With half my siblings being of southern lineage, I've long held some curiosity for the ways of our southern peoples. They try many things first, new foods, new wines, and the like. They were the first to bring us the design of the Caravel, of which there has been much debate lately. They likewise also, under the leadership of the Archduchess, brought us the first new great house in many lifetimes.

Now it seems they are adopting a system whereby leadership is granted based upon merits rather than lineage, a very novel idea indeed. It will be interesting to see how such ideas play out in the future, and who will be determined judge of these merits. Perhaps they shall one day send a box from town to town, inviting all who reside there to name who they believe best deserves noble title, so that we can be sure the people are in agreement.

Relationship Note on Aiden

In time I may find the strength to put to pen something that does the man better justice than this, but the wound is still fresh and this is all I find myself capable of.

When I gave my eye in service to the compact, Lord Aiden was there at my bedside. He had been thrust into leader a force beyond what he had been prepared for, due to another's abdication, but he still took the time to come and see the wounded.

He had been a good friend to my wife and I, and I found him to be a good and pleasant man. This is higher praise than it might appear at first, as the world is full of cruel men gripped with terrible ambition.

So I say again, that we have lost a good man, and we shall weep for him.

This whole Trade situation is just one giant knot of misery all around. I thought I would take pride in doing what I could to help, but at this point I just wish it were over.

Thankfully we have some surplus of goods at Stonehearth, and the river is open to trade with the city. The road through to Pridehall can carry a great deal as well, but can we get things upriver from Sanctum? We shall do our best.

Relationship Note on Arianna

I'm in a bit of continued surprise and disbelief still.

I sit here, an educated and supposedly dispassionate man, searching for the words to document the death of my sister.

In time perhaps I shall come up with something that is more befitting of historical value, but I am at almost a complete loss.

One thing does occur to me, however, and while I (of course ) do not smile at her passing, it does please me to believe that she might have thought this humorous as well, and so I shall record here that thought which entered my otherwise empty mind.

Get well soon.

Tutoring my brother when we can make the time. It's a slow process because of the lack of time, but progress is clearly being made. Cedar Vale prospers as never before, and I think we shall begin some more projects soon.

I want to make clear that you should not be using your grand finished ironwool to scrub your pots! It serves it's intended duty well as a protective material for those who do not wish to done steel or leather armor.

The cast-offs from the process of creating the ironwool, those bits do a dandy job scrubbing though, and are much cheaper to acquire while offering none of the protective capacity.

Buy them up and you may see the price of the finished product fall!

The armies are assembled and organized and movements begun. No enemy shall set foot in the Gray Forrest, nor take a drink from the Gray River, as long as any of us stand.

Relationship Note on Petal

While there were certainly worse wounds than mine to be had when the Gyre's accursed forces made landfall at Stormwall those four and a half years ago, I will admit to a certain injury to my pride with mine. Ariel always loved my eyes, and to have lost one was terrible in ways beyond my half-blindness.

For years I have had my share of eyepatches from healers or gifts from friends, and I have also at times experimented with not concealing the result of that attack. While I have gotten more comfortable doing so, I find that it can be unsettling to others lacking rugged constitutions.

I write now to inform that I shall accept no further gifts of this nature as I have been gifted such a patch now as to put all others to shame. The Tailor Petal Penrose was commissioned to produce for me the most exquisite patch! It is positively divine in craftsmanship and design. The Sigil of Stonewood is rendered in such detail with the stitch that I marvel at the work, so delicate the embroidery! I have, so far at least, experienced no discomfort despite hardly taking it off since I received it, and it is a sad truth to eyepatches that even after all these years they seem designed only to cause headaches. Not so with this masterpiece! Already I feel my mood improved and my tolerance for reading reinvigorated.

Petal has earned her great reputation and a customer for life. You readers of the morrow, be it a single year or a hundred, if this tailor's work should be available to you do not hesitate to obtain it.

I record here, as is our way, the completion of The Black Temple at Stonehearth. The temple itself had been completed for some time of course, but we've finished now what amounts to a small settlement around it now that we've completed some other projects and fought some wars... there were to be no further delays.

The Black Temple is, to my knowledge, the largest place of worship for The Thirteenth, but it is now supported with a hospital that specializes in diseases and influences of the abyssal sort. There is plenty of living space now for the clergy as well, and I've no doubt we shall see regular ships between Stonehearth and Arx now, filled with those who wish to wander the gardens of exotic flowers, herbs, and other plants. The apothecaries shall surely be busy here as well!

Construction takes so long, it is a lesson in patience. What can be drawn up in a day on the parchment seems to take ages upon ages to complete.

Perhaps I should increase the size of the workforce?

Between my wife and children residing at Stonehearth, that they may grow up as we have for generations, and my siblings all off to other houses, find ARx to be increasingly...

What's the word?

It's not lonely, not with a house full of servants, nor a city full of people from across the compact.

Yet it is all somehow still distant.

Construction projects always seem to cost more and take longer than planned.

Perhaps one day we'll have the minds, the tools, and the will to bring our ideas into reality under budget and ahead of schedule.

Perhaps.

Construction of the complex around the temple seems to progress slowly, though I suppose that's the way of it. When the digging happens, it seems to go in a rush, and then t seems to drag as foundations are laid. Walls go up and it's a hurry again, but now there's roofing and interior work to be done and it just seems as if they will never be finished with it all.

I suppose I'd be remiss no to also document congratulations for Lady Peri Seliki and her house. Her for her promotion, and the House for it's dedication to defending not only themselves, but the coasts of Arvum. I should really send a gift, but what sort of gift befits an Admiral?

Lady Joslyn is wed and advances in her life now as Countess-Consort Joslyn Rivenshari. It is always a bitter-sweet moment to have a member of one's house marry out, but as our diplomatic bonds grow stronger, so too do our people.
