On the Matter of Esra

Posted by Octavia on 02/19/18
I have received requests for the Court's position on the issues surrounding the death of Master Esra. Rather than reply in private, it is my will that the Court's positions always be public, if it have one.

On the crimes alleged: The Court has no position. A House has the Right to disown those they will, and the Faith has the duty to excommunicate those who stand opposed to the path of the Gods. The Court has neither the right nor authority to judge those actions.

On the death of Master Esra at the hands of Costas Voducce: Arxian legal tradition has long drawn a very clear line between murder, wrongful death, and death without fault.
The circumstances of Master Esra's death fall well short of murder. Citizens do have the authority to detain a lawbreaker and turn them over to the inquisition. When Master Esra drew steel against Master Costas, Master Costas was fully in his right to defend his life, even if that meant the death of another.

To the question of a wrongful death, I do not have information to make that determination, and the question is moot in any case, as Master Costas and House Malvici have elected to pay the fines that would be allotted by the court.

The determination of the High Inquisitor stands unchallenged. Sentinel's justice be done.
