Description: Unremarkable in height and build, Jack still sticks out. His hair is a wild mess that defies gravity. His sports a mustache and scraggly beard that doesn't quite match. It looks at once like appearances mean nothing at all, and yet everything. Why else keep one's hair like that? Add to that well-dressed and a naturally agreeable face and Jack is a fairly good-looking man.
Personality: Agreeable and charming, Jack has learned to put on a pleasant face most of the time. It's the result of an academic negotiation of a less than perfect (or horribly flawed, depending on how many drinks he's had) world. It's easier to be charming than difficult, and easy is what he's after. Keep work light and short, keep obligations few, do only what needs to be done so that proper attention can be paid to the few things Jack actually cares about, which are almost exclusively related to medicine and academics.
Background: On his first birthday, Jack was dumped at a Shrine of Limerance near Sanctum. That it was at a Shrine and not in a river, or out in the woods, is the whole of the wealth and kindness the man inherited from his parents. Jack grew up an orphan, and that life taught him much of what he knows today. Be good, smile, learn who will help you, and take every opportunity you get. Even if it's less than ethical.
At age twelve, while walking past the local barber surgeon, Jack happened across a message that had failed to make it all the way into the mail box. Breaking the seal, he found that a young was scheduled to arrive in two weeks time to serve an apprenticeship. The poor lad's mother had taken ill, and the family could no longer afford to be without him. He and his family would have to, regretfully, forfeit this opportunity. Only, that message never arrived. Two weeks later Jack Bathwater - what sort of name is that? - arrived as he was scheduled to.
Luck would have it Jack was skilled with a blade. He was quite successful, and soon enough had gathered up enough silver and found a sponsor to send him to a proper medical academy. Jack perfected his art, and as he did, he moved into the sciences. Surgery and alchemy came easy to him, and coin was easy enough to earn, but the work became boring. He became fixed on the more obscure and stranger elements of science, which, sadly, did not pay.
And that's when Jack started playing cards. And dice. And anything else that could turn a quick profit, so he could continue to pay the rent on his apartment, and continue to buy up costly supplies. The addiction to curiosity (sure, we'll call it that) led Jack to going a little too far in... to debt, that is. Well-spoken and well-read wasn't enough to get Jack away from some very bad people who were set on ensuring he paid up.
Which is exactly when Jack decided he didn't really care for his freedom anyways. He called in his few remaining favors amongst the nobility, and ended up standing before the Duke of Westrock Reach, accepting the position of House Physician. Life's not so bad serving the nobility.
