Beyond the Reef

The gulf between traditionalists and progressives in the Mourning Isles has widened that much further after the latest Assembly of Peers. In recent years, House Redreef has become one of the most strident and aggressive voices for progressivism and abolition of thralldom within the Isles. This has made Redreef Shores and its Baroness, Ember, a particular political enemy of traditionalists. So of course, the elevation of Redreef Shores to county and of Ember to Countess has added yet more fuel to the fire. Gossip was quick to spread after members of House Dredcall walked out on the Assembly after Redreef's elevation. No threats have been thrown around in either direction, but positions are hardening on both sides. Progressives see the elevation of one of their own as a sign that that Compact will back them further still, and traditionalists see it as yet another careless trampling of the institutions that have been the backbone of the Isles and its culture for a thousand years. It's not just the "Ivan Helianthus was right" extremists or the "total thralldom abolition now" firebrands who are grumbling. More and more, people in the Isles who are in the center between the two points are starting to pick one side or the other, even if it's only in a furtive, "well, they make some good points" way.
