar nobles brought in by Ian. Ian has bandaged him enough to slow the bloodloss and keep it from becoming an emergency (Stabilise at easy. Treat at hard).
The third is the soldier with a horribly broken leg who is being tended by Mabelle. He is started to drift in and out of consciousness but his leg will have to be set soon if he is to live. (stabilise at normal. Heal at daunting)

The fourth is a Malespero soldier with his ear hanging half off and a stunned look in his eyes. (stabilise at easy. Heal at normal).

The fifth is the man with the arrow wound (stabilise at hard. Heal at daunting)

Mabelle checks intellect and medicine at daunting. Botch! Mabelle fails completely.

Eirene checks intellect and medicine at daunting. Botch! Eirene fails completely.

Ian checks luck and medicine at easy. Ian is successful.

Miles checks intellect and medicine at hard. Miles is successful.

Ian backs off as Eirene rushes in to deal with whatever the hell just happened; he knows when he's in over his head. He returns to Hosca to check on him.

Despite her best efforts to solve the issue with the broken leg . Well. They say you cannot die from a broken heart, but clearly you can die from a broken leg.

The overwhelming number of injuries start to take their toll when, despite every effort, the officer and one of the soldiers die from their injuries. Fortunately no new patients come into the tent who can't wait and you are left with only three patients:
The first is Horsca who is going a bit pale but still seems alert. (stabilise at easy. Treat at hard).
The second is the Malespero soldier with his ear hanging half off. He's starting to get confused. (stabilise at normal. Heal at hard).
The third is the poor guy who got a barbed arrow caught in the space between a bone and an important place. (Stabilise at hard. Heal at daunting).

Eirene grabs a fresh stick for the officer to bite down on. "I told you to be patient," she says through gritted teeth as she tries to figure it out. Bad blood, she surmises. There's an agonizing moment before he stops moving. Eirene scowls at his death but doesn't let it phase her. Next.

Eirene checks intellect and medicine at hard. Eirene marginally fails.

Ian checks luck and medicine at easy. Ian is successful.

Miles checks intellect and medicine at hard. Miles fails.

Mabelle finally reaches the arrow guy. She murmurs a few words to Eirene and they begin a very painstaking surgery on the man, finally able to remove the arrow without posing threat to his heart.

Miles swaps off with the arrow victim to handle the man with half an ear hanging off, tugging him down into a kneel to try and stop the bleeding. Blood soaks his leathers but he tries to keep focused.

As things become more difficult, Ian stays with Horsca, the man who surrendered to him, and thus the only one he really sees as his responsibility.

Eirene holds arrow patient down but she's not entirely got her head in the game. Dying men's screams will do that. She's pressing too hard.

Everyone is getting tired as the endless work to save people continues. Fortunately you are now down to only two serious patients:

There is Horsca, one of the Bloodoar nobles whom Ian seems to have a budding friendship with, who's sitting quietly whilst his bandages get more and more bloody. (heal at hard)
And there is the soldier with the bandaged ear who seems to be bleeding inside his skull. (heal at daunting)

Mabelle hands Eirene's flask back to her.

Mabelle checks intellect and medicine at hard. Mabelle is successful.

Eirene checks intellect and medicine at hard. Eirene fails.

Miles checks intellect and medicine at hard. Miles is successful.

Ian checks luck and medicine at normal. Ian is successful.

Mabelle steps toward Miles to see what is amiss with the ear guy. She tasks miles with the restitching of his ear while she tries to find the source of the skull bleeding, trying to elevate the pressure on his head by light piercing of the scalpal until it stops.

Eirene flies over to Horsca as the blood loss escalates. She is still off her game, and is focusing on the wrong things. Trying to bandage the lesser wounds instead of the big ones.

Ian has the advantage of KNOWING which the big wounds are, due to having been the person who caused them. Ian is nothing if not deliberate in his attacks. Maybe it's just having Eirene close by in case he really fucks up, but he finally has the confidence to do some actual doctoring. His face is bleeding again, but it still looks a lot worse than it is.

Miles keeps largely quiet and wears his usual scowling mask as he sets to work with stitching while Mabelle manages that head injury. He mutters a prayer.

Horsca recoils as Eirene starts being just a little overzealous, making a mess of his bandages and pulling wounds open in the process. He does apologise afterwards, even as he's trying to be all manly and not cry at the PAIN. Luckily, now that the crisis is over, and you've saved almost everyone who came under your scalpels, it does not take to long to finish treating Horsca and grab a few minutes of rest. The night is far from over - even those you saved today will need further care - but you've successfully dealt with everyone who is going to die right-now.
