With the Day of Vows coming to a close, I wanted to remind everyone to take a moment to acknowledge the bonds you have made through sworn word. Whether it is the little things like promising to make time to spend with someone, or the big things like marriages and oaths of fealty, these vows shape and define us in many ways, more than anything else.

For me, my vows are largely to myself, and so the Day usually ends up one of quiet contemplation and review. How well am I doing at holding up to them? Is my life oriented in the right direction? Am I making progress?

It is, of course, also a day to remember love. I have my own thoughts on that, but those are for letters, for Reflections, for personal conversations. It's a tricky one for me. But I can say that Limerance's presence is felt in my life, day in and out, in all it's myriad ways. My faith only deepens as I do my best to live up to my Devotion, and see the ripples this has in the rest of my life.

I had heard about this and thought it was a joke. This is really happening?

Perhaps I am the pot calling the kettle black because of my love of jousting and how a tilt can sometimes go horribly wrong, but this just sounds like asking for disaster to happen.

As an archer I am confused and disturbed at the idea of duels to first blood by arrow. Arrows are powered by momentum. If they score, they score hard. There is no weapon by training that I can think of less suited to honor duel.

I love the Champions and use their services happily but this is a concerning idea.

I'll be honest, I've never fully understood why some ruling nobles wouldn't want to be friends of the Faith. I know that not all noble lords consider themselves pious, though I am sure all are dutiful to the Gods. The Faith though cares for the poor, orphaned and sick across Arvum. We are in every parish. Every hold. Every village. And the rightful tithes are redistributed across the land as we pay to provide these services. It seems you would want your smiths chosen to provide for the Knights of Solace. You'd be wanting your horse breeders animals chosen to provide for competitions - I will admit myself that we have a great deal of pride in some of our finer stallions and warhorses that have come from the Valardin lands, and look forward to seeing the horses of Saik to consider some for purchase when we help out that Barony soon. It seems you would want to champion your hold and its goods to the Faith. You would want the help of the Faith to just provide that extra support of our troops to guard your people as you expand your land. You would want to get to know the Lodge of petrichor, learn their secrets of the land. At least to me. Is not prosperity one of the duties of the noble? To ensure at his passing his people are happier, healthier and better off than when his reign started? But. There are many routes to that. And I accept that it is a freedom to choose to decide indifference to the Faith, to view us as a simple support apparatus. It does not impact on any of the services we provide to your people, so I suppose in many ways if you wish for a life free of the Faith you can just ignore us as we toil around your lands to help others. The Templars will still defend you. The scholars will record. The lodge will help you plant your seed and tend your animals. The Solace will still patrol your roads. That's fine.

But what truly baffles me. What confuses me. What renders me mute in surprise? It is the fact that some noble lords seem to desire to be active enemies of the Faith, her clergy and the people. To oppose the good work of the Gods - to be obstinate. Of course, providing that opposition does not take tangible form, they may well be fine. But it seems like the work of a very disturbed mind to choose to hate the representatives of the Gods and to place oneself on that cliff edge.

Relationship Note on Talen

It's been a few years now, since I got my Barony from Talen. A lot of people have asked why, and the answer largely boils down to the Seawatch Wall. Nearly everyone fell, and I stood. Covered in gore, winning the fight, and eager to get to more. It's also true that I had cleared out Afflua of monsters before the Wall happened, but the was one of those moments where... at least, as far as I'm concerned, and likely as the world will be concerned, now that we're looking at the past, history will change.

At the Seawatch Wall, Talen and I stood fast. Our battered forced held as others ran. Velenosa gained, that day, a new hound. No, I don't consider that an insult. We stood together, against the waves and waves and waves of the enemy, and so slick with gore that we could barely hold our footing, a new House was founded.

So that's our story, Compact. That is the origin of the house of De Lire. We are the dog of the Velenosa. When you fuck up so bad that subtlety is no longer an option, that's when we're there.

Our sigil is the laughing dog's head. And our words, though not chosen by me, are entirely perfect.

We aren't laughing with you.

I had an amazing evening, a fascinating discussion about the nature and value of truth in the Salon became a night of further companionship and meeting new friends! Several! And running into old friends I haven't seen in ages and a recently arrived Crafter (I may have scared her with the open tab, but that's alright).

I'm a little tipsy dictating this, Scholar, do be sure you add the part about hard cider coming out my nose and how the bartender was dashing in his attempt to keep a keg from falling out of my nose (that is the description Alayne gave me). Alayne is the new Crafter I met; she is delightful.

Also Scholar, please write something about how Oliver is getting along with my friends far better than I could have hoped. But it could be a ploy to lure him away and-

Madness.

That is how they called it. 'Madwoman', they named me, but they speak from loose truths, and little knowledge. The kind of knowledge you'd find on the cheap, communal journals and books strewn out across the madly long libraries of Vellichor- it is a crime, it truly is; a crime to let these many peoples claim ownership and mastery over matters, journal them, and credit them as acknowledged; as experienced. The world wasn't meant to read the lived thoughts of every peasant that breaths and knows his letters just because. But enough of that- I am part of its system, how hypocritical of me.

As I quaffed all manner of haphazardly put together concoctions yesternight, merely to test the result of the many herbariums and oils available, they thought I searched for death- death, was it? The death of ignorance, perhaps. How else was I meant to know a drop of that red little plant and that other, dark, oily-goodness-dripping one would turn my tongue a vivid - shimmering - green color? Until I spat it - the green - all out, of course. Nevermind the aftermath of dizziness and brief, however rotund, bleeding from the nose, this yielded results.

Even if vague, unnecessary results that had no benefit to my health. But colors aren't read in words; colors are felt and appraised. Perhaps I ought to give more credit to Vellichor's scholars, I could've mostly read on those very plants on the library by my own volition, but truly? We'll see.

Dueling with bows can be interesting! It depends on how tricky you make the target to hit. A difficult target where even the most accomplished archer struggles and has to take multiple shots can be fun to watch, seeing those arrows sail so close yet miss their mark, wondering who will land the hit.

While I adore him to pieces as one of the newest members of the Iron Guard, I beg you, please do not give him anything sharp.

He lost to a sofa.

I fear he might do worse, and I speak with authority, as I often have troubles with sharp objects.

Dueling archers? That sounds like it is either A) really boring and equates to fancy target practice or B) like a really great way to lose an eye. I think I'll avoid any bow-toting champions.

A contest sounds fun, though! If it has especially fancy targets. Emphasis on especially!

I lost a bet to Lady Isabetta. We betted on who would win the last duel. I betted for Master Caspian and Countess Regina. She betted for Marquis Fairen and Sir Jeffeth.

If I won she had to go 24 hours being serious, calling everyone by their proper titles, being polite, not telling any jokes or playing any pranks.

If she won I had to wear a blue dress to party and tint my hair in blue to go with it.

She won and unfortunately at some party coming up, I will show up in blue.

He came into my shop a while ago with a plan to purchase diamondplate armor. We discussed how it is not technically out of anyone's reach if budgeted properly; one piece at a time over time. I made two -excellent- pieces for him that I am quite proud of. They are of his own design but the craftsmanship is where my expertise comes into play. Diamondplate is just so beautiful to work with.

It also looks quite fetching on him.
