A noble is best when people barely know that she exist; not so good when people obey and acclaim her; and worst when people despise her. A noble who fails to honor people shall never be honored. For the nation is most prosperous when the work is done, the aims fulfilled, and the people will take all the credit, not when its nobles scramble for the acknowledgment of having done their duty.

Sparring.

I should do this far more often. It lifts my spirits and lets me focus on other things. I don't have to worry about conversation so much as hitting a target and the mercies step in.

Send word if anyone wants to spar. I prefer to use the weapons provided by Laurent and leathers for armor.

Time seems to pass so quickly, and I find that all the things I want to do mostly still remain undone. I suppose that means if I still want to do them, it's time to pick them up again.

It appears the Marquis is not only a poet with numbers.

It was an honor to compete alongside him, Lady Liliana and Lord Vandorean in the Bard's college's contest.

Congratulations to the winners.

-- I should not have dipped into the whiskey, I know this Scholar. Wait, wait, are you having trouble breathing, Scholar - -

You're laughing at me. Please, note, that Scholar Einar laughed at my plight. It might have made me laugh too. Believe that I'm going to leave that vague enough so that if someone in another age from now gets bored enough to pick this up, they'll wonder if I laughed. Or not. Who knows? I'll make you wonder indefinitely, future bored person.

This week, I have spent some of my idle time wondering what I would like to make of myself, who should I be?

(Mostly while volunteering to muck out stables.)

Because of choice, because of freedom, because of will - because I was daydreaming - this is a very short list of various options:

* Drop everything, invent a new name (Susan) for myself, and run off to join a Kismet Carnival.

* Learn to sing (badly) and act (not as badly) and join the Mummers.

* Make an attempt to settle down (not yet.) Find a good political alliance with a nice lady (or lord) - or possibly a nice prince (or princess) who is far enough from the line of inheritance so that we can travel everywhere without needing to worry about duty or responsibilities.

* Become an actual Liberator. Godsworn to Skald.

* Become an actual member of the King's Own. I think I fight well enough to keep up with the Hundred. I think.

* Go feral, become a literal hedge-knight.

So, Scholar, it seems as there are folks out there as still think the Queen of Endings and Mother of Beginnings kills people.

I can't believe I've got to say this, but She doesn't.

People kill people. Animals kill people. Their own bodies kill people. The weather, the tide, the world around us, the things we make - all these things kill people. The Queen of Endings and Mother of Beginnings doesn't. When we've died, that's when She gathers our souls up and decides what to do with us. But really, looking at Her that way is looking at Her the wrong way round. It's natural - we all know we're going to die sometime - but where we tend to focus isn't where we really should.

See, She's the one who sent us out here to be people in the first place. The Mother of Beginnings takes a soul - whether it's one that's been round the Wheel before, or one that's brand shiny new on the Wheel - and she puts it in a body. She sends us out into the world and lets us live our lives, then gathers us up again when they're done. I don't know why - I'm not even Godsworn, never mind willing to suggest I can speak for Her - but that's what the Godsworn tell us She does.

Why would She end our lives, when She gave us them to start with?

Anyone know where Gildorians come from?

The easy bets would be Gildor or Gildoria, something of that nature. Whatever the name, I'm told it's a Kingdom.

Killed a few Gildorians of late with no damned idea where they come from, and I can hardly ask them, now.

Languages are fascinating. I believe I may have said this before, but that doesn't make it less than true. Perhaps one day they will bore me, but I somehow suspect that day is very far in the future. So many languages!

Monsters often make their victims believe that they are somehow responsible for their own fate.

The danger of tolerating any hurtful behavior is that it can all too quickly become the norm. If we allow ourselves to get away with anything we know to be destructive without taking responsibility for the gravity of what we have done, we are that much more likely to minimize the offense. And once the actions are justified, they are more likely to be repeated.

And not just by us, the violent; by them, the victim. Angry remarks or aggressive actions can both provoke and be used to justify retaliatory actions that may be more dangerous, like pushing and shoving someone down the stairs. And when that violence cannot be aimed at another, it is aimed at ourselves, until we are but a shell of what we once were.

I hate monsters.

It is a time of taking on responsibilities, it seems.

I visited Princess Alarissa Thrax's language night on Lady Monique Greenmarch's arm. After all, while I don't know a great many languages, I am a very expressive person with my eyes and face and body, and I was sure I could make do if needed.

I ended up at the Shav'arvani dialect table, where Lady Monique took charge, meeting old friends and new, alike.

Alas, as the Shav'arvani dialects were not terribly well known, Lady Monique and Elder Mirk Halfshav took upon themselves to teach us the very basics of the various dialects. They chose a single word, a very expressive one, so that we might witness the changes in the dialects, compare to the Arvani term, and start a thrilling journey on learning the basics of these tongues.

Or maybe that was just me. I am suspecting Lady Monique may also have had some pranksterous ideas in mind.

I'm glad our table ended up conversing in Arvani as well - however expressive I may be, words make it easier.

And thankfully, Lady Monique decreed my new responsibility in Arvani as well.

I am to arrange the Tournament of Thorns this year.

But Lady Monique has promised to act as one of my judges, at least.

(Oh, and fret not, it's a ways off yet - you will know when the time comes).

It is so satisfying hosting an event where the audience take to heart the spirit of the game, and honors Death with the most spectacular displays of showmanship, and truly inspiring lyrics.

I shall put together the song(s) into nice scrolls, send them to everyone participating, and of course leave some at the Shrine.
