A successful, if at times tumultuous meeting. I think there's going to be even more meetings coming up this week.

A shadow is hovering over the Compact, and few are willing to dispel it with the flame that is required. Wheat cannot thrive where brambles grow; the field must be cleansed with flame and scythe. I pray that nobility and commoners alike put their trust in the Faith, rather than in themselves.

The world is so much bigger than I ever imagined. It makes me feel so very small.

Book,

It has been good spending some time with my sister lately, now I just have to track that other sister down...Then my brother. A word to all, regardless of your differences, family, is family, and I challenge everyone to look past the trivial differences. To realize that the length of time you may have with those who share a connection with you at a core level may very well be much less than you desire. Love your family, forgive your family, protect your family.

Relationship Note on Asriel

Book,

Tonight I write on behalf of Lord Asriel Darkwater. Firstly, let me say that this man has quite the wit. He knows how to throw a good party. I consider it a privilege that this man calls me his patron. I can learn as much, perhaps more from him than he can from me. We are glad to have you in Arx my friend.

Truly, everyone owes it to themselves to make his acquaintance.

I was happy to be able to celebrate your birthday with you. I hope the coming year is the most amazing of yours yet!

Wise words. As ever, while I may be your patron, it is you who teaches me.

Some people show up late to dinner.

Others leave dinner early.

One hopes all enjoy the food, however.

Well. A bet is a bet. I reckon if a person gets sour-like over losing, they ought to not be the sort making them in the first place.

This'll be interesting, if it's anything.

I met some new cousins today. I suppose by rights they are Harlan's cousins. But that makes them mine, doesn't it?

Relationship Note on Joscelin

I can not imagine the Crafter's Guild lead by anyone but you, though I certainly don't begrudge you the reasons you wish to step down for. I'm /glad/ that your life is so full of love and home, things you always seemed to truly want, that it is time for a change. We are all fortunate beyond words for your leadership and passion. Herding cats is no small feat! I kid, mostly. You took something that was floundering and made it one of the strongest organizations in Arx, I think. To have served as one of your assistants has been a great honor and learning experience. You will be sorely, sorely missed.

PS - I don't want the job, for anyone reading. I was honored with a nomination many years ago along with Joscelin, and thought myself unfit for it. I still feel that way. Politics have never been something I dabble in or even enjoy; I am a simple woman. The leader of the Crafter's Guild should be someone capable and able to embrace those things; I wouldn't. I am honored if anyone might think me fit, but I assure you it would be a bad fit. I will happily continue as an assistant, should a new Guildmaster bestow such trust. If not, I will still consider myself lucky.

The knight I served under as a squire was named Sir Dax and he was very old. He was the only one who would take me under his wing, the others did not much believe in me. I was too bookish for some, too quiet for others, or not physically strong enough for a few.

He did, always, believe in me. Even when I was very silly. I remember when we first met, I was nine, and he sat across from me at a small table in his bulky old armor and he held his teacup very gently in his gauntlet-clad hand while I poured him a drink. He said,

"Thank you, Lady Lina." Then he asked, "Have you ever been afraid?"

"My mother once told me a story about a goblin who ate books. He ate them all up, page by page, and he would be very sneaky and hide in the chimney of the library so no one could catch him. Then at night, before the fire was made, he'd sneak out and hide and eat more books. This story is very scary to me. I was very afraid of our library at night after she told it."

"What did you do?"

"I was only a little afraid of the dark, because I do adore the stars, so I crept to the library one night and I took the iron from the fireplace rack and I stood in front of the hearth and waited for the goblin. I was only going to scare him, of course. I didn't want to bash him or anything. But he was being very bad and I knew I had to do something about it, even if I was afraid. My hands shook."

"What happened then?"

"I fell asleep in my watch, in front of the fireplace. But, of course, no books were eaten. My father carried me to the lounging chair and put a blanket over me. When I awoke, I counted them all. The books."

"You must have frightened him off!"

I leaned close and whispered to him conspiratorially, "Sir Dax, I do not believe there was truly a goblin. But if there was, just in case, I had to do something about it -- those books could not protect themselves, after all."

"/Squire/ Lina," he said with a smile that lifted his whiskers and I surely made a very wide-eyed face, "We shall see what kind of Oathlands knight you become some place down the road. For now, we have much work to do. Much work."

The cats went quick, though some of them might not have been my best work. I've felt distracted as of late and I guess it showed in my work today. The forge is usually my haven from distraction, so this is new. I'll have to try again tomorrow or next week, if only because I hate when the shop is unstocked.

Mm, love the feel of new contracts being signed. Hopefully, the couple of jobs I pick up for my men keep them busy as I spend most of next year going back and forth and getting other matters arranged.

It's a little out of my usual skill-set but the change is a little refreshing. Maybe, I can learn a new trick or two.
