Esoka

I rode in honor of Prince Barric Grayson, who would have become a Templar but for his death, this day. The joust was a bracing event, which I think my mount, the noble Dapperhoof, reveled in more than I did. His deft hooves and sharp reflexes managed to win us third place, and for that I give all honors to my horse. He is as steady a warhorse as one could hope for. And, if he loves to play for the crowd, I cannot deny him a the dramatics. It was fun!

As for Prince Barric, he was a man I had the honor of sparring with and rowing with and serving with on a mission a time or two. I found him to be as sturdy a blade as any the Compact had ever produced, a worthy wielder of Elvesbane. I think he would've served Gloria well, and mourn that both he and the Templars lost that chance. I shall be proud I knew him, if in some small capacity, and drink a toast to his memory.

Gently, Richard lais a hand on Reese's shoulder and squeezes lightly aa if to let her know, he will be there for her. But he also leans towards her. Apparently to speak privately to the Princess.

Fecundo arrives quietly, looking for where the jousting might be taking place., Helm tucked under one arm. He takes his time getting to where that might be, though has not greeted anyone or looked for anyone in particular.

Turo steps into the grounds and takes a moment to scan the assembled crowd. With a sharp nod to himself, he moves to take a seat in the nobles seating, near Alarissa.

"I've never much cared for children," Monique admits to Alaric with a wry smile rising to claim her lovely lips. "But lately, I've a newfound appreciation for those who do. I'm surprised it's only two languages, though," she adds, lightly teasing the Monarch who she stands near by. "Will you be competing, Your Majesty, in Prince Barric's honor?"

Ford has joined the Noble Seating.

Carita's arrival is a quiet one, her voice low as she and Coraline talk. She pauses to dip a deep and respectful curtsy for the King before she rises to make her way to the seating area.

Despite it being a tournament, Bliss the Champion does not seem to be dressed in any kind of battle raiment, her head turning instead to look at the jousting line with some amusement as she looks over it. She looks between the two sets of stands, then turns to the stands for the nobility, climbing her way up a few rows as she settles, her umbra gown pooling around her.

Esoka comes to the Proving Grounds, armed and armored in her typically knightly trappings, a solemnness in the brightness of her blue eyes. She's leading a proud courser horse, who seems far more interested in preening for the crowd than she does.

Sorrel arrives on horseback, on a slow moving sorrel colored mare who picks her steps carefully. She walks her mare over to where Corban sits, saluting him politely as one cannot really bow in greeting on horseback.

Waldemai is warming up for the event with a few of the more common chants. "Rats rats ree, hit him in the shield. Rats rats rass, hit him in the other shield."

Carita has joined the Noble Seating.

Corban spies Sorrel come in on top of her sorrel mare, bringing Rosie alongside so he can lift his lance in salute and then lean over to clap her on the shoulder in greeting. "Princess Sorrel. So good to see you. It wasn't since -- well. Since we last saw each other. How is the little one?" A little pre-joust chat.

Reese arrives at the gathering while close to Richard. She listens to his softly spoken words and nods in response to them. The princess is dressed like she normally is in her pink and ivory hood is drawn up over her ribboned locks. She seems to be in a somber mood.

Coraline has joined the Noble Seating.

Thesarin marches in, with his usual scowl on his face. He makes his way toward the seating--no armor and no arms except a sword at his hip. The Prodigal Count looks over the assembled, giving short nods toward Reese and Monique, and clapping a fist to his chest at the sight of Alaric.

As Cora arrives with Carita, she bows to the king and heads to the seating with Carita, a smile and wave for all those she recognizes although her smile is sad it is still real.

"Count Navegant." Alarissa turns her head, looking to him as he settles near the somber dressed blonde. She looks to others who have settled into the nobles seating then back to the man speaking quietly. "We will be having dinners for vassals at some point. I will make sure that an invitation is sent." There's a dip of her head before she looks back to the field in front.

"He's making every effort to get more mobile," Sorrel admits to Corban with good cheer, patting his hand as he clasps her on the shoulder. "Which makes him dangerous. He's also got an eye for sharp things. That kid is going to have a sword in his hands before there's time to blink." She laughs. "The real question is: one hand or two hands?"

"Symonesse says two is enough to start with, and naturally I defer to her thousands of years of idle musing on the subject," Alaric quips to Monique before grinning. "As far as the competition... well, Barric would have gotten a laugh out of it, wouldn't he? I'll admit that I might have had Thunder brought out just in case they needed another to round out the numbers. I'll have you know I'm not -entirely- hopeless at jousting. Or at least the riding part of it," he notes as he regally waves back to all the salutes and deferential gestures in passing from where he stands near the seating.

"Clearly one hand," says Sir Corban to Sorrel when she poses the question. "After all, how shall he carry a shield in the other, otherwise?" He has some clear views on these things, it appears. His spidey-sense pricks slightly when there is a mention that the King might be joining -- but he then shakes his head. No, couldn't be.

Reese looks over to Coraline, giving her a gentle and yet still somber smile of greeting. She then turns her attention to Alarissa, sucking in a soft breath and giving the Princess a polite nod. She doesn't smile, but her attention lingers for a moment and the nod seems more than a nod and very respectful. She notices Thesarin, nodding to the Count as well. She then looks toward Richard and starts toward the noble seating while walking along whatever pace he chooses.

Thesarin has joined the Noble Seating.

Reese's smile is returned gently as Cora settles into the seating.

Richard remains rather quiet, close to Reese's side. He performs a customary bow, as he sees new faces, introducing himself as "Lord Richard Wyrmguard." Then putting his hands behind his back as he stays close to Reese, but in a position that befits a knight: straight like a rigid pole of metal, and with hands behind his back.

Monique smiles in greeting at Thesarin's usual stoic arrival, with waves for Reese and Coraline as she spies the Princess' arrivals. "Count Riven, it is, as always, a pleasure to see you out. Remind me, I have a proposal for you, perhaps sometime later?" She turns back to Alaric, her smile a touch brighter. "I can't imagine you'd be hopeless at anything, Your Majesty, not the least of which jousting. I shall cheer you on most emphatically, if you decide to test Thunder in Prince Barric's memory." She leans in to murmur something lower, with a grin.

The last minute preparations have been set, someone is out getting the jousting field looking perfect, and Sabella Grayson stands up at what is usually the judges desk but it now a sort of podium for speakers. She claps her hands a few times to get everyone's attention. "Tonight we are here to celebrate the life of Sir Barric Grayson, a man who I think almost everyone here knew in one way or another. I was fortunate enough to have him for a cousin and have many fond memories of him playing all the games we'd all make up during our stays in Bastion. Always wanting to be the hero or the leader, he was constantly striving to be the best he could be. A complicated man who had just recently seemed to find himself and his true calling after much soul searching. I know that of his many titles I think we can all agree on one: Beloved. Barric was beloved by many and tonight while we cheer on those who ride in his memory I invite you to share stories of Barric and how he touched your lives. Remember him for the honorable Sword he was, the loving brother, affectionate friend, fiery defender of his beliefs. You can do so up here, for all to hear, or in quiet conversation amongst yourselves. Thank you all for coming to show his family and friends your support."

"Well, his father prefers the two hander, but I can put his father on his back in a spar quite readily," Sorrel says brightly to Corban, grinning broadly. "You know, Prince Barric never did get around to sparring with me. I suppose it shall have to wait until the next turn of the Wheel. He was a good man, and quite the sword arm. I'm sure I'd have lost."

Reese has joined the Noble Seating.

Salvatore picks his way into the busy grounds looking curious to see what is afoot. He seems curious to see what there is afoot. He searches for a seat as he listens to Sabella describe the late Barric and his impact on others.

Waldemai cheers for the jousters riding forward. "Hooray! Rah rah rah!

"'course, Lady Monique. When you'd care to speak." Thesarin gives Monique a low nod as he heads toward the seating, resting heavy on the boards. Reese and her companion get a studying look and a low nod, taking the measure of Richard from the look of it as he starts settling into the seats.

Seeing the wave from Monique, Cora returns it with a warm smile as well.

Reese checked composure at difficulty 15, rolling 10 lower.

While he did not rise in, Fecundo moves to a few attendants, holding onto a dark brown horse and speaks with them quietly before taking the reigns, patting the animal's neck softly, also speaking to the animal.

Esoka stands during Sabella's words about Barric, offering a knight's salute to it. Her eyes scan the crowd, seeking out Thesarin in the stands, then Reese, and keeping her arm raised to both of them before lowering it.

Jael arrives with a wicked black war stallion and several Laurent servants in tow. She stands silently next to the beast, a hand on his neck, while the opening remarks are made.

Monique breaks off from her quiet conversation with Alaric to look pained at something, and then to dip a quick, grateful nod of her flame-bright head to Thesarin's agreement.

Richard nods, "May you presevere, Princess." And that's all the man offers as he stays quiet and simply looking at how things unfold around him. Remaining quiet while looking at the others there, but his gaze only lands a short time on each person.

Isabelle, who is just so tired of everyone's nonsense leaves, following Niklas.

Once it seems like the crowd has settled after that initial introduction, Sabella speaks again, "If those who are looking to joust could line up over here," she gestures and then walks over to where the field has been tended. About halfway down the tilt is one of those training dummies from teh training center that's holding a bronze ring out on its stick arm. It's pretty big! And there are a few people standing by to replace that one should it be snagged so everyone gets a chance.

It takes Fecundo a moment to settle his steed, but once settled, his ride for the first ring seems very smooth, catching that larger ring with little effort and lifting the lance with the ring on it before moving around and queuing up for the next round.

Bliss has left the Noble Seating.

Reese is mounted upon her white war horse. She seems to be struggling a bit to control the wild horse. The Princess has better use of her lance and she manages to get a ring.

Reese has left the Noble Seating.

Stojan, the assistant, 3 Thrax Guards arrive, following Denica.

Esoka mounts and lines up, letting out a loud holler to serve as a sort of motivating war cry. Whether for her or her horse, unclear. Off they go, on their turn. The prodigal knight isn't a particularly showy rider, more built for workmanlike cavalry charges than parade fields. Her horse, however, /is/ showy, and he thunders forward with a lilting neigh, neck high as he and his rider head toward that bronze ring. The ring is nabbed! Her courser trots back to the line, taking his sweet time of it to play for the crowd. Esoka attempts to look dignified throughout his preening.

Sorrel rides out onto the field, towards the competitors' line, and she takes her turn tilting at the dummy, easily snagging the bronze ring that it holds, her little mare perfectly well behaved as she plays at being real cavalry.

Jael swings up on her stallion with graceful ease, and on the mark, thunders down the field in a black flash of compact muscle. She snags the ring without too much trouble, and wheels the horse around. As he trots back, she holds the lance up with the ring.

Thesarin brings his big eads together at a clap, and gives Esoka a sharp nod.

Alaric steers out Thunder, raising his lance to the crowd theatrically as he gets into place to start his run. "All right, cousin, this one's for you," he declares. "Hyah!" Thunder, of course, is ready to charge even despite the lack of things to crush underfoot, and despite the King's clear unfamiliarity with the lance he manages to get the timing of the drop close enough to tag the ring and get the benefit of the rebound to slip the point inside and carry it off.

Titus, a young wolfhound, Joan arrive, following Gaston.

Prince Biscuit, the seadog puppy arrives, following Helia.

Richard watches with rapt attention at the knights with their marvelous horses. As they get the rings. He claps at every rider who does their job. It is enthusiastic even if his expression remains rather serious at all times.

Well, you know how it is. Got to go get that -- brass ring. But it isn't THAT hard. Sir Corban waits until the King has done his run to bring Rosie up to the line. Need to make sure Alaric doesn't die and all. But once Thunder has cleared the line, Corban charges down the list. Steady. Steady. Right off the dummy. Easy as pie.

As the jousters return to the starting line a new training dummy is set up. This one has a slightly smaller silver ring on the end of one arm and one of the volunteers gives it's side a slap for each jouster's turn to send it spinning around and around, the silver glinting and flashing as it catches the lights of all the torches and lanterns set up. That thing can really spin!

Into the scene strolls Helia, though with a little less bounce in her steps than usual, since this isn't the sort of occasion where one ought to be shining with overt rays of joy. Dressed in her usual reds and violets, she meanders over to the refreshment table to get a mug of ale, then wanders over to a place where she can watch the jousting. Her eyes are wide as she watches the riders and the horsies do their jousty thing. She's nodding and bowing to anyone she knows with the respective levels of courtesy required to greet prince, princess, lord lady and commoner alike. Minding her Ps and Qs, certainly!

Obviously not used to the horse, this second turn around takes a little more doing for him, though the silver ring still does not prove difficult for him to acquire. As with the last ride, Fecundo silently raises his lance with the prize thereupon. Once again he maneuvers the steed into the queue for the following round.

Apparently content that Alaric won't kill himself, Corban is content to ride down the list even before His Majesty goes. Rosie seems to be greatly enjoying herself, what with all the other horses around and rings to get. So when she takes off at this run, it's with a real spring in her step. It makes it a piece of cake for Corban to steady his lance and pick off the ring, patting Rose's neck and telling her what a good girl she is when they come back around for the next round.

Reese seems to have a better handle on her pretty white filly now. She goes charging toward the next ring and captures one of the silver ones.

Jael turns her horse for another go, letting him rear up and hop a few times to get the wiggles out before directing him towards the silver ring. Again, it's an easy snag, and she lifts the lance high, letting her mount prance to his content.

Esoka is off again. Keeping a tighter hold on the reins this time. This is where her lack of flashy ridership starts to catch up with her, and she has to really focus to zero in on that smaller silver target. She and her mount manage to snag it, though. They trot back to the line of jousters in modest triumph, and have a good view to marvel at the other riders.

Alaric raises his lance again as he readies his second charge. Even if he seems to have stopped paying attention during the lance lessons after the 'which end do you hold' part, he seems determined to get by on sheer riding chutzpah and kicks Thunder into action with a shout. With a fierce grin of concentration, he tries to line up his lance and... whacks the spinning ring again, but -again- his luck manages to hold on and even if the silver ring does a wild hula-hoop-like spinny thing around the lance it stays on. He's still in it! He's probably not winning, though.

Sorrel almost loses her seating on her little mare, but she gets the ring through her lance by hook or by crook. It's a tricky ride, made trickier by the fact that she's also keeping an eye on the king, who seems like a slightly dangerous competitor.

The third round is set up as the jousters all ride, yet again, to the starting position. The same spinning dummy is set up, with a very small, like how does that even fit on the end of a lance kind of small, gold ring hanging from a ribbon. Then on the OTHER side, a plan wooden ring hangs from a ribbon of the same color. "This one is a little tougher," Sabella announces, "So jousters, make sure you get the right ring! I'd also like to ask for some volunteers from the crowd for the final round. You won't have to do anything too terrible, I promise! Just let me know if you'd like to participate."

A messenger arrives, delivering a message to Helia before departing.

Fecundo seems to have a little more control this time as he rides the course, the tip of the lance sliding snugly into the ring. He follows much the same pattern as he has for the past two rings, though a close look will show him blowing out a breath of relief as he rounds once again, looking at the setup for the final go.

Jael crouches low on her stallion's back, keen blue eyes fixed on the spinning target. At the lightest touch of her heels, the beast surges forward and...the gold ring rattles down the lance.

Corban seems dutifully impressed when -- really, against all odds -- the King isn't dead yet. Or, more likely, has fallen off of Thunder. But Rosie is eager for the next round, and when they bolt down the list it is a wild ride. It's more-challenging than it was in the past, but he snags the ring off the dummy all the same, only having to almost fall off his horse to make it sit just so.

Esoka looks daunted at that tiny gold ring. Her horse, however, does not. This is his /moment/. His time to shine. They spur forward and, workmanlike riding or not, they manage to hit that little target. Esoka hoists her lance, bearing its little gold ring, and lets out another of those high-pitched happy-screams. Her horse also neighs triumphantly. They are of one mind, when it comes to yelling.

Reese seems to be holding in there. She stays mounted on her filly, charges forward and with her pink lance is able to secure a gold ring.

The tiny gold ring is daunting. But not impossible. Not the best of riders, Sorrel slips a bit in the saddle in her excitement to get it, but she manages it, just barely, hooking it with the tip of her lance.

Alaric stands up in the saddle upon preparing for his third run, trying to pump himself and the crowd up as well before settling in. Patting the back of Thunder's head, he laughs. "I'm not going down -without- a ring," he declares brightly and instead of going down in a totally unqualified attempt at snagging the gold ring, he sets his sights for the wooden ring instead. The depth of his concentration might alarm people who have been watching him on hope-the-King-doesn't-fall-off-his-horse duty, but even as he rides the edge he stays on and with a whack of wood on wood, he comes away with his third ring. It's not the -real- ring, but the King is all bright smiles anyway. "Ha!" he declares triumphantly. "I didn't think I'd pull that one off."

For the last round the dummy is removed. Which is weird, right? Where are the rings coming from? And then there's Princess Denica, Princess Sabella, Lady Monique, and a handful of others standing on either side of the tilt lane, "For this final round you'll have to catch the rings as we toss them on your run!" She announces to the jousters with a smile, readying a ring in her hand. "As many as you can manage in one run! All right?" And then she gives a nod and rings start flying into the air!

Monique joins Sabella and Denica, handfuls of rings clutched in her grasp, a fierce, bright smile on her lovely lips. After a few quick murmurs, Denica seems surprised when she's called up to start throwing those rings, and so with a little smile towards Monique, Denica rises up and beside Monique she starts tossing those rings into the center. She doesn't do any fancy tricks, but she looks like she's enjoying watching the efforts of the jousters all the same.

Jael's horse likes the straightaway. Jael's does not like people throwing things at him, and while his rider sticks to him like a burr as he sidles, there are no rings caught.

Poor Rosie has NO IDEA what's going on for this last run. Doesn't she need to -- where's the dummy? -- is this? -- But while she charges down the list blindly, Corban just CONCENTRATES. Ignoring the flurry of rings, he seems to be trained on one of them. He picks out Princess Denica's two out of the air, smiling to himself as he comes to a run at the end. Ta-da.

Helia is overheard praising Grayson.

Reese darts around on her filly trying to catch the thrown rings. She is struggling a bit with riding, but her control of her lance is quite impressive. The Princess manages to catch some of those rings that go flying through the air.

Esoka takes a deep breath and just gives this contest over to her courser. Who is LOVING THIS. He /launches/ himself forth, dancing on his hooves through the rings. He puts on a more impressive show than his knight, truth be told, who just tries not to hit anyone and holds her lance up in hopes of catching something. Miraculously, she lands a ring. She gives her horse a pat on the neck as they nab it, in congratulations for his work.

Sorrel's horse is not amused by being pelted with rings. She takes one to the flank and it's all Sorrel can do to keep the mare from losing her composure at this. No rings are caught by her. She's too busy keeping the sorrel from misbehaving.

Richard still in that serious expresion, Richard speaks somewhat loudly, enough for Reese to hear him. "You are doing quite well, Princess. Keep it up. You are doing great."

Alaric regards the gauntlet of ring-throwers with a bit of a skeptical expression. "Aim for the pointy end!" he commands regally. "Or at least not at my head. Hyah!" Ironically enough, now that there are no stationary ring targets to aim for his lancework is actually impeccably spot-on steady. Unfortunately, since he's not actually adjusting to try and catch any of the flying rings they all just drop harmlessly. Thunder is happy, however, and actually having something to trample, even if it's just a random assortment of rings.

This is where riding a horse with which you are unfamiliar costs. Fecundo is not able to keep his steed calm enough to maintain a good focus with his weapon through the ride, and cannot garner any of the rings. He looks disappointed, but not terribly so as he rounds the line, leaning to try and calm the animal.

Isabelle, who is just so tired of everyone's nonsense arrives, following Niklas.

Ford has left the Noble Seating.

Sabella applauds for all of the jousters as they come to the end of their run and as the last one finishes she confers briefly with someone that appears to have been awarding points for each run. "All of our competitors tonight were wonderful and I'd like to thank them for participating in our memorial tournament. It's something I know that Sir Barric would have loved to have cheered on, if not participated himself. I have some tokens for the top three jousters tonight--Sir Corban, Lady Jael, and Dame Esoka, if you would please come see me once you've caught your breath and tethered your horses! Thank you all again. And please, feel free to partake of the refreshments and share your stories of Sir Barric and how he impacted your lives. I'll be joining you shortly."

"And thank you for our volunteers, Princess Denica, Lady Monique," and a couple of handy NPC names here! Sabella adds.

Monique applauds the winners, but her brightest cheers are for Alaric's showmanship. Clearly, that wins approval from the fiery-haired Greenmarch Lady. She dips her head to Sabella. "Thank you, Your Highness. It was wonderful and I appreciate being able to participate. I can practically hear Prince Barric laughing and calling my tosses unfair." And she turns to find a seat once more.

Monique is overheard praising Sabella: Hostess with the mostest!

Jael hands her horse's reins off to one of her grooms and lets the steed whuffle her hair for a moment before smoothing the dark braids and her riding skirts and making her way over to Sabella and dips a graceful curtsy.

Richard is overheard praising Reese: Great showmanship with her Filly. She did great.

Monique is overheard praising Alaric: It was a very huge weapon.

Gaston applauds the riders, but especially Corban and Jael. Large hands smack together noisily and two long fingers jam into his mouth to let out a piercing whistle.

Corban looks surprised as anyone when it is announced that he has not just placed in the top three of the jousters, but actually won the whole thing. He raises his lance to acknowledge the applause and then leans over to rub Rosie's neck, telling her what a good girl she is. Then he hands off the reins to a stablehand and hops off to go collect his prize.

Alongside Monique, Denica also applauds the winners, brightly dipping her head to them all. "Very brilliant showing," Denica smiles, looking to Sabella. "And thank you for giving me a chance to participate in my own small way," she beams, moving with Monique to find a seat with her.

Alarissa has left the Noble Seating.

Maxene, Pellinor, 4 Thrax Guards, Honey Snuggle, a Velenosian Angora cat leave, following Alarissa.

Reese lead her Filly back off the field and spends a few moments fussing over her and making sure the animal is well taken cre of. She then quickly makes her back to the noble seating.

Reese has joined the Noble Seating.

"You all did so well, I'm amazed at how you handled the horses and managed to nab those rings!" Sabella enthuses, giving a nod to Elizabetta who delivered wrapped parcels to Corban, Jael, and Esoka. "I think I probably would've fallen off trying to get on the horse and then called it a day. I feel like most people missing rings at the end was probably my fault. I have terrible aim."

Esoka catches her breath, looking rather shocked when her name is called up. Her horse does /not/ look shocked and neighs again, basking in the glow of the crowd's adoration. She raises her arm again, in another salute, as she strides over to collect her prize with Jael and Corban. "For Barric Grayson!" she shouts.

Niklas raises a hand when Esoka shouts and calls out, "To Sir Barric!"

Helia has left the Commoner Stands.

Prince Biscuit, the seadog puppy leaves, following Helia.

After applausding the winners, Fecundo leaves as quietly as he arrived, never having spoken to a soul.

Waldemai has left the Commoner Stands.

Jael takes her parcel carefully. "Thank you, Princess. Not at all, it was...invigorating." She offers a candle-lit smile to the other two, then calls out as well, "For Barric Grayson."

With the jousting finished, Waldemai wanders off in the direction of Southport Square.

"Barric Grayson," Thesarin joins in, serious and flat.

"For Barric!" Sabella echoes loudly, nodding her head down for a moment.

Rosie, the red roan war horse leaves, following Corban.

Alaric emerges from the stables after seeing Thunder given over to Tristan's stablehands and getting a quick clean-up from all the dust and such kicked up from the joust course. "That was fun," he observes to Zelda before taking in the grounds. "Thank you for everything, Prince Barric. You will be missed," he proclaims earnestly.

Alaric is overheard praising Sabella: A fine spectacle! Barric would have enjoyed it immensely.

"For Barric!" Sorrel calls, saluting. She nods politely to the king and to the hostess, and then she rides off.

Teonia Redreef, Aryka Wyrmfang, 3 Thrax Guards, Marquessa Pudding, a pudgy puppy leave, following Sorrel.
