Thank you all for the suggestions of hobbies. While some involve far too many animals and while the Legate of Concepts tends to object to any hobby that might end up with me 'accidentally' wounding someone, there were several possibilities worth considering.

Child,

As you grow up, you are going to hear a lot of things about love. There are different kinds of it, each with its own quirks and various ways it should be approached. Familial love, love for friends, love for your home, romantic love, love of self...and I may be missing some. There will be people who try to tell you which of these is the most important, without consensus. Ask ten different people, and you might well get ten different answers. So I am not going to try to push my own opinion of that on you here. There is something much more important about love that you should know, and it is one thing they all have in common. Love is difficult. It will hurt you sometimes, and I can assure you that pain is unlike any other. However, the other thing that I can tell you for certain is that it is worth the pain, the difficulty, the frustration. All of it.

Relationship Note on Monique

It is a testament to the exceptional Lady Monique that every time I hear about an upcoming book, it is completely snatched up from the Gilded Page. Truly, she runs an amazing bookstore that is surely the must-visit stop of near everyone in the city. It seems near impossible to purchase a book at times - I've half a mind to camp out before the establishment! Though I jest. Still, The Baron's Muse Part I sounds so intriguing! I am envious of all those people who managed to fetch themselves one copy.

People trying to "fix" the lowers by throwing money and / or soldiers down from the sovereign bridge has been an occasional political foray since time immemorial. Every time a member of the Peerage dies down there it starts being noised about, as though no murders happen anywhere else and as though none of the existing social institutions or any of the past political forays or charitably intended vanity projects ever happened.

For the people who live and work down there, it is worth an eyeroll or a thrown tomato and little else.

Crime happens everywhere, in every fealty, in the Compact and out of it. Murders happen. Titles don't make you immune.

The Iron Guard once again did a service in cleaning and tending to the statue of Mangata after some fools defaced it. You have to wonder at why people would act in such a way? Still. The guard were on the case quickly, and I have posted a reward to help, and some of my Templars as there is an altar there which should not receive similar attention. The posting however is because it is a religious matter and thus it is our duty, not theirs, to protect the altar and the statue. It is not because I doubt their abilities.

In the recent Assembly of Peers, offers were made to help the Iron Guard because of recent high profile deaths. I understand these desires. But I would ask people to consider these things carefully. For an army in the thousands, the addition of 50 or even 100 more guards per fealty is not a huge impact. And, I fear, I must point out that people die. Regularly. Constantly. Wagons coming to the city will bear the bodies of Knights of Solace who have died on the road defending their charges, of pilgrims where sadly they did not make the Waystation, of men and women in various reasons. It is not because the Knights of Solace lack number or skill, it is because threats will eventually make it through. Eventually, something which will only win 1 time in 1000 will manage it. You can of course make it harder and harder for the opposition to succeed, but you can also reduce their chances to test their luck. Ask Dame Thena suggests, the Lowers are a place only to be entered with reason if you do not belong.

Foolsbane is toxic bile. It makes your eyes cross whether you want them to or not, and the subsequent misbehavior of your body can all be blamed on what that shite does to it. Your toes curl, your hair straightens, one eye -has- to squint while the other bulges out obscenely, just to swallow it down.

I had three shots of the awfulness and didn't throw up once. The look of respect from this man didn't dull the agony of my insides then, or later, or the next morning, but I do have the admiration of at least three large Northern men.

Everyone should try it at least once. Unless you're with child, and then save it for after the baby is born. I'd hate to think what it would do to a growing bairn. Probably come out with a full set of teeth and an ingrained resentment towards its mother.

In regards to Oathlands beverage preferences: In the Greenwood we've always preferred whiskey. Maybe I shouldn't be airing that since it makes us seem like a bunch of lushes running around in the woods, but there it is.

Killian Ashford. Paladin of Ideals.

A lovely title, really, in a land full of remarkable titles. Knight of Butterflies, Voice of Grayson, Mother of Mercy. The Paladin of Ideals sings in a certain powerful way, doesn't it?

I wish dearly I knew him in life. I wish I had the opportunity to meet with him, invite him to speak his mind, and learn the nature of the man he was. Alas, he's gone too soon from us. I've collected a little of his story by hearsay and secondhand accounts, firsthand impressions, and the sort of receding flotsam and jetsam kicked up when a great act transpires. Here was a man that, by all accounts, held to a noble code of conduct. In the end, the cost for his service was great. The greatest, really, when you get right down to it. One's life sacrificed for others -- complete strangers, people he would have no reason to intervene for, other than by his own code of honor. It says much about him. The very barest sampling of who he was arises from that courageous act, and I'd be lying if I didn't say it moved me to think long and hard on a winter's day about the meaning of life, legacy, and service.

To think he liked crawling through ruins and exploring the world too. A loss in the worst of ways. Prince Ainsley aims to have him interred in the Grayson Hall for heroic, honourable folk and I find it's an intriguing cause. But the deeper I dig in, the more I realize the depth of the man for whom the honour is sought.

I wish I might have known him. Such people are rare in this world, incredibly so. With luck, I shall help to gather a tale that continues to the future, and inspires others.

Count Thesarin left me thinking again. It's a fascinating thing, how different people can be. We wear our outward masks to present to society and we keep our inner faces guarded, somewhat at least. Those who wear glass masks offer the truest sense of their inner selves, either through folly or bravery. It takes a certain confidence to show the world what and whom you are. Others can be utterly at odds, and those may be the more dangerous extreme.

Then I am reminded how fortunate Riven is for its leadership. Mia is a brilliant lantern burning steady and bright. Thesarin, ah, now there's someone of greater, deeper currents than meets the eye. I mean it in the very best senses. A man able to balance his talents in the field with convictions and restraint of leadership is a rare commodity. A plain-spoken, sensible manner atop that? Count it as one of the better rarities in the world, right up there with unicorns and honest politicians.

In ten words, he can school me on what it means to be a good leader, a potent diplomat, and a decent person. Better than decent. I'm underselling the quality that comes with acknowledging how much in the world relies on being clear-sighted and pragmatic, even when everything else is as wild as a party in full swing. He's someone I admire.

Just not falcon jousting. My childhood attempts to invent the hobby did not end happily.

"There once was a little boy who wanted to know everything. He was insatiably curious. From the moment he was born, he seemed to want to know every detail of the world around him..." I started to read to my little Caprice. "A Boy and His Spider: A Bedtime Story" was my favorite tale. I feel that my daughter also loves it. She laughed, giggled, I can swear she even snorted while chuckling. She really enjoyed the book. Or maybe she knew it's my favorite. So, she wanted to make me happy. I can see it in her eyes, I can see how clever she is. But also I see a lot of curiosity shimmering in her gaze. Maybe she just understood that the book was also about her...

Though, she fell asleep in the middle of the story. I will have to finish tomorrow.

By the Lord Commander's decree, all knights of the Hundred must have a hobby. Something that, although it has no connection to their work for the King, they do to clear the mind or for enjoyment.

I did not have a hobby previously. But I do now. I have some charcoals and some drawing paper, and Baroness Skye has taught me the basics of sketching and other techniques. And so I present below my first drawing.

It is relaxing.

(( The scene to the discerning viewer is the gardens of the Grotto. Sir Corban has opted to take in some of the flowers, yes, but it is not the focus. Instead, some vines in a corner that are twined around one another appear to have caught his eye. The drawing is done well enough, but amateurishly, with an undue focus on technical aspects rather than capturing the essence of the scene. ))
