Marquessa Samantha Deepwood

The world took everything from me and attempted to break me. But we are more than just the sum of our tragedies, or walking wounded that forever bear our scars. We must rebuild from the ashes of what we have lost and as nobles never abandon those who depend upon us.

Description: No one would mistake The Marquessa of Deepwood March as glamourous or entrancing, but there's something about the way the young woman moves, the way she speaks and smiles that makes her unforgettable. Her rich dark skin gives her a sense of being grounded, and her earnest grey eyes make her seem much older than she really is. Her smiles are rare, but pure and genuine when she offers them, kind to those less fortunate and polite to the others of court. Her voice carries a weight to it, smokey and beautiful, giving others pause, interested in what she has to say. Her confidence pervades her bearing, and she carries herself well, with only the slightest hint of a long forgotten nervousness.

Personality: Samantha wants nothing more than the world to be a better place. In her mind, the only way to do that, is to look to those below, and strengthen the foundation of the realm, rather than hope the fortune of the nobility trickles down. Her compassion for the lower classes sometimes makes her inordinately frustrated with the fripperies of court, and she sometimes feels the strain of politicking keenly. She understands the court politics, a quick study, and knows there are good people amongst the peerage, so she hopes with every ounce of her being, that she can get those good people to help make the changes she sees. She's a gentle soul with a spirit of steel, rarely backing down in the assembly, and fencing with words with the best of them. She is a truly good person, even if idealistic.

Background: Despite her youth, Marquessa Samantha Deepwood's moving speeches before the Assembly of Peers has some nobles referring to her as 'the conscience of the Peers'. This is faint praise, as she stands nearly alone as one of the few nobles whose oratory consistently has focused on the plight of those beneath the nobility, but her unique background allows many of the more indifferent nobility to forgive her stranger notions on matters such as social justice for commoners. A uniquely tragic background, in fact, and the rest of the peerage is likely to give her some understanding because of it.

When she was but a child, House Tyde rose up in bloody rebellion against House Thrax in the far east and threw the Mourning Isles into civil war. King Alaric III grew alarmed that the bloodshed could spread, and wished to bring the unruly vassals to heel and settle the conflict, gathering his banners to argue from a position of strength. House Deepwood, as vassals of House Bisland and thus to House Grayson, answered the call along with the rest of Grayson's servants, but the elderly Marquis Deepwood sent his sons and most of his forces while staying home with just a token honor guard and family to watch the Deepwood lands. Unfortunately, the Gray Forest Reapers heard of the sudden vulnerability of the marquis' lands. The powerful Abandoned clan struck while the family was nearly defenseless, slaughtered the handful of defenders and commoners at the estate, and took the very young child Samantha Deepwood hostage for ransom. Samantha's family did not survive, and while Duke Gabriel Bisland led a rescue and put the majority of the Gray Forest Reapers to the sword that shattered their power for a generation, the badly traumatized child was left to be raised by tutors and regents as the future Marquessa of Deepwood March. Now the young woman has grown into adulthood and is a full Peer of the Realm, but she has never forgotten the deaths of all she knew when she was a child. She feels a bone deep obligation to do right by the dead and build a better realm for tomorrow.

  • Name Summary
Caspian I am always a fan of a woman with a flare for the dramatic. If she finds me a woman to fight another man for, I will gladly do it as long as it's on a roof top!
Cristoph I had the pleasure of meeting Marquessa Samantha at a dinner with her husband Rymarr and Countess Nicia. She's a completely lovely woman and I'm glad to see that Rymarr has found a place to be happy, finally. Even if he's still rather stoic at times. It was a wonderful evening and I look forward to meeting with them again.
Duarte Sharp as a tack but humble. I shall seek her out for support of good works --- whenever Pravus decides to partake in some.
Echo I met Samantha in the training center, and though it's likely a place she wouldn't frequent, I was able to sit down and chat with her. There was a bit of drama and though the theatrics were more or less a mixture of enjoyable and horrible, she kept her composure and since then I've been invited to enjoy some company at her manor. She's all around incredibly pleasant and warm company.
Ferrando The Marquessa is of course very gracious and said she enjoyed my sparring in the training center when we first met, which I of course appreciate very much. She also now and then makes an effort to ensure that I'm well-fed with proper Deepwood pies and pastries, which I appreciate even more.
Kaldur Gracious in accommodating a growing Seliki presence at Deepwood Manor.
Kenna What a wonderful gathering! She is the absolute soul of a hostess. I believe I need to come spend more time here and get better acquainted with everyone.
Malesh A fellow Vassal to Bisland. Suggested we work closer together and you know, she's right. We should.
Margerie The Marquessa seems to have a very encouraging nature, cheering everyone on. It is a pleasant thing to see!
Petal I heard about all the good word she has done for the Abandoned like us. She is wearing my dress too and looks lovely in it. She also noticed me and Tallius and well really saw us at the party. Not everyone does. Hopefully I can get to know her better later.
Quenia I've had the opportunity to dine with Marquessa Samantha several times now. She's a fine conversationalist and bargains well.
Saedrus I have met the Marquessa briefly multiple times, witnessed her public presence more times than I can remember -- even attended her wedding. As disciples of Skald though, I think we will have more time to get to know one another. What I do know and what shines so brightly of her character is her compassion, generosity and the strength of her convictions the likes of which I have yet to see matched by another. She is a most impressive woman.
Samael My beloved neice. She's very compassionate and strong, two things I admire most about her. I am happy to know her.
Sparte Very nice. Shame her house is lost in the woods. Well, previously lost.
Sunniva The Deepwood Marquessa is a prudent woman but with a giving heart. The position she holds is one that deserves respect. I enjoyed our conversation together and it is good to know that when I do have ideas that I have someone dependable and thoughtful to help me refine them with.
Tallius It's nice to put a face to the name, she seems much as I had expected considering her reputation for kindness and generosity.
Thesarin Liege-lady to my own House. I swore her my service, and I gave her my respect. Not as warrior; her work is harder, and worthier, and better than that.
